  • See part 1 here: • 1982 Plymouth Reliant ...
About a month ago now, I purchased this 1982 Plymouth Reliant essentially sight-unseen off Facebook Marketplace for the measly sum of $300. Over the next few weeks, I'd begun working on it and amassing parts for it. At the end of the last video, I had the car running just long enough to make sure the transmission was engaging.
This video is much shorter, my assistant from last video of course prefers not to appear, but we didn't do that much. Most of the work was getting new rear tires mounted and balanced, and then installing the janky "NHTSA (dis)Approved Racing-Grade Fuel Cell" which you see on the front of the car. Nothing but the finest! It had turned out that the fuel tank is jam packed full of dirt and rust, and that it needs to be replaced. We also fixed a coolant leak caused by a missing bolt.
The real exciting part is what I caught on video - Taking the car around the block for the first time since it was last registered in 1991! To make a short story shorter, it did make it, but it's obviously got some problems.
It's not as interesting, and not revival related so if I do film any of the following work, it won't appear under this revival series. Only the speedo/odo work, none of the other instruments show even the slightest hint of life. The carb obviously is junk and needs a rebuild badly. Fuel tank replacement is in order, and I think it would be in my interest to change the transmission fluid and filter sooner rather than later. There's also still a coolant leak somewhere, which seems a bit like it might be head gasket related. Mopar or no car, right? Parts are on the way, maybe I'll film the head gasket or at least part of it.
Thanks so much for reading the description this far! If you watched the whole series, I want to thank you for watching all the way through. This is my first "real" revival video, and the first video series I've put time into editing. I appreciate any questions, comments, and advice.

Would love to see more on this vehicle, like troubleshooting the rest of the gauges and instrument panel, as well as maybe giving it a thorough cleaning. : )

We'll see! I'm waiting on more parts for this car right now. I've actually already filmed the majority of my next big video project, it's car and computer related. You'll probably see that soon. I also have plans for a few other videos in the works.

Truly. Even as beautiful as the interior in this example is, it's still appallingly bad, and this is coming from someone who owns and operates a Yugo.

@@AiOinc1hardly comparable to a yugo!! I lived in the era when these were new and drove them and owned them. You’ve just a gotta tired old POS by any standard, which isn’t a basis for criticism on what they were like when they were new at all!!

@@Channel-cm7yc This car is like new, it never even got it's first air filter change. Two of the tires were still original to the car when I got it. They're just awful cars, with horrible plastic dashes that always warp and horrible plastic steering wheels that always crack. It gets horrible fuel economy, it's not really very comfortable or reliable, and it's certainly slower than the Yugo. Most of this can be attributed to the 3 speed automatic transmission (I think an A440? I gave the car away for free a while ago, so I don't remember what transmission was in it anymore, but it was a column shift hydraulic 3 speed automatic.)

I enjoyed this mini series on this old Plymouth Reliant. These cars were never what you would call desirable cars for anyone under about age 50. They are cars everyone just loves to hate. Whether they have any good reason to or not.
They sold a ton of these, and they did what they were supposed to do. They sold and brought badly needed revenue into Chrysler. And were the spring board to a lot of cars that also were surprisingly big hits.
    They have there issues.
But step back and look at what you have here.
    1) a light weight car weighing in around 2700 pounds.
    2) 4 people fit in it. 5 or 6 in a pinch.
    3) it was not uncommon to see 30+ mpg out of these.
    4) They came with rack and pinion steering. A pretty new feature at the time for domestic cars.
    5) they were affordable.
    6) the interiors actually held up quite well for a cheap car.
    7) the Chrysler versions of these cars offered turbos. That boosted power from about 85/90 hp to 130/135 hp. A substantial improvement.
    8) these actually had decent clean styling for the time. Not swoopy or sporty but clean and properly conservative style appropriate to a small sedan.
You stick 175 to 200 hp in one of these and they become quite the pocket rocket. (Remember, only 2700 pounds!)
Remember, there were a whole bunch of parts bin upgrades you could do to these cars, because for about 10 plus years, every K-car derivative go fast option you could bolt onto these little puppies. And there were a LOT of those parts scattered around the product lineup. (Shelby Omni GLH-S, Shelby Chargers or Daytona Shelby and Chrysler GTS turbos?
There were a number of road course racing where Chrysler was sponsoring these front driver cars, mostly Omni Chargers, where these cars were quite competitive.

I'm glad you enjoyed the series, sadly the car needed too much work and was mostly just in the way, so I wound up giving it away after the exhaust fell off it. Cars like this in my ownership always stay as close to stock as I can keep them, I would never consider a performance upgrade.

I've owned so many K cars, they're great but you must know they're quirks, both starting cold (pedal to the floor, hold a few seconds, start without gas.... etc same with working on em. Gotta be one with them! First car I ever drove, worked on (YES, A FWD) Love em or hate em, they're great cars, just ask Red Green (lol) I had that sucker pretty much diagnosed at the start (Although you obviously couldn't hear me, Sorry for the colorful obscenities, lol!) I want a 2.6 Wagon, they actually lay rubber and perform well, oil leaks aside😊

Love it bro! Saw the short you made of the cold start and I knew I needed more! I get crap all the time for liking these K cars but I've always wanted one...especially a couple...I also love the shadow/sundace, dad had a base model Sundance years ago and ran thr piss out of it. Got 50 mpg on a couple of occasions, mileage that new non hybrid cars couldn't TOUCH.

@@kcarman88 If the carb comes off for any reason, it will either be a fuel injection mod or the car is being parted out. I absolutely despise carburetors of all kinds. Once this one starts fighting back, either it goes or the car goes.
