    You are the only person I've seen start those motors properly.

      yep, this old 1 I gotta get coolant temp up to 140 for best results. Thats what starting engine is for. thx.

    That is the best running pony motor I have ever had the pleasure to listen to!

    I love the concept of raising oil pressure before starting main engine. Runs sooo sweet

    That's a great piece of history. I've watched this a dozen times. Being a mechanic and working on many old machines I can appreciate the simplicity and reliability. I'm curious though of the power output of the generator & also fuel consumption. Keep up the good work . Thanks

    Right out of HS in the mid 70's I got a job working with a small time construction company that had 2 of those old late 50's Cat D8's, same engine/pony motor arrangement. They were pretty cool. Those dozers were the old cable operated blades before hydraulics got popularized.

    I haven’t seen a comment about the pony motor exhaust. If like other Cats, and it appears so, the pony motor exhaust goes into a jacket around the intake manifold. This helps warm incoming air for easier starting.

    • @wrenchguy
      @wrenchguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zackly right, this 1 just takes a little longer getting to the diesel intake because of the pony engine location. thanks 4 watching.

    At 0:55 you have your hand on the throttle. Follow the rod back down to the governor, the locking nut for the yoke is loose. It should be lightly nipped up ! BUT before you do that, take the link rod off and straighten it ! Not only will it look better, it'll affect performance / adjustment !

    Built back in the days when CAT was 100 per cent USA made. Excellent quality and long life were the story back then. Now, sadly, so many products are made in China and assembled in Mexico. And now quality and durability are not so good on many products.

    • @bryanmartinez6600
      @bryanmartinez6600 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Al Tinfoil even if it was fully built in the USA it wouldn't matter today even China can build great things but it's the intention. Today most things are focused on it features but they are throw away as the features become obsolete in a few years

    • @haydenc2742
      @haydenc2742 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More built for use...disposeable, replace...cheaper to buy new, than to repair old one...so stuff is no longer made to last (planned obsolescence)

    I would have liked to have seen the exhaust stack on start up, but what a lovely example of Caterpillar power.
    Speaking of power, what is the KVA rating on the generator , In fact all the specs. would be nice to know.

    What do you use this GEN set for? just a hobby or do you actually use it for the electricity it generates? either way it’s very cool,,, The idol we hear it running at,,,is that it’s working RPMs or does it have to rev up any for load?

    • @wrenchguy
      @wrenchguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Collector of vintage equipment, saving, refurbing and getting it running. Then sometimes getting it to engine/tractor shows. In that vid its idling which is like 600rpm. For electric it needs 900 rpm, see the grinder vid for it running at 900, it doesn't sound that much diff. That big machine i can't really load it down to get it really barking. Its a heavy toy.
