Update from my comment a year before! I did it again! I gave the Rev 2 a second chance, because all the great sound sets that where released here on youtube in the last year or so made me curious if I judged to quick a year before - so I have to say I was wrong! The shock, that my beloved self-made sounds of the 08 sounded different in the rev 2 swayed my judge too much, I have to admit! After I gave the Rev 2 a fresh start with a bunch of sound sets I bought, I'm completely in love with the Rev 2 - it's such a well build, great sounding analog Synth! Even my older sounds from the 08 shine in a new glance after tweaking them with a bit more understanding of the Rev 2! So if anybody experiences the same with his 08 sounds - give it some time! It's sounding different, but not worse, and the better build quality, 16 voices and a lot more possibilities make the Rev 2 a great analog Synth, not only for the money!
@@piotr803 Some parameters changed it's place, and it has a few more parameters now but the workflow is comparable. The Rev 2 is a programers dream! In advertising the remake of the Prophet 5/10 it is always highlighted that the old Prophets where so smooth to program - I don't think it is a big difference to the Rev 2 - it just has a lot more possibilities and only a few of the parameters are actually under the hood! I had no big problems coming from the Prophet 08!
On the Prophet 8 every voice has an independent position in the stereofield.. on the Rev2 every voice is right in the middle. It's a setting I suppose, just like on the old Oberheims.. those have little potties on the side to pan each voice indepently.. Aside from this I don't hear much of a difference between those 2.
Many patches sound identical, but in some there is a noticeable difference. In general the difference in color could be just due to the difference in components
Yeah - to my ears it seems to Pro8 (kbd) has slight differences in the resonance peaks. Especially noticeable on Tom Sawyer patch - other's are more subtle, but there. I'm guessing the patches were simply "ported verbatim" - yes? If so, thats' what I'm hearing. Interesting. I prefer the overall sound of the older version.
Honestly, the only difference I can hear is that the panning is somewhat different between the two. I bet if you tweaked that it would sound pretty much the same.
Rev 2: Flatter, lighter, less mystique. P8: Gravitas, oomph, and that certain magic that Dave's best synths have. Sequential podium of greatness: Gold: Prophet 5/10 Silver: Pro 3 Bronze: (tie) Prophet 08/Prophet 6
I've owned the 6, the 10 and the 8. After playing a 12, I disagree. The twelve is as mystical and in your face as you program it to be. I appreciate what you've said though, politely disagree.
No, REV2 does everything the P’08 does, and lots, lots more … and the P6 is trumped by the P5/10 … Put a tiny bit of drive/saturation in the REV2, if you need to … but you can’t make the P’08 cleaner/quieter … Oh, and 16 Voices … layers, splits, FX …
Wouldn't the velocity curve of the Prophet '08 keyboard (it's not a Fatar) be different than the Fatar keyboard that the Rev2 desktop is presumably designed to interface with? When I had an '08 desktop, I noticed a dramatic difference on some patches whether I was using a Yamaha, Fatar or DSI Prophet '08 keyboard as a controller. It would affect filter settings quite noticeably, for example.
I think you may be right. Patches like the Solon swell on the Rev2 are missing like the entire sub bass and bass region present in the 8, and it could be because of this.
Tom: I played them both over a Yamaha S90-XS weighted keyboard when I made the comparison for myself (When I ordered the Rev2 and still had the 08 in the studio) and the difference in sound is obvious! I had made lots of own sounds in my 08 - transferred to the Rev2 they sounded flat and almost digital - just like samples from my 08! You are right in your point that different keyboards make the sounds behave different, but the Rev2 seems to be designed for value for money reasons - they changed something in the sound architecture! For example the panning of the voices is fixed now - why is that? It had a strong influence on the overall sound! I could not believe it in the first place because I hungered to get rid of the shitty keys of the 08 and really longed for the eight voices plus but the sound did not kept up to the original so I kept the 08!
@@frankbossert1002 I think the keys are great I suppose if you're a piano player you'd want heavy action but in that case you'd have 2 boards on a 2 tier stand, the 08 is fine for synth/organ sounds.
@@themusicalsynthesizer8311 Indeed, makes me think of some other old digital/hybrid synths bad reputation, many of which was nothing more than that, just a bad reputation (digital=cold). I still would like to give the P12 a go, I was set and on the lookout when the Rev2 dropped, so never got to play it.
@@themusicalsynthesizer8311 I agree with you on both accounts. P08 is all about the programing, ironic that it took a rev2 for group think see this. P12 is one of my favorite all time synths, it can do all the things!
Seen this in practically all forums, the older synth in question always sounds "warmer" or "more organic" or whatever. The new stuff is almost always inferior, yet no one bothers to actually do an ABX test to confirm their own confirmation bias. Dave Smith from a video even says that they're using the same Curtis part they've always used, most likely minor software differences. These things are also analog so no 2 synths are going to sound alike anyway.
The Musical Synthesizer I was replying to the original comment about being “warm” but you’re preaching to the choir here-yeh both are great instruments and it’s all in the programming. I’ll clarify, there is definitely an undercurrent that “vintage” is better, even if it’s basically the same instrument. Moog Sub/Subsequent 37 is a better example or even the D reissue.
As a Prophet '08 owner, I listened with great curiosity. My take, is there was more sonic weight to the Rev2. As another comment pointed out, especially in the lower frequencies. The '08 seemed richer and warmer though. The filter sounds juicier to my ears. While I agree partially with the earlier comment that filter settings could be tweaked to make the two synths closer, I believe the difference is greater than that. I would bet some of the difference has to due with the Rev2 running through the effects board (even if the effects are off) after leaving the VCAs. Just my 2 cents...
Agree the filter difference is more than just the settings - the filters feel like they have a different overall quality - the Rev 2 slightly smoother, the Prophet 8 slightly sharper / aggressive / raw - neither better or worse - just different and either one might work better for a given purpose.
I agree re: often needing to rein in the low end on the P08 - the Rev2 I've found is more balanced overall - easier to fit in a mix... but there's that raw quality to the P08 which is hard to let go of...
Indeed, I have both and I love them both, will not sell the P´´08, because it is build better and somehow, maybe the years, it sounds a bit smoother, where the REV2 can sound really awful. The REV2 is still a very good machine and I enjoy using the new features.
Did you hear any big differences ? I Didn't use headphones but it seems that the Rev 2 has a bit more sub bass, and the filter feels a little bit smoother.
my take was: despite being very similar, there are differences that are perceptible... which one is better is probably a matter of taste, but if you're considering upgrading from one to the other and need certain patches from the Prophet 8 to sound exactly the same, then be cautious... overall felt the P08 is slightly more raw/analogue/alive but somewhat unruly, whereas the Rev2 was more controlled/balanced and probably easier to fit into a mix... both are great!
I did migrate from the prophet 08 to the REV2/16, and after listening to this, the differences mostly feel to be due to just some very slight filter tweaking. Also, could the comparative ages be responsible for those subtle, but noticeable differences? There’s up to a 10 year variance in usage between these two.
I have been listening your good video on great monitors (PSI AUDIO + Focals). There is, most of the times, a HUGE différence between the two bad boys right here. REV 2 is smoother, more natural, a little beat warmer and clearer on some of the mid fréquencies, prophet 8 is a bit more "Kicking in the door" and the saturation is really coming forward on the attack of the sounds, while the saturation on the Rev 2 is a bit "moving" making the sound "A live". This is my 2 cents.
The REV2 sounds more like a VA and more thinier, more hi-fi, nothing special that you cant get with a - lets say - Virus. The Prophet 08 sounds more organic an classic. "Homage to Synthmania" and I am at Boards of Canada^^
You got a good point there, Pete! It is caused to the missing "voice pan" parameter! I also sent the rev2 back and kept my 08! The P08 is an absolutely underrated Gem - it can almost hold up to my OBX-A but with a lot more possibilities in sound creation! I think it had a lot to do with all these wind bags in forums that set the early mood for the P08! And it is a matter of how deep you go into an instrument like this - sometimes I feel like many of the loud haters never made a single sound with these instruments, if they ever had one under their hands! :-)
The stereo image is changing between them even same patch is loaded. I am not expected a scientific comparison but it is obvious that somethin wierd. For this type comparisons gain stages should be checked, same cables same interface must be used? BTW thanks for this video. Bests!
Sounded to me like the Rev 2 has slightly more balls to the sound especially heard whilst playing the lower octaves. The 08 I think sounded brighter on one of the patches? Tough decision between these two synths what to buy :|
You don't happen to know the synth used for Laura's theme twin peaks do you? That with the chorus is so fuzzy, warm and wide. It's really beautiful. Did he use a T8? If you haven't seen this it's amazing: th-cam.com/video/rgXLEM8MhJo/w-d-xo.html
Have heard that Angelo Badalamenti bit in a mix Nicolas Jaar did a few years ago. I think the strings on the original was the Roland MKS70 - here's an interesting Q&A with the synth player on that soundtrack: www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/391bfa/i_am_the_twin_peaks_synthesizer_player_and_more/
Thanks so much for this video! However, despite having the same patch, there's vast differences like panning etc as mentioned. Could this be perhaps because of sound tower not "translating" the patches accurately? Perhaps manually checking that all parameters are the same might help? I've often faced issues with patches going wonky on dump/restore. My 08 started giving problems and went in for repair while I'd ordered the rev2. Bereft of either, I went in to a store and tried the rev2 and to my ears it sounded like "more" of what made the 08 awesome and lively. Once again, thanks for your time :)
@@kierenmoore3236 my intuition was that the prophet 8 sound was more raw and alive - i wondered whether the digital fx section of the signal chain on the rev 2 meant that some of the analogue vibe was lost - the prophet 8 felt like raw electricity from start to finish... for me synths are all about character and it felt like it was easier to tease and draw character and life out of the prophet 8...
What I hear here: The Rev2 certainly seems brighter … on patches where you would want more low mids/lows, the Rev2 seems thinner whilst the P ‘08 seems to have more heft … Would you say that’s a fair summary? I agree that the lack of ADCs and DACs in the signal path (P ‘08) is usually a good thing …
I’ve done my own direct, side-by-side now. This is an awful comparison, btw. Transferred patches need some tweaking to sound their best. Also, making use of VCM on the REV2 makes it sound like almost any other analog synth you want it to. You can make it sound as warm as you want. I have to wonder how many people have flipped their REV2s, without ever discovering this technique! 🙃
I suspect this may be a bit of a pointless comparison? I bought my Rev2 about 18months ago and i recognise none of these “presets” in this video. I’m assuming therefore someone tried to copy a bunch of Prophet 8 presets on the Rev2 for the purposes of this video. If not, can someone please tell me where to get these presets for my Rev2?
These presets are on the Prophet 08. Not the Rev2. The last 2 patches are his own. You can download the Prophet 08 factory presets to your Rev2 for free at the Sequential website. Highly recommended.
@@themusicalsynthesizer8311 I listened again with headphones and found out why the Prophet 8 is sounding more 'organic': in some sounds, the voices are panned across the stereo panorama, while the REV2 voices are located in the middle: T8 Strings, Solon Swell, Homage to Synthmania. So: the wider sounds of the Prophet 8 tricked my ears and gave me the impression of being more warm and organic. I own a REV2. And I have to say, that it does not excel plug-ins like Ominsphere and Diva concerning analogue sounds.
Both very similar. Some patches I prefer the rev 2 some I prefer the original. Sometimes the rev sounds more snappy - sometimes the original sounds more punchy and the rev 2 sounds softer or darker with less high end fizz. I'm sure with some minor tweaks they could be made even more similar. I'd take a rev 2 over the original I sold for ease of modulation and built in effects, waveshaping, double the voices and a nicer screen. It's a nice improvement. The main disappointment I have is the lack of a live panel editing mode - it would be so easy and cheap to implement too.
"Bitimbral Synth Controllergate": I'm having an upset about the fact that Sequential never publicly disclosed that the Rev2 is NOT completely 'two synths in one' (neither did Novation about the Summit). Because the two layers can NOT independently respond to pitchbend and related types of control messages, locally or by MIDI in. You might think 'no big deal'...but then, would you buy a synth that didn't have pitchbend? To be clear they can do pitchbend, just not on both 'layers' or 'parts' (not both synths) at once. So there's no way that is really 'bitimbral' or 'two synths in one' without one of these>>> * . They have committed an ethical indiscretion by not putting in an asterisk with this info. I've had one contact with them so far but there was not a good attitude about this fact. I'm in the process of deciding how to handle this and if they are not going to inform the public I may drop a comment on a bunch of key sites. I may return the Rev2 I just bought over this. I may have bought something else instead. Strikingly, the Novation Summit has the SAME or SIMILAR issue! I had contact with their USA rep and his was MUCH more concerned about it and it was a better experience than with Sequential. These companies need to be called about about this behavior, unless you think it's just fine and cool to leave this info out EVERYWHERE, in all marketing materials and public info AND left out of the manuals. So, ok to not tell us your synth can't do pitchbend?
In multi mode, do the two separate layers on the Rev2 only respond to basic MIDI CCs, like note on/off, filter, etc? Or are you claiming it's even worse than that? If it's the former, I don't imagine it'd be hard for them to fix that with firmware.
@@jimmygray3452 they've had three years. The Problem is that pitchbend, modwheel, and aftertouch can't be simultaneously independent in any regard in real time between the two layers. And there is no way to switch the control. It always mergers to both layers. Whatever the response programmed into each layer for those controllers, is how they will both respond any time those controls are used either locally or coming into the synth on either channel from an external source. So if you want to stop unwanted controller response for a layer you have to edit it's program to nullify that response. The CC's seem to be independent if I remember my testing. But that in no way a workable substitution for pitchbend, it's a unique bipolar controller. And it's not for the other two either, since those controllers are well, often, primary controllers from a patch creation point of view. It's just a huge and inexplicable incompletion that that primary controllers are not independent. And the owners manual couldn't be much more clear with it's false claim that those controllers are independent.
eltouristoduo you are completely incorrect, both layers can respond independently via midi. Obviously they can’t respond independently from the built in keyboard and wheels.
@@iaingraham7276 Im NOT completely incorrect. My comment explained. Maybe you just didn't read it. The two layers DO respond to midi note on/off independently, but NOT pitchbend, NOT modwheel, NOT aftertouch. The owner manual says they DO. It LIES. This is NOT true or full multitymbral. Repeat, you literally can NOT pitchbend the two layers independently.
I don’t get why people keep saying prophet ‘08. Rev2 is superior in every way. It depends really on people’s preference. Rev2 is slightly more richer and cuts through the mix a lot better but all depends on how the filter envelopes etc. on both are used. If you’re processing through pedals and on board processing via your daw then opt for the rev2.
Cheers - I posted the patch half way down this page of this thread - www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-and-electronic-music-production/1134163-dsi-prophet-08-rev-2-a-72.html
Agree - the pan spread is definitely different - it's narrower on the Rev2 relative to the Prophet 8 - you could probably increase the pan spread on the Rev2 to match the two.
great comparison. I don't think there's enough difference to matter for my purposes. I wish there could somehow be such a comparison for the Rev2 vs the Novation Summit. I have a feeling most of the time I would pick out and prefer the rev2. The problem with the Rev2 is the bitimbral control stuff is crap, won't respond to pitchbend and modwheel on two channels no real HPF, always sends midi volume on base midi channel only from the volume knob, and you can't disable that or put it on secondary midi channel. This list of problems goes on, but those are at the top. The Rev2 has been out so long already idk if they can or will address those, but I'm going to ask them to.
I tried comparing Rev2 and Summit. They’re too different for this, really … and excel at different sound types. VCO v DCO v Hybrid v Digital are each their own things, imho …and then, there are brighter and darker types/specialists within those categories, too … 🙄🙃
I'm sure the rev2 is just as capable of warm tones as the 08, and if you listen to this comparison below its more of a accurate depiction that they're basically identical. th-cam.com/video/f4VsG2-F4lg/w-d-xo.html
Interesting video. Solon swell sounds much nicer on the 08, possibly due to seeming like it has a chorus or some type of stereo enhancement effect? That's odd as obviously the 08 doesn't have any effects. Is there some trick with the programming being used in that patch? Or is it just osc panning? Also, I think it's possible that the differences we're hearing between the two are down to the fact that the calibration of the rev 2 compared to the 08 is never going to be a 1-1 exact copy, also I'm sure that there would be some tiny circuit changes. If that's the case, then simply loading in the patches wouldn't be an accurate representation of how these two compare. The only other option is to manually tweak the synths in order to try and land exactly on the spot. I don't know, maybe you've tried this and can comment on whether the two match up even closer when tweaked slightly? Thanks
Agree that Solon swell sounds much better on the 08 - there's no chorus on it - the parameter settings are all exactly the same - the explanation I think is that a value of X pan spread on the 08 does not create the same effect as on the Rev2 - I'm pretty sure you could boost the pan spread on the Rev2 to make it more similar to the 08 - but there's also something a bit more raw about the 08 which comes out on that patch. The aim of the video was to help Prophet 08 owners understand whether patches from their Prophet 08s would sound the same on the Rev2 if they just loaded up the same settings on the Rev2... working out whether patches could be made to sound the same by manually tweaking the Rev2 is a separate question and challenge!
Yikes , I was very hyped for the rev2 because of its expanded functionality but for some reason the prophet 8 just sounds better , and clearly is different regardless if DSI marketing says they’re replicas , because they’re absolutely not . Even if you upload the same sounds to the rev2 , they do NOT sound the same . For me , I almost feel stuck between a rock and a hard place .. the raw sounds of the oscillators and filter in the prophet 8 are nicer and the rev2 is 85% there . But the extra features gives it that boost ... but the basic raw sounds from the osc and filter really make those feautures not so nice for me .... it’s like comparing a moog sub 37 to a model D .. I would kill for the raw sounds of the model D with sub 37 features ... guess we really can’t have our cake and eat it too

It's sounding different, but not worse, and the better build quality, 16 voices and a lot more possibilities make the Rev 2 a great analog Synth, not only for the money!
What differences in programming approach should people keep in mind?
@@piotr803 Some parameters changed it's place, and it has a few more parameters now but the workflow is comparable. The Rev 2 is a programers dream! In advertising the remake of the Prophet 5/10 it is always highlighted that the old Prophets where so smooth to program - I don't think it is a big difference to the Rev 2 - it just has a lot more possibilities and only a few of the parameters are actually under the hood! I had no big problems coming from the Prophet 08!

A lot of people disagree.
The Rev 2 sounds like it's in Mono? there is a drastic difference in the stereo field, to the point of possible issue?
yes, it sounds like the ping pong delay is active on the prophet 08?

On the Prophet 8 every voice has an independent position in the stereofield.. on the Rev2 every voice is right in the middle. It's a setting I suppose, just like on the old Oberheims.. those have little potties on the side to pan each voice indepently.. Aside from this I don't hear much of a difference between those 2.
PROPHET IS MORE DEPTH AND WIDTH!! STEREO ! LIKE SUPER CLEAN
They’re both Prophets … 😊 …
Sequential podium of greatness:
Gold: Prophet 5/10
Silver: Pro 3
Bronze: (tie) Prophet 08/Prophet 6
I've owned the 6, the 10 and the 8. After playing a 12, I disagree. The twelve is as mystical and in your face as you program it to be. I appreciate what you've said though, politely disagree.
No, REV2 does everything the P’08 does, and lots, lots more … and the P6 is trumped by the P5/10 …
Put a tiny bit of drive/saturation in the REV2, if you need to … but you can’t make the P’08 cleaner/quieter …
Oh, and 16 Voices … layers, splits, FX …

They both sound lovely. Funny though, I’ve never heard the 08 described as warm until reading these comments.
@@SpinThis Well, Subsequent 37 does have noticeably more headroom than the Sub 37 … this was the whole point of it, really …

Ice Planet sounds distorted/garbled in some spots on the REV2, not sure if it's the unit, upload or the recording but my REV2 doesn't sound like that.
@@solon_music So if people are saying the bass is better on the rev2 then why would you need to back bass off the 08 when tracking?

Love my Rev 2
I did migrate from the prophet 08 to the REV2/16, and after listening to this, the differences mostly feel to be due to just some very slight filter tweaking. Also, could the comparative ages be responsible for those subtle, but noticeable differences? There’s up to a 10 year variance in usage between these two.
I especially agree that the aging chips and circuit boards could create changes. The '08 sounds brasher and a little more in your face to my ears.
would you recommend the prophet 08 as a first synth?
I thought the rev 2 was the same engine but w efx extra modulation etc.
I sent the Rev 2 back and bought a P 08. Rev 2, who hit the mono switch?
You got a good point there, Pete! It is caused to the missing "voice pan" parameter! I also sent the rev2 back and kept my 08! The P08 is an absolutely underrated Gem - it can almost hold up to my OBX-A but with a lot more possibilities in sound creation! I think it had a lot to do with all these wind bags in forums that set the early mood for the P08! And it is a matter of how deep you go into an instrument like this - sometimes I feel like many of the loud haters never made a single sound with these instruments, if they ever had one under their hands! :-)

rev2 has more definition. scooped sound. p8 has that roundness i look for in analog synths...
Now I'd like some cherry pie
any difference in what they can do?
Thanks so much for this video! However, despite having the same patch, there's vast differences like panning etc as mentioned. Could this be perhaps because of sound tower not "translating" the patches accurately? Perhaps manually checking that all parameters are the same might help? I've often faced issues with patches going wonky on dump/restore.
My 08 started giving problems and went in for repair while I'd ordered the rev2. Bereft of either, I went in to a store and tried the rev2 and to my ears it sounded like "more" of what made the 08 awesome and lively.
Once again, thanks for your time :)
Do you still own both of these? Which, if either, have you sold?
I sold the Rev 2 and kept the Prophet 8.
@@solon_music What decided it for you?
Highly recommended.
nice twin peaks
I have a REV2, and I can confirm the results of this comparison. The REV2 sounds less warm and organic.
Nonsense. Want examples?
Both very similar. Some patches I prefer the rev 2 some I prefer the original. Sometimes the rev sounds more snappy - sometimes the original sounds more punchy and the rev 2 sounds softer or darker with less high end fizz. I'm sure with some minor tweaks they could be made even more similar. I'd take a rev 2 over the original I sold for ease of modulation and built in effects, waveshaping, double the voices and a nicer screen. It's a nice improvement. The main disappointment I have is the lack of a live panel editing mode - it would be so easy and cheap to implement too.
plus better keybed on the Rev2
Hi. Nice comp. What did you send it thru(the chain)? Kind regards Alieu Stian Samateh
I've had a P'08 for many years and can say it cuts through the mix extremely well, sometimes too well.
Synthmania is awesome :) Where can i find/buy that patch?

VCO v DCO v Hybrid v Digital are each their own things, imho …and then, there are brighter and darker types/specialists within those categories, too … 🙄🙃
PS - I have both the REV 2 (16) and the Summit … they’re really quite different … !!
prophet 8 o prophet 08?
@@solon_musicyou should probably make this clear - because that’s not what people are using it for, lol
