Back in college I attended the senior thesis of a class mate in the DnD club who talked about the relationship between Roleplaying and Mental Health. And he talked about something called an alibi which is the barrier between the character you play and who you really are. Characters with a weak alibi are characters where the personality of the player bleeds into the character they play; which can be good but also can be bad because as a person bleeds into their character the character bleeds back into them. And those characteristics you pretended to have just become part of who you are. Which can be great for confidence building and the like but can also cause problems. Put another way if you pretend to be an asshole long enough you’ll eventually wake up and realize you’re not pretending anymore you just are an asshole.
Conversely, if you use your game character to explore ideas about your own identity that you're heavily invested in, it may not end well. 'You didn't let me come back from Ohp because you're ______ .' (←a holder of a particular form of prejudice) No way back. Nobody wins.
I used to share some (emphasis on some) similar beliefs as The Amazing Atheist. I felt burnt from growing up in a small town with a lot of religious folks who used it as an excuse to bully others. Then, as I grew older, I came to understand that it wasn't religion or religious people as a whole who were the problem. It was the people who didn't actually live up to the principles of those religions, but rather mistreated others for not sharing their beliefs... much like The Amazing Atheist.

The Amazing Atheist is an evergreen tale of why "being on the right side of history" and "believing in science" doesn't make you a good or intelligent person.
@@hannoverfiste4126 It's not actually, the "right side of history" mentality is just an extreme form of appealing to conformity or collective thinking. You can absolutely have religious beliefs and not be confined to this narrative. Unfortunately, even mediums defined by skepticism and empirical evidence like science are still just as vulnerable as any other simply because human nature is interchangeable.
tj in 2013: im not a feminist because most feminists only focus on womens issues tj in 2023: im not a feminist because gender just doesnt exist! (yep... this is unironically what he believes now)
This is very easy to explain. TJ was always a grifter. Being a fedora-tipping faux libertarian was popular on the web in the lste 2000s/early 2010s. Now sob stories and gender identity plays a bigger role, so he's shifted to that.
My name is the Amazing Atheist, I don't believe in it, so you don't have to. Tonight we're going to talk about the great Iron Liz and how he worships me, the Lightbringer!
TJ is the progenitor of modern internet politics in so many ways; but what sticks out to me the most is how empty he feels as a person. Like he lives to anger, mooch off of, and distress others. If nobody else is his enemy, TJ is his own enemy. It’s this cannibalistic ethos that I think defines the later skeptic/breadtube scene the most.
Finally someone said it. I mean, when it comes down to it, beliefs aside, they can't even function as human beings. Being contrarian, living off of strife, without ambition, heart, or passion. Such a self destructive life style and they need to see other people. Get off the high iq bus and just shoot-the-shit, talk down to earth, laugh, bond, then grow socially aware. Regardless of gods, we have eachother, we have a natural need and instinct to talk to human beings. I'm not the coolest head on youtube, but the internet really corrodes social ability.

As it turns out, deconstructing a religion's role in a society and replacing it with nothing leaves a vacuum for something else. Considering atheism is nothing more than the lack of belief, Islam took Christianity's place within contemporary English society, at least to some extent.
You attribute an unconscious value judgement within your statement, showing that you assume Atheism and Islam are somehow 'lesser' than Christianity. Firstly, there are a *lot* of different types of Christianity in the UK, and the people were a lot dumber (and internally violent) back when these religions were more prevalent and/or ubiquitous. Secondly, per capita Atheism is growing more than 20 times faster than Islam is in the UK, so to suggest Islam is acting as a replacement of sorts for Christianity is misleading - Atheism is not a vacuum, it is the presence of an opposing belief system, most often based on observable facts instead of faith and hope. Thirdly, Atheism is growing much faster in Scotland, and that is timing in exactly with a growing gap in education standards (in Scotland's favor), not to mention Scotland's much more liberal and progressive political and social culture when compared to the other component nations in the UK. That's all!
@@rawfreddy if you say so. To be fair, I never said Christianity is "superior", all I argued is that the religion has played a central role in the history of England. And now that it's largely been pushed out of the center of English culture, there's no religion to take its place. Atheism is not a religion, or at least that's what atheist I've ever met has vehemently insisted. So given Islam's steady growth, it makes sense why someone like Dawkins is uncertain about contemporary English culture in that regard. As far as the rest of your comment, when atheists build timeless cathedrals, write enduring hymns, and inspire cultural legends like St George and the dragon, I think what your arguing will hold up better. But until then, what you're saying doesn't convince me.
tons of people do seem to emulate him. In the 2000s your average internet atheist was a pretty normal person, they just didnt have any religious beliefs, but in the 2010s and 2020s they became extremely angry, bitter, and hate filled on average, not to mention increasingly narcissistic/full of themselves. Half of reddit act like they could be his acolytes.
@@arthas640what I always find so funny about Reddit atheists, is that they always without fail target Christianity and yet so rarely do they joke or even criticize other non western religions. Just a fun little observation I noticed.
@@leviticusprime4904 That's a weird habit of many people who pretend to be progressives like a lot of reddit atheists. Racism is bad, but not if it's aimed at white people. Islamophobia is usually bad (only bad if it sounds like something a conservative Islamophobic would say), but Christophobia is fine. They wont even dream of targeting many non-Abrahamic religions though like you said. I think the truth with a lot of those kinds of people is that they're aware that what they often say is hate speech, racist, etc. but they also hate the ring wing and conservatives, so they're afraid of sounding like them so they publicly restrict their hate speech to certain groups that the right wing dont rant about. The funniest part for me is when those Reddit atheists talk about Jews. They're often pretty devout antisemites but dont want to sound like nazis so they post images that are only tangentially associated with nazism like the wolfangel or Germanic pagan symbols. They wont say they hate Jews, instead aiming their hate at the non-Arab parts of Israel (read: Jews). They wont say they want to destroy Israel like the neo-nazis do, they just say that they want the west to cut support of Israel, cut ties with Israel, and leave the region; that's a pretty roundabout way of saying they want to see Israel and the Jews die en masse because they know that without western support the Arabs will tear Israel apart. They know that many Arabs still want to return Israel to a Muslim rules state with their rhetoric of "from the river to the sea" and say they want to "drive the Jews into the sea". They also tend to offer support for groups and parties that even have "antisemitism" as a key part of their party platform like Hamas and Hezbollah. They're often not too different from the right wing extremists and racists they claim to hate, they're just embarrassed about it.
You're probably making a joke but some might take you seriously. Rick and Morty was based on Justin's shorts where he spoofed Back to The Future. Rick is literally based on Doc Brown.

One of the things about fanfiction "reviews" is you should have at least a cursory knowledge of the fandom the fiction is based on (or multiple, in the case of a crossover like Pokemon and Sonic the Hedgehog). She was also extremely ignorant of the medium of comics, to the point she spent about half the review shouting at Chris-Chan for basically the one thing his comic did _right_ - all caps text is normal and preferable for comics.
This video makes me nostalgic for that period of the internet. I'd watch TJ, Spricket24, & the Annoying Orange for laughs.

Funny how Dawkins now misses the times when England had a Christian identity
As it turns out, deconstructing a religion's role in a society and replacing it with nothing leaves a vacuum for something else. Considering atheism is nothing more than the lack of belief, Islam took Christianity's place within contemporary English society, at least to some extent.
@@joshua_wherley 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 What a cope take!
@@rawfreddy how so?
I think TJ is largely responsible for the concept of the Reddit Atheist.
tons of people do seem to emulate him.
And discord and Reddit mods who all happen to be atheists
@@arthas640what I always find so funny about Reddit atheists, is that they always without fail target Christianity and yet so rarely do they joke or even criticize other non western religions. Just a fun little observation I noticed.
Personally I blame Bill Maher for the "atheist persona". This guy definitely did a lot to help, though.

Religion and child abuse go hand in hand
If your religion has a consistent history of being used to justify all sorts of abuse, don't be surprised when your religion is treated as one of the reasons for said abuse. Prove your religion deserves trust by not engaging in said abuse, as well as being the exception and accepting this attitude towards your religion as something justified that you will have to overcome with kindness, none of this passing the buck stuff. I've met and heard of many christians that I respect, because they have demonstrated their kindness and good nature through action.
