Indeed there are so many great features and tools in Maya that go unnoticed, and this is one of them for sure! They deserve to be introduced at cocktail parties with live bands. Thank you for bringing them to light to make our lives better!
7:41 symmetrize to help optimize space usage 9:20 also having symmetrical UV is helpful if you only want to paint half the model then flip the half over for the other side for a faster workflow
Probably the most useful video i ever seen about uv maps, i've been a slave trying to make a nice UV of a couple of trees in a environment, and u guys just blowed my mind. TNKS SO MUCH
FINALLY. A tool to replace bonus tools' Auto Unwrap UVs tool! Thanks, FlippedNormals for pointing out this new feature! Never would have noticed it otherwise.
*5:40 One can sew and cut in the main viewport too, by making a custom script promoting toolproperties first (extra one line of code before sew, cut or any other uv editor command).
you should make a video on keeping up with the updates of the program youre working in i keep seeing veterans forgeting to check the update log ,this tool you just found out about is there since 2016 ext2
Here's one I'd love to know more about: skin weighting. Particularly in Maya. Now I've done skin weighting for years but I can never find any tips or tricks on it. Most of what I know comes from experience. And whenever I see quality work like Thanos, for example, my jaw hangs open and I wonder how they hell they got such precise deformation.
Is there a way to flip half my UVs and overlap them so get more use of the space? I remember there was a blender plugin that did this which I cant find a way for MAYA.
Thank you for the video! I have a question tho. How to symmetrize the object's, that do not attached to each other in terms of geometry, but symmetrical in worlds space and geometry? (basically, i have gauntlets on a character, and both of them i want to have symmetrical Uv's, but it doesn't work since it's not one single object in terms of geometry) Thank you in advance!
Thanks! For this, I usually keep them as separate objects instead of merging them. Model one, UV map it, duplicate, mirror along -1x and you should be good to go :)
for some reason 3D cut and sew tool stopped highlighting my selected edges unless double click and select an entire row of edges...any advice on how to use a single LMB edge selection?
I'd like to have similar UV Shells to have the same UV, something like copying uv attributes from one model to another model that share similar geometry. Is there an option for it? I have very simple dino teeth for example they look very similar and I would like to uv just one of them, and copy this shell onto all other teeth
this is great but does anyone know how to select a well laid out UV shell on one said of my character's face and mirror the UVs to the other side? my mesh has many UDIMs so theres no central line to select in the UV editor, theres a symmetrise tool under modify and a symmetrise tool under tools, with different icons and theres one in the UV tool kit which has same icon as the modify one but different options id hoped to select a UV shell on one side of the face and hit symmetrise and it'd fix the bad UVs on the other side of the characters face using topology or global mid line/axis but i cant get any to work
You guys just gave me a cheat for iv mapping now I don’t have to take break every time uv mapping gets too much. This will just improve the uv mapping speed.
3dcoat had this long ago and was the only software i know with it( though its unwrap and packing is terrible). Im so glad Maya adopted this tool aswell. im planing to leave 3ds max for Maya and i'm finding more reasons to do so.
would you consider Maya UV tools now as more robust than Headus UV layout?!..sorry if I ask even if apparently it seems You are not familiar with Headus UV layout
Headus UV Layout is generally a more refined tool-set and it's really good. That said, we find that it's overkill for most things, particularly considering the learning curve. You really need to use it a fair bit in order to benefit properly from it. If you UV map once a month, it's overkill.
Ive been using it regularly, and thanks to this video noticed lots of the same features as if autodesk basically copycatted it in certain aspects, but i want to tahnl you for this video becuase iw ouldnt have lookined furter in the MAYA uv editor tools, and i think for imple quick stuff its definitely convenient and lets say it...ABOUT Time AUTODESk did soemthins really important besides MASH gimmicks...its is just a pity that at autodesk appaently it seesm as if they are trying tomak maya seem user friendly byadding stupid 3ds max like buttuons on it, and then on aothe side feel HOUDINI havign features that at autodesk they envy and now the HEADUS LIE UV editor.... As good as the UV tools in Maya are the Editor is extremely laggy, i only have 10k tris in the scene. GTX 1060 and i5 7600. moving a UV shell just hogs everything.
I don't know how to write it and not sound like an ass. Don't mean it in a "this program is better than that one" way. I love Maya. But this is why I use 3dCoat for UV mapping and retopology. And with Maya 2018 autodesk just brought these features from 3d Coat. Looks very similar. But at this point Im just too used to 3d Coat.
@@FlippedNormals Welp, I'm going to reveal all of them in my new video series! Please redirect all of your 43k to me :P On a more serious note, something from the top of my head, i love the new (kind of) feature where u can slide a vertex or an edge by holding shift+ctrl instead of going into "move option" and changing it from there. Im not sure if you mentioned that in a previous modelling video (although something tells me you did). Btw, love your channel and especially the interviews/insights into the industry, keep up the good work!
The Rizom guys said that they made the current Maya UV system, so why not go all the way and use RizomUV or RS? I actually like it better, and don't have to open Maya for just UVs anymore. Thanks for another demon model, just seriously...someday, maybe you can be the "guest of honor" in a Marina Abramovic dinner and be the dinner...and then you'll see fairy tales can come true, it could happen to you...
Wtf are you on about? I know who Marina Abramovic is, but seriously, you're really stretching here and you sound like a religious nut job (I'm Christian and I'm saying that). How do you know these guys aren't Christian? Stop reading too much into things.
if I say truth for uv creation maya is totally waste of time ,because it doesnt work . Using 3d coat or uv layout much better than maya... maybe it can only be use for udims.

I didn't know about the symmetrize tool, this will make my life so much easier! Thanks for the video!
Happy to help, Justin! It's so helpful.
So much knowledge. So little time to discover them all. Thank you
This is great! Is there an updated video? Thanks!
Wow this was helpful. I've lost quite a bit of my hair trying to figure some of this stuff out.
not secret, just end game content.
Lol. Awesome ! Thanks for posting. I’ve been using Maya since Alpha and had no idea this tool existed
OMG!! Im about to cry. THIS IS SOOO USEFULLLLL T_T

One thing that I couldn't get it to work at all times is the stack option in the UV editor. Not sure if you guys covered that in your class or not.
Symmetrize amazing. How do you turn off the rainbow 3D move and sew?
Good job,usfull

Is it possible to cut and sow a uv map to recreate a 3d model with fabric with some form of internal support?
How can you change the uv editor Udim size in maya?
Your voice is like coming from a super hero!
for some reason 3D cut and sew tool stopped highlighting my selected edges unless double click and select an entire row of edges...any advice on how to use a single LMB edge selection?
is there a tutorial somewhere for how to UV map props and hard surfaces?
We have a few other videos on UV mapping yes, which cover props.
About symmetry, how make the mid line of UV to UV space first ?
is that also cover about UDIM in maya ?
awesome quick tutorial .. thanks

my mesh has many UDIMs so theres no central line to select in the UV editor,

Was Automatic UV mapping good? or manual mapping would be better?
Manual is better, but automatic one can be too. Depends on the model.

Make sure the Unfold 3D plugin is loaded :) Its a plugin which ships with Maya used to unfold.
