Saw Ringo and the All Starrs play at Providence RI, this fall... his age 82... for the final song, With A Little Help From My Friends, after a long show, Ringo, singing up in front with a microphone, actually did JUMPING JACKS during the coda, while the audience was screaming our heads off!!! I had EVERY Beatles album by the time I was 6. I was 8 when John Lennon died. I cried so much I had to leave school. BUT, nobody pointed my life more than Ringo. I knew every song by age 10 by heart. I forced my parents to buy my 1st drumset by age 12. By age 12.5 I was playing Beatles songs for teenage dances. I am 50 now, and still play at least 5 Beatles songs a day on drums at full volume. It is such tasteful playing that I cant imagine paying for therapy. I find Ringo's playing to be like the soundtrack to a spy movie. Efficient. Deadly. Perfectly adapted to the situation. Egoless playing creates pure emotive music. Timeless.

I never paid close attention to Ringo's drumming until I started hearing drummers say he was one of the greats. I was always listening to John, Paul, and George and suspected that another drummer would have been as good. But when I started paying attention to Ringo's drum work, I realized that it was one of the things I always loved about the Beatles' music. I just didn't notice how I felt about it, because I was so busy loving the rest of the music. Truth be told, I'm barely aware of Paul's bass playing. My ears did not pick it out from the musical melange, though I've heard people say he wrote some brilliant bass lines, which I can easily believe. I was almost always most focused on the vocals and the often uniquely beautiful and strange harmonies. In my memory of it from decades ago, I had come to think of She Loves You as a rather simple song, perhaps not among their best, but recently, going back to listen to it, I remembered how great that song was, how it had the most gorgeous, golden, strange, magical harmonies. Pure magic. Super pleasure. Nothing to equal it, except in other works by the Beatles.

I saw the Beatles at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1965. I couldn't afford the $5.50 ticket in 1964 but went to Toronto and stood outside MLG so I could breathe the same air. Ringo was always my favourite.
I saw him with his All Star band a few years ago. I am impressed with his talent and energy to this day. I attended the Beatles Convention in Liverpool a few years back. At the first venue the audience was asked who had seen them in person. I was one of less than a half dozen people in the crowd who had. I spoke with a man my age at the Cavern and he said we are a small club. I cherish those boys and the music and the phenomena of Beatlemania. Thank you, Ringo. Love and Peace. Carolyn

Chad smith, Sheila E, and Ringo himself explained his approach to drum fills best, by explaining that he always leads with the left hand. Doing this can easily lead to both arms in each other’s way. So, rather than spend time trying to change this
He seemingly just relaxed and let the fills happen unforced. This gave him a lot of space between the notes to be creative with the drum fills and make them musical.
Happy giving of thanks day’s eve.

I was struck by how often I thought "wow, that's a great beat, or that's a really nice drum fill." Before that I had never given Ringo much credit. He was the buffoon, the joker, the comic relief. But he was actually a really great drummer, and a massive part of the Beatles' success. One obvious example is "Come Together." Ringo is the core of that song. WIthout his drumming there's no song.

Todd Sucherman nailed it with his description of Ringo's drumming. I was "there" when The Beatles exploded (and believe me, they exPLODed) onto the rock music scene) and like millions of other amateurs, I was hooked, eventually immersing myself in learning to play guitar, eventually playing in groups, writing, recording, etc. Over time I came to understand the importance of playing what a song CALLED for, not what I just "felt" like playing...in a way writing my own "song" as part of the whole song which can help make or break it. THAT is what Ringo (and the other Beatles) were brilliant at, individually and collectively. They just had the perfect "chemistry" as a group.
Listen to Ringo's playing on "Rain", The Sgt Pepper album, etc. He used different sounds, different attacks, accents, etc. Absolutely cutting edge, especially 60 years ago!

Yes, yes and yes. If I'm having trouble coming up with something that sounds appropriate for whatever song in question, I like to revert to the "What Would Ringo Do" method.

I've been playing since 1967...he's my favorite...always will be! He has great time...he really swings...he plays what's needed! The Beatles were always about the "song"...not a boring 10 min guitar or drum solo! They all contributed their immense talents to the band. Watch The Beatles play Little Richards "Long Tall Sally" on You Tube from their first concert in the US in Washington D.C. on Feb.11, 1964. He drives the band! Listen to The Beatles play "Ooh My Soul" from the BBC in 1963. Ringo's drumming is frantic and fantastic!!! He was/is the most influential rock'n'roll drummer of all time!!!

Todd Sucherman nailed it!! Never a better description of Ringo's quality and what music is. Because Ringo (as his other 3 mates) were musicians first!! That means to be "a slave" of each song in terms to build what the song must be. And not a show of each instrumentist of the band to demonstrate as an athlete his velocity records.

I was 11 when Love me do came out . My parents were jazz and classical fans , I loved Take 5 and the Joe Morello solo , my older brother had Shadows records , I loved them too , but when I saw A Hard Day's Night at 13 , girls were screaming in the theatre . The scene on the train when they are playing ' I should have known better , the feel is just monster and so infectious , my right foot was banging away on the floor and my left hand slapping the armrest ... I just wanted to be sitting behind a black oyster pearl Ludwig drum kit laying down that big beat ... which I ended up doing for the next 50 odd years . I have a couple of mid 60S white marine pearl Ludwig Super Classic kits these days ( plus 60s vintage oddities ) these day ... they got regular use until lockdown , although things are slowly sneaking back ... Hooray for Ringo and playing in service of the song .

I also met him personally. I worked for an ophthalmologist in the optical part of the practice & he gets his eyes examined & buys some frames, too. Very normal & charming!
I live in Los Angeles now. And so does he.

Chosen and musically humble. All three original Beatles wanted and chose Ringo. Enough. That meant he was a permanent and metronomically perfect servant to what each song required, never trying to find the limelight. There is greatness just in that. It’s like having a band member who has the mentality of a session musician. Brilliant.

I can remember being in a diner (of sorts) out in Texas, I think, at about 5 years old. It was around the time The Beatles really broke in the US. They had those tabletop jukeboxes at every booth and my brother or sister played She Loves you, Yeah, yeah, yeah, and my parents hated it. I did not. And I've played drums and percussion ever since.
