      Wouldn't matter if the plates are magnetic or not. You just need to attach or glue some thin sheet metal to the back of the plate and the magnets can grab onto that.

  • @sniperlif3

    Why not drill holes? You bumper is pretty trashed, and looks very cheap and/or not fully installed.
    Or why not just make a mount with 2 pieces of metal in a Z-like shape that come from somewhere other than the bumper and just attach the license to that, then remove later if you really care. You will always have it, and its easy to install.

  • @briansmobile1

    • @Dont-come-at-me-24
      @Dont-come-at-me-24 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      So rather then making too tiny holes to fix a plate correctly ,you go to the extra effort to make it seem like it's fixed correctly? That's just retarded, a no plate fee seems to be anywhere from $25-200 so you would pay that multiple times rather then fixing it properly?
      You could just remove it when the car is used on track and put it back on when it driven in the road.

  • @jimevans1809

    A few things could make this work better. Wipe down all surfaces with alcohol. The tape will stick way better. Curve the plate a little so it matches the bumper. It will allow the tape more surface area to stick to. Sit it up a little higher, to allow more support from the bumper.
    Seriously, you could permanently mount a plate this way. You just need a little prep and no hassles or holes.

    • @rich925cal1

      That's exactly what I did years ago on a MR2 I used to own. I had a Bomex front bumper fitted and painted with a red/orange/gold flip paint - no way I was going to drill holes in the front or use tape which could potentially peel paint off! I made 2 'L' shaped brackets, mounted them on the number plate (I'm British, so License Plate for you cousins across the pond) and bolted them to captive nuts under the bumper. No holes visible unless you laid on the floor and looked up into the air duct to the radiator. 'Wing head' bolts fixed the brackets in place so I could remove the brackets and plate from the car in less than a minute when going to shows and photoshoots.

  • @devilskullBEL
    @devilskullBEL 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    What a horrible fix xD
    Dude, you get all smart and fancy about pretty anything car related and then come up with that?
    Attach some strong magnets to the back of your bumper and get another set to screw to the back of your plate.
    We are obliged to have a plate on the front at all time and fix it like that.
    You can cover the magnets on your plate with something soft to protect your paint.
    Just make sure the magnets are strong enough and you can go on the motorway and everything.

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just needs to be temporary so I can have my ticket written off and then the plate is taken off again. I'm not running a front plate on my car period lol.

    • @devilskullBEL
      @devilskullBEL 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You wouldn't last a day without being pulled over here. (All hail Europe... )
      See it as a fix for the next time you have a ticket but already have a painted bumper. (strong tape like that can pull paint off)
      How much do you have to pay? Can't be much if you aren't fussy about paying it?

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      devilskullBEL So far I've driven over 500 miles over the course of 4 track days in addition to about 12 other times of driving the car on the street and all without the front plate and with a car so loud that it requires ear plugs just to drive normally without hurting your ears lol.
      Lot's of people don't have a front plate in California. It's not something you really get pulled over for unless they really want to pull you over.
      It's a $25 fee and a 30 second inspection from an officer to see that the plate is there and then you're done.

    • @devilskullBEL
      @devilskullBEL 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh... I see why you can't be bothered about it now :p
      Would putting it behind the windscreen help?

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      devilskullBEL Yep haha now you understand :P
      And nope, plates have to be at the furthest points of the vehicle. So the front and rear bumpers. And I honestly feel like having your plate behind the windshield just makes it more obvious that your plate isn't where it's supposed to be haha. So I'd much rather run without any front plate all together.

    That's one thing I like about my old classic car. The side exhaust isn't legal, but I tell them it's factory. When it comes to the front plate "Sorry officer, it there's no mounting bracket. The other cars have them because it's an aftermarket thing. I don't wanna modify my car."
    "Your car is already modified, sir."
    "Yeah, but I haven't drilled any new holes in it anywhere. Only the paint and wheels are custom."
    Most cops are younger than I am and not into the oldies so they don't know much more than "We can't legally make him modify a classic car." or some such. My car is so not-legal it's crazy. But then I am told by cops who know (customers) that there are laws on the books that break down to "ANY modification to a car, including an aftermarket oil filter or headlight" makes the car unroadworthy. Frankly I think it's bullshit, so I don't look into it.

    There has to be some metal on your bumper to get it to stay on (Duh!)

    With no knowledge on what you do/want with your car, I have a suggestion (Ignore me if you like): Use painters tape before you drill to prevent the bit from ruining the paint job. Also, some aluminium rivets with threads are available to give you a proper threaded mounting hole.
    If you still don't want to keep the plate on just put the screws back in to cover the holes. Screws can be painted to match almost any finish.
    Good luck.

      For some people it takes away the look of a car and drilling holes into an expensive car isn't something we like to do. I don't want to drill holes into my Mustang GT and I'm glad I live in a state were front plates aren't a thing. Granted their are many alternative ways to avoid drilling into the bumper such as license plate brackets that drill beneath your car and you can easily remove the plate bracket anytime you want and place it back.

      Ethan , CRizzy_S550 .... its called buying a car that is actually 'legal' in your state. Sadly people travel cross country when they move, and thus their cars follow. Then they sell the car, and the poor soul who buys it now has a non-compliant car... If the state requires a front plate, then the dealerships have to sell (new) cars that are compliant. Having an aftermarket bumper doesn't negate that, nor does the logic of "its too pretty to drill holes into!"... Law is the law, you follow it or get a ticket.
      Sure it sucks, but oh flipping well people. Put a plate on there one way or another. How its mounted doesn't matter so long as it fits the requirements.
      I live in Ohio, and here its required to have a front plate. BUT!!! If the car does not have factory mounting holes, you are not obligated to 'install' a plate.

    dude seriously, get a neodymium magnet. you can find them rated to 100lbs force @ like $50. just get a coated one so it doesn't rust, glue or tape it inside the bumper, flush with the surface, and you can pop that plate on with the little bolt ends attached. the closer the magnet to the plate, the better the pull.

    I, truly, don't understand. It's a temporary ticket pass. Why would you, knowing your state requires a front license plate, continue to drive without it. Every time you're issued a ticket, even a "fix-it" ticket. The next time you're pulled over, you could face a bigger fine. Not to mention they could impound your vehicle for not following posted laws.
    But that's just me. I get that some people pay a lot for their paint jobs. Ignoring known laws isn't the way to go

    • @MrBilld75
      @MrBilld75 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. I agree 100% and I noticed that too and laughed. In fact, rubbing it with your hand is the worst thing you can do. It can make things not adhere properly, due to skin oils transferring to the object. Sticky things don't like to stick to oily things (like paint for example, which actually gets repelled by oils). Lol. I don't care how good the adhesive etc. is, no adhesive likes oils. That's why people prep surfaces with grime and oil stripping agents, like Acetone, Alcohol or even brake clean etc. To get rid of oils, grime, dirt and make a good, clean, strong bond with no cleaner residue left behind.

    Drill holes inside the vent instead, like from the "underside" so you can't see them and make a bracket from some scrap metal. Straight out and then a 90. Bolt the plate to the bracket and then have rubber washers between the bracket and the car to not scratch paint. Fix it to the bumper with bolts from the underside and wingnuts inside the bumper to make it easily removable and if they bend down and look how its fixed they don't see the wingnuts.

    Pu the bolt in, hold it with regular tape then put a magnet on to the back. Boom, take in on then off. Plastic bumpers will need a magnet behind it so you can hold it. For a better hold on the screws you can weld it from the back. Then you can take it back off really quick.
