    Great video Steve, brought back a few memories for me. We first crossed the Nullarbor in '69 and were making regular bi-yearly trips for the next decade or so. I remember reading Len Beadell's book about his adventures when he surveyed the Gun Barrel for the first time when I was living on Koolan Island in the Kimberleys early '70's. Often find myself dreaming of being on the road again but life seems to hold you to the steady pace of living and working for the man. Definitely going to change that very soon. Was a great watch mate, cheers for now mate... ;-}

    The hard sidewalls of adventure tyres are too tough in some cases to remove. They're ok for tubless rim punctures. I stick to normal tyres on my spooked rims for easier repairs.

    Have you got Slime in your tubes? It’s the best solution - literally. It can make 90% of punctures a total non event, and allow you to get away with those stiffer side walls.

  • @markhills3922
    @markhills3922 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your rides are epic Steve. How many K's was this ride, 6-7000? Shame it had to end unceremoniously on the back of a truck with a bodgy tyre.

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, I learnt something on this trip. Never, i repeat, NEVER fit a tubeless type tyre on a tubed rim. The tyre was suggested to me by the local tyre fitter because the sidewalls were more "puncture resistant" but the sidewall was so stiff that it made tyre repair almost impossible with limited tools. On a positive note, the Dingo got out (I went back a few months later to check). Thanks for watching.

    • @markhills3922
      @markhills3922 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mongreldogproductions Ah, so that's what the problem was. Lesson noted. There are tubless options for conventional spoke rims but I'm not sure on how good they would be on an adventure ride taking into account all the things like cats eyes and burrs that can puncture a tyre out there. I'm glad the Dingo got out. I bet he was glad he had an encounter with a decent human being even if he didn't know it at the time. Seeing the dog attack the sheet of tin you had was a surprise to see. Just goes to show what a cornered wild animal will do.
      Good onya!

  • @mongreldogproductions
    @mongreldogproductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    G'Day Dave, they are tailored ear moulds only used for sound deadening and listening to music from MP3 player of phone in my case. A bit pricey but worth every cent. Very effective up to 130 kph before there is any distortions with wind noise. A very 'sound' investment in my books.

      Hi Troy, no I don't. I don't pretend to have the knowledge needed to put together a list like that lol. I'm more about entertaining rather than education. There are a lot of Riders who have done Videos on gear and setup. Have a look at a few of them, go for overnighters close to home and start fine tuning the stuff you use (or may use) and leave the rest at home. Gradually, venture further and further away from home. Start networking with other riders and go in small groups and watch what the others are taking and doing. Good luck.

      Hi Robert Chinnock, I joined the local Roadside Assist mob in Western Australia...the RAC. I did pay for their ‘premium’ package which was quite costly but I did that because I knew I would be travelling some remote parts of Oz. You need to read the fine print though...there are some limits on their cover unless you tick some boxes. The bloke who recovered the bike was a RAC contractor from Kalgoorlie which was a 12 hour turnaround for him. The incident happened on a weekend and if they can’t get you to a ‘repairer” within 24 hours then you don’t pay an excess....like I say, read the fine print before you make the call. Thanks for watching.👍

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi HEL, there is a point where you can ‘legally’ ride alongside the railway line on their service road. Heading east you can travel from Kalgoorlie to Forrest (where we stayed). After that access is denied and a permit is not available up to a Siding named Tarcoola. I think that is because tourists were breaking down out there and waving trains down for assistance. The train takes two km to pull up so that is not a viable option. Adventurers do travel along the whole length of the Trans Continental Railway (myself included on another ride) but you must accept responsibility for your own safety and take certain precautions. Hope you like the vid. Thanks for watching.

      @@vapour250 Hi Hendrik, I’ll try and explain where I’m coming from. I mean no offence and don’t take this personally. I started uploading videos so that my children and grandchildren can get an idea of what I get up to when I go on these adventures. I also liked to share with extended family and friends as well as share with other riders who come with me on these journeys. I also want to look back in time when I can no longer do what I do and relive these experiences later in life. If viewers are entertained by the videos then that is a bonus. I don’t expect viewers to criticize what I do or give me advice on how to improve their viewing experience (once again, no offence intended). That’s what I mean about it being all about me. Thanks for watching.

    Interesting aside that I had read about & listened to many times subsequent , was that dingoes use psychological warfare against other dingo 'tribes' at night . . where they few in number , modulate their individual calls as to seem as one is many & then it sounds like (in reality) two or three dingoes sounding like a whole bunch . lots of that type of stuff goes on at night in relatively still native eco system bush area's

    Watching this in January 2022, and the biggest surprise is that there are police controlled borders between the states of Australia 6 years ago! Why? But regardless of the official reasons, it goes a long way to explain the nonsense we’ve been seeing over the past few months over there.
    Interesting footage that would have been better with more engine noise and less of that canned musac.
    Ride safe
    Peace

      @mongreldogproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi G58, the Border wasn't controlled by the Police. That is the Border crossing between two States here in Oz (South Australia and Western Australia). The Coppers were just doing Breath tests and drug tests. Occasionally they might have sniffer dogs out there as well. It is a very remote part of Australia and would be easy to smuggle contraband across the Border if you were a bad guy. Thanks for watching.

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still clunky....although i cant compare it to any other 1200 cause i've never ridden one. The newer R1200/1250's have a shift assist so you dont need to use the clutch. Maybe that is the answer. Hope you like the vid. Thanks for watching.

    G'day Steve. Really enjoying your videos. My mate and I recently rode from NSW to SA and crossed the Nullarbor on the Old Eyre Hwy to Eucla. Then north to Forrest, west to Rawlinna on the Trans access road, north on the Connie Sue to The Anne Beadell, east to Coober Pedy. We then continued north into the NT to cross the Simpson via the Madigan Line and back to Birdsville. 3 weeks, 6 states and 6 deserts, 7300km. It was great trip. I have a question for you, have you ridden the Trans access road from Kingoonya to Forrest? I'm keen to get back there and explore that area.
    Thanks.

    Hi Steve,
    You do a lot of klms,just wondering what advice you have in regards to dealing with hand numbness and pins and needles.
    I go on short rides and my hands cop a hiding.I try to relax and wiggle my fingers but it keeps happening.
    Thanks

      @mongreldogproductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phil,
      'Pins and needles' is a sensation of uncomfortable tingling or prickling, usually felt in the hands or feet. A common cause is leaning awkwardly on a limb, which presses against the nerves. You need to move the joint or limb to get the blood flowing again...not sure how you do that. There are a lot of 'throttle locks' on the market. These come in handy for long stretches. It means you can relax the right hand at least. Good luck.

      If you have a tubular handlebar that can be swapped out, start by checking the alignment of your wrists when grasping the bar. The wrist should be as straight as possible, not cocked to the left, right, up, or down. For me, a bar off a '73 Yamaha 750 triple was absolutely perfect for my KZ750. Then, add a bar snake or bar weights inserted into the handlebar. The weights dampen any handlebar "buzz" and go a long way towards relieving the pins and needles. Also, try some Oury grips with the big rubber block style surface. They also help absorb some of the high frequency vibes. Finally, depending on road conditions, try holding the grips with your fingers rather than you palm and fingers from time to time - switching changes the stresses. Good luck!

    • @ReferenceFidelityComponents

      Have you tried some "grip puppies" Phil? Neoprene covers that pad out the bars a bit and dampen vibration. Makes longer rides way better than most stock grips.
