    Ringo has never proclaimed himself to be the best drummer ever, which is why it baffles me that some people are so hell-bent on tearing him down. There are a lot of great songwriters and musicians who aren't technically skilled virtuosos. Ringo was part of a band that wrote some of the GREATEST SONGS EVER. There are some people who will be better at playing their instruments than the Beatles ever were, but they'll never make music the way the Beatles were able to!

      Those people don't know how music works. They typically name that Rush guy as the greatest drummer, and like, yeah okay he can bang out on 500 individual drums in a very weird technical way, but it doesn't SOUND good, or rhythmical. Ringo always sounded good, and he was always functional.

      the best drummer ive ever recorded was a schizophrenic man who the band had to pick up from behind a dumpster whenever they wanted to record. he refused all help people offered to him, and he was extremely difficult to work with. idk if hes even alive anymore, i havent seen him in years
      no successful band would get anywhere with him as their drummer. sometimes you just need someone who will show up on time, play what theyre told to and not muck up the song writing process and rack up your studio time
      ringo is a mediocre drummer but when youve got george harrison, john lennon and paul mccartney in a band, youre gonna need at least one of the group to be a normal person lol. and that was ringo

      I know this is an old video, but I wanted to point out when Pete Best left as the drummer for The Beatles, the band asked for Ringo by name. The Beatles did so many takes of their songs in studio they could always rely on Ringo to have the exact beats per minute the first take and the 50th take, at any point in the song. There are some isolated drum track with Paul's bass which points out exactly how good both of them were, as drums and bass sometimes get buried in the mix, but also the Paul was really Ringo's bass player, not the other way around.

  • @Bourbosaurus
    @Bourbosaurus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +116

    People don’t realise one of Ringo’s strengths is that if you isolate just the drum track on any Beatle’s song you can still tell exactly what song it is.

    I am just so sick of hearing haters saying "Oooh, he's not the best drummer in the Beatles, John Lennon said so!"
    That quote is just utter shit. If he was so bad, why did they hang onto him for 8 years? Why did John and George have him play on many of their early albums? Answer me that!
    To me, Ringo was massively underrated. He may not be as virtuous as John Bonham or Neil Peart or whatever, but he is still massively important to rock and roll music. He's definitely my favorite drummer out there. Simple, yet very efficient. I think that's a good way to describe him.

    • @scottmurphy5676
      @scottmurphy5676 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Astrosquall The Beatles inspired other generations? Thank you Captain Obvious. I was alive then have been a Beatles fan for 50 years. I know quite a bit more about the you probably every will, party because I lived it. My rirst record ever was the "Meet the Beatles" and I went through 2 of them because I wore them completely out. And Ringo was always the jokester. Their onstage personas, with the exception of George, were not a good indicator of their private personas. George, who was always my favorite, followed closely by Ringo, was by far the most introspective and quiet. John was also fairly reserved but gave Brian Epstein fits having to clean up after his often very controversial statements. Paul was more extroverted the John, but Ringo, who was the oldest, was always the most extroverted. Most drummers, myself included, tend to be the most extroverted of the bunch. I think the instrument appeals more to extroverted people, and for most of us, who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, it also means you usually don't have to sing.

    His explanation for his unique style is why during the 60s, none of us playing drums could get his fills down...and we were so frustrated because we couldn't figure out why. It wasn't until we discovered that Ringo is left handed that we began to get a clue.

    • @ahcapella
      @ahcapella 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yep. If I had known this when I was a teenager-and always striving to mimic Ringo’s “funny little fills,” which never sounded quite right when *I* did them-I would have arranged my drum kit “mirror-imaged” (left-handed), OR at least forced myself to always lead off with my left hand when doing fills.

    • @CrowClouds
      @CrowClouds 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @annakimborahpa
      @annakimborahpa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@CrowClouds Ringo beat time leading with his right hand, but made his drum fills leading with his left hand. Although he was born left handed, he had been forced by his grandmother to write with his right hand. This conformity to majority right-handedness from his youth translated into keeping the traditional drum kit set up which was designed for right handed players. In effect, Ringo overcame being left-handed in a right-handed world and this produced his uniquely distinct style of drumming that can be described as unpredictable and exciting. No other drummer had to face the dilemma Ringo did and that is why he speaks in emotional terms in describing how he played in The Beatles. In effect, his playing was an expression of his own personal struggle.

    i think what a lot of people who are commenting don't realize is that in the time that ringo started playing drummers really didn't have any say in anything musical what so ever. hell the other musicians rarely had any say over it either. ringo was one of the first to come in as an equal and respected part of the band (specifically in rock and roll). if you don't understand that you probably don't have any historical context or background at all.
    think of it this way, how many other bands back then even let their drummer come close to a mic? very few come to mind

    • @johnmcdonald157
      @johnmcdonald157 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can tell from first hand experience that a drummer has EVERYTHING to say about how the music is played from start to finish. I taught this lesson many times to arrogant guitarists who would say "You're just a drummer, be quiet''. They would say this because I would politely try and get them to listen as I tried to set the proper tempo to whatever song we were about to do. And I'd say to myself ''Ok, asshole, prepare to be schooled''. And after a few bars or two I'd start screwing up the tempo and pretty soon the music started sounding like crap and things would come to a halt and then I'd say, "Now, do you want to try it my way''? Timing is everything. In music, acting, dancing, art, life, in everything. never piss off a drummer.

    • @JonGrandeMedia
      @JonGrandeMedia 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      john mcdonald didn't mean it as offensive to drummers. i'm a musician also and finding the right drummer is the hardest part and the most important part of forming a good band.
      all i'm saying is that historically drummers were not seen as part of the main attraction.
      we now live in a different age though where they are seen as an essential part and part of that is thanks to guys like ringo, keith moon, john bonham, neil peart, etc. who you are pretty much unable to ignore.

      That's not the reason that people criticize him for.
      Is like talking apples and oranges.
      I like Ringo for his musical ideas more than anything else because that's what's there to like. Every time I see a criticism of Ringo that part is left out because the critics are looking at EVERYTHING else except that. Which is just circumstantial.
      People don't like that he's a minimalist and always find ways to criticize him because he plays out of the ordinary.
      I believe that precisely because he was a minimalist Pete Best got kicked out and he came him. That and his ability to get along with everyone and serve THEIR songs.
      That's all they wanted. They didn't want Buddy Rich they wanted a guy to fit their band and serve their music and it worked out.
      Other Beatles mentioned that Ringo rarely made any mistakes if ever. In part that's probably because he was a minimalist.
      All in all, in order to like Ringo I think you have to like The Beatles first.

    I drum naturally in the same way, left handed and right footed, because I set my first kit up 'incorrectly'. If you want to create your own sound, be yourself, don't be taught how to do everything. Music is great for that, cause there's no wrong way to do it! Self teaching is the best way to experience music and I believe gives naturally strong musicianship.

    Is Ringo the greatest drummer ever? No but at one point he was probably the greatest drummer in rock (pre-Keith Moon). Listen to him on early Beatle songs from 63 & 64. He kicked the band in the ass, his tempo was rock solid, & his fills were amazingly inventive. He was arguably the most accomplished musician in the band at the time (along with George). And even after (66 to 69) he has a style & a sound that is still emulated to this day.

      ***** YOU'RE the one who needs to do some research. Ringo is the drummer on 95% of all Beatle songs. The exception being LOVE ME DO which had Alan White on one take & Ringo on another take. And that was only because George Martin had not heard Ringo play so he hired a studio drummer. But once he heard Ringo and knew he could play, then they never used another drummer outside the band again.
      The only other person besides Ringo who played drums for them was Paul McCartney. He played drums on a handful of songs on The White Album (when Ringo quit for a short time) and on Ballad of John & Yoko.

    Ringo kept Rhythm with one hand while he did all of his fills with the other hand. This style is particularly evident during “A day in the life”. Yeah, the fills were not overly complicated, but the way he did this would be difficult for most drummers to even understand let alone play. It’s almost analogous to a Guitar player playing the rhythm and lead at the same time.
    People rave about the Guitar playing abilities of the Joe Satriani’s of the world, but to me that Guitar style is simply a sterile sound without any substance. Ringo’s idiosyncratic drumming was a function of impulsive interpretation. He didn’t practice the “soul” out of their music by becoming an automated technician, he put soul into their music by developing a singularly unique style that assimilated with their music perfectly. And therein lays the definition of a great drummer!

      Another example of how something "simple" is easy to play incorrectly, but getting it right is another matter. When Ringo dies, Ringo drums die with him, because nobody else (his son Zak, an awesome drummer in his own right, among them) really knows how it happens. You can get into the technique but getting into the mind is another matter.

      I agree JustMegawatt. Ringo is a very underrated drummer and hasn't been given the credit he deserves for his influence in rock and roll.

    Even if it is true or not the statement does have some merit. From the top of my head I know Paul McCartney played drums on songs such as 'Back in the USSR', 'Dear Prudence' and 'The Ballad of John & Yoko'. However it was nothing like Ringo could do. His drumming on 'Rain' and 'She Said She Said' is truly brilliant.....and extremely hard to do as well.

    I don't know much about the Beatles - hadn't even seen a video of them until just a minute ago - even though I'm 18 and I've heard about them time after time, of course. I'm just stunned that this man is 74. He look like he's in his fifties (at _most_) and he doesn't sound or act like a man in his mid seventies. It's incredible. I hope I manage to age as gracefully as he has.

    To me, Ringo is probably one of the greatest, yet under-rated drummers of all time. Ringo is also just such a great, giving human being. His unique style, and he is just the pinnacle professional musician.
    Many could only hope to be as great as Ringo.

    This is one of the reasons why Ringo is still so famous: because people can't stop debating whether or not he is considered a good drummer, a great drummer, or a not-so-great drummer! XD

    Sure, there are other better drummers, but this is Ringo Starr. Like it or not, he's one of the reasons why the Beatles became the all-time most popular, most successful band in the world. No one can take that away from him.

    Rain and Tomorrow never knows are my top 2 Beatles songs and I realize it now days after seeing the Get Back documentary and make study on them the last 2 months ,because of him. Ringo is the best ,the most humble talented authentic personality in the band. He was the soul of Beatles emotionally and technically . Ringo proves that some aged others matured ,Love you Ringo kisses from Athens ,Greece for me it’s the most handsome of all. He smiles and the world be a better one .I am almost 48 listened and love music so much through all those years but I never had any Beatles experience till now. My father once told me before he dies that the Beatles were his favorite band in the world ,now I now why! ♥️
