- Hi everyone! In this video I talk about why I left consulting. I have a previous video where I talked about why you shouldn't join consulting (cons of consulting) but I also wanted to talk about some other personal reasons of mine of why I wanted to exit and make the transition to tech.
So here I talk about the bad work life balance, rank pulling, unfair promotion system, lack of continuity and specialty in projects and also some other person reasons (wanting career growth as a software engineer and salary).
Hope this is helpful!

🌊 Hi everyone! I'm Mika Kim and I'm currently a senior software engineer at a FAANG company! In my prior life I used to be a consultant at Deloitte. I created this youtube channel t share my experiences from the tech industry, and consulting. I used to and still use youtube a LOT to gain info on fields of interests and I hope these videos do the same for you too! 😊 - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
I stumbled across a few of your videos today. I have to say that your honesty and information about consulting were totally on point. I've been out of consulting for nearly 20 years, but I guess things haven't changed much. I had flashbacks (both good and bad). If you work for one of the big four, the odds are very high that you will burnout in 2 to 3 years or commit for life. When I started talking to the lifers and learned what they sacrificed personally along the way, I knew I was not going to be one of them. I started consulting at a big four firm and left for a boutique consultancy. For me, it was a much better balance (more money, less politics, etc.), but after another 5 years, I burned out for good. I wouldn't trade my consulting experiences for anything, but when I left, it was for good. Thank you for sharing your experiences; you give great insights for anyone looking to enter or exit consulting.
Thanks Mika......really appreciate it 👍
Thank you for sharing your experience ❤❤❤
Hi, love your content! Can you tell us where do you work now that you are in tech?
Thank you Mika for giving honest opinion about consulting during my studies I always think why these MBAs are get paid alot . I got the reason for that nothing is free in this world everything you have to pay in return😢😢😢😢
Thanks for sharing your thoughts; I really appreciate it. As a Computer Science senior, I'm exploring my career options in Software Engineering and Consulting, and I've been quite indecisive about which path to choose. Your input was helpful. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how rewarding Software Engineering is compared to consulting?
Welcome back Mika!💜
Thank you for waiting!! 🫶
I would like to see a video about what questions to ask to see what the work culture is like.
I am currently applying for jobs, some of which are indeed consulting jobs, and today I got the impression there was an attempt to trick me into believing their work/life balance was fine ( I never got direct answers to my questions on these topics).
I would greatly appreciate it, because I am starting to get tired of being excited for an interview, only to ''play detective'' after all.
P.S.
I'm from The Netherlands :)
Normally I like to ask things like what are your team values, how does your team handle priorities etc! I’ll try to make a video about that soon :) good luck!!!
13:02 this reminds me Korean work culture haha 🤣
Kudos to you for the smart career switch, I wonder one day maybe you'll get tired of being an employee and start your own tech business😜
Great to see you again Mika!! Are you gonna upload vidoes more often?
That’s the plan!! 🤞
@@MikaKim Great news. I love listening to you!!
What qualifications did you need to get into tech? Any advice on how to get into it?
Welcome back 🤗 we missed you!
Question - would you recommend entering consulting for the first time later in your career, after doing some years in ‘industry’?
I think earlier in your career is a good time to start because you get to try out different type of work and in different industries and see what you really like!
You're a life saver
7:02 is sooo true omg I felt like I was the crazy one for not wanting to do it
May I ask how often clients ask you things to lightly sautee the books?
I seen all your videoes! But what does even "tech" mean in your title? Is it like an IT-manager, are you a programmer, its hard to know for many people I would suppose (Im currently a uni student). Looking forward to more videos with honest talk like this 😎
When I mean tech I just mean generically switching industries to tech, but I’m specifically a software engineer
I am working at Deloitte I agree with you.😢😢😢😢 so stressful 😫 so much fed up here
Consulting is a nightmare.
Software is another...
If you don't mind me asking, what did you get your bachelors degree in?
What type of consulting is this -- Business Consulting (like Mckinsey, Bain, etc..) ? Tech consulting like TCS, Capgemini ? or Financial Consulting ??
yeah! quality over quantity is exactly the reason that got me into music industry. People don't care how much time you put into work, they only care if the music sounds good or not 🤣
I moved from being a DE to a Big4 consultant and honestly, I have no idea what I'm doing there...I do ppt slide everyday and copy them into Excel tab - so boring.
next video: why i left tech! :D
Were you not paid very well in consulting for all the hours that you had to put in?
The salary itself was decent for a new grad, but given the hours I put in if you calculate the salary into hours it was not that much 🫨
i see that you are successful women ..really. but why you left consulting .. i need money and consulting is good income .. i'm from Tunisia and have family .. i must work online .. i not have solutions yet ... OMG.
Hi Karim, where do you find online missions from Tunisia?

What did you major in?
Math!
KBBQ and extra work.
💪💪💪
