Cat built too! They ordered special welding generators from lincoln and assembled the unit 4 retail. Its unkown how many but some think less than 50 machines. I believe i have the 1st built in may 1955, according to lincoln the generators on my machine is one the first 6 sent to cat. This cat engine serial number is xxxx001. BTW, its not really a portable (i put the axles under it) it was originally placed by crane. thanks 4 watching. specification info links here. i.postimg.cc/9MZrtS8K/img179.jpg
That is a super machine and an excellent restoration job, i have used quite a few engine driven welders, but nothing like that, back here in England they are mostly honda or moza, well done
very good videos, it reminds me of the time of my very young grandfather and father, my congratulations for such excellent work and good videos, the pony has a very peculiar sound, here where I live there is not a single one
thanks, its a very uncommon machine, i believe this number 1of total of 25 built to the mid 60's. some were powered with the smaller d311 engine, but we don't how many…. i know of 2 using this engine, i owned them both and sold number 3 to another cat collector. i don't stick weld!
That really special. Very nice too. I think that would work well for a job site where you were welding lots of steel. I bet that thing would run all day with out any problem. By all day I mean 14 hours. I use to work on big jobs and they used the welder to light up the sight sometime.
At first I thought it was an engine swap into an old Lincoln or Merc. Still nice to see vintage machinery getting a second life. Engine starts at 6.19.
thanks 4 ur comments, maybe u got time to look at this vid of another cat refureb i done, it has a information placard. th-cam.com/video/jaUunkwRP6U/w-d-xo.html thanks again.
When I worked for ST Pipeline they had an old tax-rig that still had the 4 stack of twin-arc welders. I run miles and miles of beads in pipegang for whistle Johnson 20” 24” 30” pipe. Great machines I still have a 1982 SA-200 on my truck just can’t make myself buy a new machine
@@wrenchguy 4 generators run off the front of a D7 cat. Now everyone runs a big generator with a 4 pack of suitcase welders as a tac-rig. Whistle Johnson was the pipeman and friend, he ran the pipegang.
American vehicles had crank holes until or through the 1940s. I have seen Soviet autos built in the 1970s with crank holes. How else can you start a dead battery car on Siberian ice.
Great job on a piece of American made iron. Two huge names, Caterpillar Tractor of Peoria, Illinois and Lincoln Electric of Cleveland, Ohio would love to see the correspondence between the two companies when they were designing the prototype. If you can make a video in the future of two guys welding with 1/4” rods at the same time to see if the old girl can roll some coal!
Right now the tongue weight will be very heavy. If you put air bags on both the axles, that is a set for the front and a set for the back you can balance the weight to whatever tongue weight you need. On slippery grass and mud you might want more weight or less if you are pulling it with a pickup.
Thanks, Its been all figured out at 500lbs. See this later vid for the finished 6' tongue. Tows perfect with my 1ton. th-cam.com/video/8owiMBF0KFU/w-d-xo.html&t
Beautiful job. Do both of welders control the exciter circuit. It amazes me the people that call themselves a welder that don’t 7018 electrode is. Wire feed kills the trade
i'm not knowledgable to answer ur exciter question… alls i can tell u is it has a oversized exciter with 2 sets of brushes. progress is good in most cases.
I whole heartedly agree with the 7018 rods. And, to use only the 1/8 7018 for all thicknesses of steel being welded is also a foolish underuse of available resources. I use 1/8, and 5/32 in my jobs. Would enjoy trying out your welder.... I bet it has a very stable, and silky-smooth arc. Enjoy it..
The lift lug on this 1 was missing. It was a unique special order cat part. I knew I was going to put axles under it to make it towable so i never ordered a new lug. I did move a second 1 i had to another trailer using a winch. thx 4 watching.
You've done a masterful job here, with the paint job, decals, and aluminum work too. I'm wondering, did Caterpillar ever 'copyright ' or patent that grille. At a glance you know right away that it's a Cat. comin' at you. Like the 7 bar Willys Jeep grille too, and that WAS and still is copyrighted.
So why did you set the camera where we could see mostly wheels? On the type videos, we like to see the engine and exhaust stacks! Although they are some nice wagon wheels rims, they aren't doing much....

this is a textbook start right out of the caterpillar starting procedures manual. this guy is one of about two people on TH-cam that starts his engine per the manual. the guy engages the pinion at 4:20 and throws compression to it at 5:18. that big lever on the side is the throttle! read your manual and you will see where the compression lever is!
the only flaw with this guy is he refers to the starting engine as a pony. I have yet to see where caterpillar ever references a starting engine as a pony? they are starting engines, not pony motors!
its mule skinner slang not having to say 2 words. Iffen you were member of the british empire you'd be calling it "donkey" or "pup" engine. No way is the welder redone to original… (boring) its all good , thanks for ur comments.
Bob W Since it was the first start since it was rebuilt, he was probably ensuring good oil circulation and pressure. The old John Deere 520D had the same procedure for every start.
Not really, this CAT built unit was originally placed by crane at longer term projects like tank farms, shipyards etc. its powerunit engine drives 2 300 amp generators for 2 guys can weld off it. I put axles under it for getting it to shows. Try this link for 1955 cat info page about it. "i.postimg.cc/9MZrtS8K/img179.jpg" It should enlarge too.
What a beautiful machine! You obviously put a lot of care into creating this. Thank you for posting!
I wasnt even aware Cat powered portable welding units, Thank you for sharing! Beautiful restoration!

Very nice job. These old machines deserve to live on. They are some of the best we ever made.
sequoyah59 there was only 6 ever made
very good videos, it reminds me of the time of my very young grandfather and father, my congratulations for such excellent work and good videos, the pony has a very peculiar sound, here where I live there is not a single one
Saw this unit at Rollag MN this past September. Beautiful job on restoring.
thanks, thank you for a great show! It was my 1st time there.
Stunning showroom restoration. Your work shows how it should be done .👌
That pony motor works pretty damn good. It hardly bogged down when it turned that engine over.
Beautiful machine! I didn't know anything like this existed. Thanks for sharing.

This is beautiful and a work of artistic preservation. I’am so dangled impressed. Thanks for the video.
NICE OLD CAT powered welder!!! Lord I LOVE IT !! Great restoration on this piece !!! John A Bellas

Brilliant refurbishment. - congratulations.
Nice welding set, excellent restoration project.
Great job on the rig! I'd suggest some bib overalls for ya tho. Nothing to pull up to keep ya butt covered. I love mine! lol.
The Old Style and Miller Killer stickers are a nice touch. Same with the Moon Eyes.
Great to see that 1950's rad cowl! just as it would look waay back in the 50's! no doubt exciting then as now
That is a fine work of art. Congratz on having that beauty.
Great video! Love the sound of that engine! Listen to that baby purr!

Mike, I am the welder that talked to you at Bowling Green show, great job on your restoration.
You have all the cool toys !
I like the hole under the radiator for a starting handle. Nothing like a bit of optimism !
Its for barring over under decompression, not starting

you broke No. one Rule , shut off pony fuel to stop pony motor....IE let it run out of fuel !! start it as it runs out !!! Very important !!
No worries man, I know and understand 100% the operation of my equipment.
You still owe us us an explanation for this, your old Cat can't be different from all the others
SUPERB AND BEAUTIFUL !!! Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful machine
Looks good where did you find it I worked for contracting and materials and now Meade who bought contracting and materials
I got 2 from the same farm out near la salle ill. No. 1 and No. 3, they had these decals on them. "i.postimg.cc/J0tLVsTb/SAM-2904-zpsmxeeh3gf.jpg"

i been trying to get a couple guys here with big rod to work her. thanks.
Excellent!what a weldabeast.
I want one of these even though I don't know how to weld!!
If your engine requires an engine then your engine is just the right size.
The Zinc coated Donkey engage lever looks great
Its actually cast aluminum that i polished, thanks 4 looking u guys.
lever is aluminum.
Beautiful twin welder

i don't know, i now wonder about the iconic 32 ford grille? somewhat similar looking to the cat grille above.
I use those same guages SW series- there nice- early Case used them too
They're modern repros, i wanted all to match. It's a HOTROD, not going for original.
now thats nice work there.
I think i speak for everyone here stating the obvious but, they sure don't make em like they used to.
They still do just depends on what you want you want to spend. Buy once cry once.
Another nice rare piece!

Beautiful!
Ever got bit by the spark plug?
YES, but not on this 1, it has the optional guard/covers. thanks.
Beautiful job.

WoW! Electric-start pony. Why, you can just go sit somewhere, and let the rig do all the work
Sweet!!!
thats a real CAT engine not a perkins painted yellow
The tires are nice but it would be better if we saw something else than the tires.
