    Did you know what UDIM's were ? And if so, did you use them ?

    • @manollobango

      I've already heard about UDIMs and the idea behind this sounds great at the beginning e.g. in this way you can get a higher texel density for each part of your model which results in having a higher texture quality without the need of using higher texture resolution which also improves the performance depending on the application area. But otherwise if you want to keep the textel density for each part the same then I can't see any advantage in using this workflow. So for now it's hard for me to understand the benefits of using UDIMs or to using them correctly.
      BTW congrats on your 1k upload!

      Hey hai, I am watching your videos since I started as a 3d artist, thanks for that. Now I ran into an issue in importing mesh from Maya to substance painter. When I import the mesh the log shows that either 'mesh doesn't have uv coordinate' or 'mesh uv face splitting between tiles' but back in Maya I have place every mesh uv map on each tile accordingly. And I have checked the UDIMS per texture tile option in substance painter. But I don't no what is the problem .can you help sir

      I actually was just looking into them today and I realized 4k wasn't enough detail as I'm working on a rather large hero prop. Your workflow however, is right in line with the tool combination I'm switching to. Since I'm switching from Softimage to Maya (finally) your tutorials are right to the point and exactly what I needed here. Said it before but more people need to see your stuff, it's gold!

      Why dont you just use different map channels (multiple materials) to increase texture quality ?

    I don't get it, what advantage does it have to what is already existing? If you increased the resolution of your classic texture you would have more pixels for the body section as well as the rest. Or you can make a multi material with the same result plus the ability to change the texture type for each section... Is it specific to substance painter? (I don't use it)

  • @p0rt3r
    @p0rt3r 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So it's basically a clever way to use the entire texture space for each section of the mesh, without having to deal with overlapping UVs?
    But in only works, if the tool at hand allows each section to have its own material.
    Otherwise you have to break it up into several meshes and the whole concept becomes obsolete, since then each mesh has its own separate UVs anyway.
    Is that correct or is there more to it?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not about overlapping UV's You could still have those using UDIMS. It is about having move real estate for your textures

    • @p0rt3r
      @p0rt3r 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MHTutorials3D My point is this: You could get more real estate simply by up-scaling those UV shells and assigning each one its own material. Even if you keep them all in one tile, heavily overlapping each other, you get that additional real estate for your textures. It's a hell to work with, though.
      And so UDIM is the clever idea to use texture tiling to your advantage, to move those shells to other tiles, so you don't have to deal with them overlapping.
      Even if the software doesn't offer this kind of layout out-of-the-box (like my old version of Cinema 4D) it is easy enough to manually achieve the result that way.

  • @rKringtonezone
    @rKringtonezone 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there any advantage to use UDIM instead of single tile UV except textured resolution???.

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @donovanbaine8842
      @donovanbaine8842 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      well....to be honest i dont know much about maya i use 3ds max but by using udims in max or maya i was thought by using packing for every uv then place them in the uv box but yes scale is need also for texel density

      If you are using Arnold as a renderer ( example ) then you have to plug your 2D file into an arnold shader, otherwise it won't work

    Awesome video Mike. I have a question about baking and exporting maps once your done. Is there a way to have all of your textures baked into a single map even if you have separate UDIMS??? Say I want to use UDIMS to get high level detail but then I want to bake everything out as a single map in 2k resolution to export into Unreal etc.

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would get a 32K map or something like that or you would kill all the detail when bringing back to 2K
