  • Here is what you'll need!
    TERRA-COTTA BBQ SMOKER
    SUPPLIES
2 16-inch terra cotta flower pots
    Adhesive gasket tape
    U-hook
    4 nuts
    4 washers
    Power drill
    Thermometer
    Brick
    10-inch grill grate
    14-inch grill grate
    Charcoal briquettes
    Wood chips
    INSTRUCTIONS
    1. Start with the lid. Take one flower pot and line the rim with gasket tape. This will create a good seal.
    2. Flip it so the bottom side is up. Take the U-hook and mark the 2 points then drill a hole so it will fit through. Make sure to start with a smaller drill bit and work your way up. The drill bit heats up and may crack the clay pot so have water to cool off the drill bit and hole.
    3. Place a nut and washer on each end of the hook and thread it through the holes.
    4. Carefully flip the pot on its side and place washer and nut to secure the U-hook. Once it is secured it will become your handle.
    5. Flip it upright and drill a hole in the middle of the pot that is small enough for the thermometer to fit through.
    6. Take the other pot and line the rim with gasket tape.
    7. Drill 2 air vents on the bottom. This will be your base.
Place a brick down which will help raise the grate, or find a larger grill grate that will rest along the sides.
    8. Place hot coals and wood chips on top of the bottom grate.
    9. Add the larger grate on. Get your smoker to the right temperature and place your proteins on your grill and enjoy a nice smokey flavor! 10. You can also not use wood chips and use it as a regular grill!

I built one of these 17 years ago while living in Japan. we didn't have an oven and ovens were expensive. We had turkey for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter for the couple of years we were there.

this is really cool. Thanks for this idea. we have a tiny patio and no room for a BBQ, so this would be perfect.

Perfect for living in an apartment! But first, wash the pots , then place them in an oven the way you would a cast iron pan ( another words you want to season it )and second make sure you do not use indoors people! Anytime you create something other than for its purpose, always research more before you go! I am going to try this out though............... thanks for sharing.

WHERE do you get the small grill to fit the pots?

This looks great - but I'm worried about the longer term effects. Doesn't the vapourised fat permeate the ceramic and then stink after a while when it starts to decay?

This article put my mind at ease after reading so many comments that say this is unsafe mommyperfect.com/2015/09/baking-with-terra-cotta-ceramic-pottery/ ...people have been cooking in terracotta for thousands of years. & as this ⬆ blogger says, even Martha Stewart bakes in Terra cotta. Done deal. Totally making this! 😘 gonna follow the instructions for preparing & seasoning the pots first, tho 😉

I tried this but my pot cracked open, any reason why?

You need to make sure it does not get wet. Otherwise, it will crack when it gets too hot.

Its not a smoker. Smokers are indirect heat. This is direct heat from the coals which is a grill.

      @Zwt256 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You could put a heat deflector of some sort down and then some wood chips and it would be a smoker! 😊

This is Alton Brown's old design for a diy Big Green egg, and it isn't a smoker. No, his DIY smoker is just a really big cardboard box.

The Alton Brown one with an electric burner in the bottom is still superior. More consistent temps for smoking.
