Example Of What Is Meant By Crazy Or Freakish Muscle Insertions

  • A controversial video in which Jason Blaha explains how differences in muscle insertions and muscle bellies can make bodybuilders of similar sizes and lean body mass look larger and smaller than each other. When it comes to aesthetics, many visual artists already know and take advantage of ideal proportions and size relationships within the human frame. Symmetry, overall shape and development of the musculature, relative size and proportions of the skeletal structure, affect how one judges the attractiveness and fitness of each contestant on stage in physique and bodybuilding competitions. Some people have a few genetic gifts for overall proportion and symmetry without having any particular distinguishing attributes when it comes to the fullness and roundness of perfectly balanced musculature. Others may have impressively developed and well-placed muscle insertions in the biceps or calves yet struggle to develop an impressive back, or a be genetically gifted with a strong full back, but also have extremely slow growing shoulders and legs. Jason goes over photos of various physiques, showing just how much being genetically gifted can really set you apart from the rest of the crowd (all things being equal such as: training and intensity levels, height, weight, diet, and lean body mass). One thing that really frustrates me is that if you mentioned insertions and how genetics are so important in bodybuilding/recreational bodybuilding, a high proportion of gym goers or bros would probably have no idea and just say you're not working hard enough. I suffer from measly bicep insertions like yourself Jason, and nothing can change that. This is part of the reason I despise the fitness industry now. Full of false hope.

      Tom Kerby I'm 6'4" and I have really short muscle insertions. My lats are shoved all the way up under my armpits and my biceps look like little tennis balls that are attached to my deltoids. As far as you're concerned, I have no arms because my tris sit so high up, they don't even make it out of the bottom of a short shirt sleeve and are non-visible. The bottom half of my upper legs don't even look like they have muscle because the muscle all sits right below my hips in my upper thigh and ass. I will never have a very full back because most of the muscle sits very high, paired with high lats and a skinny waist. It sucks because my extremities make me look skinny while all my muscle bunches up at the joints and doesn't fill out very much past that. I will never look like a traditional bodybuilder and will always probably resemble one of those 90's Image comic book characters with a skinny waist and ridiculous proportions in the shoulder & upper leg area. But the point is, it's bodybuilding and you don't have to build a proportional body, you just have to build the body you want. So even though my lats sit up right under my armpits and will never grow vary far down to give me a certain "thickness", I can at least grow them and my shoulders out to give myself a "width" that will always stand out because I have a skinny waist. So even though my quads will never pop out of my pants, I can at least grow a huge ass to fill them out. I've tossed aside the conventional notion of bodybuilding being about getting as big as possible and more about building yourself into something you're proud to see.

      Here where you are wrong buddy
      About your lats Is not quiet accurate
      What you have under your armpit is the insertion of the lats not the origin
      In fact the latismus Dorsi muscle has the widest origin of all your back muscle it take origin from 5 diffrent places and the tendon where it insert is really small so there is no such thing as very high lats because of this

    Also small joints/bone structure plays a huge roll on how you look. A guy with a 14" forearm and a 6" wrist is going to look MUCH bigger than a guy with a 15" forearm and an 8" wrist. Even though the second guy has a higher FFMI. That also plays a huge roll in what constitutes as "good genetics".

    would having really amazing bodybuilding insertions be less advantageous in powerlifting or sports? because you would be carrying more muscle per muscle cross sectional area due to muscle being longer. Or does having lower insertions generally make some lifts more biomechanically advantageous i powerlifting due to moment arms being shortened.

Being an athlete is whole another thing than being a coach! This dude may have a lot of knowledge, having six packs doesn't make you a zen about finess, it just indicates that you have a low body fat and maybe that person don't even know to work out but extremely lucky about genetics. Is a muscle with an exceptionally long belly stronger or weaker than a short-bellied muscle-all else being equal?
    What about flexibility potential?
    .....RVM45

    • @filipkunc9606
      @filipkunc9606 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      All else being equal the muscle with the greater cross section area is going to be stronger, in other words "thickness" determines how much you can lift in a slow and controlled fashion. On the other hand the muscle with the longer belly will be able to shorten faster, which will allow it to develop more dynamic power (throw things faster, run faster, jump higher, etc.).
      Unfortunately, usually a longer muscle belly will also be able to grow thicker than a shorter muscle belly, so longer muscles are most often superior in terms of overall athletic performance, however there are many other factors which have major influence here -type 1 to type 2 muscle fiber ratio, tendon insertions and origins, neural efficiency and probably a few others I'm not aware of...

    • @StarduskLP
      @StarduskLP 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Filip Kunc I am hardly an expert but doesn't the neural efficiency have as much an influence on strength as these other factors, if not more?

      FlyFlippage Relax, no need to get butthurt. What Jason is talking about has little to do with insertions and origins and almost everything to do with the shapes and sizes of muscle bellies. When he points to his arm, where his biceps belly ends and refers to it as the insertion, he is wrong. Plain and simple. What he is pointing to is the end of his muscle belly, the actual insertion is on the radius, whether it's half an inch farther or closer to the elbow is largely irrelevant to what he is talking about. Likewise when he speaks about his "insertion" near the shoulder he is doubly wrong, because biceps has it's origins on that end, not insertions and they aren't even at the top of his shoulder, but on the clavicle and the scapula. I'm not quite sure why you wrote your essay about natural variability as I have not implied it doesn't exist.
      As you have surely noticed, pointing that out makes me sound like a pedantic asshole, which is not my intention, hence the little disclaimer I wrote. I like this channel, which is why I am subscribed to it.
      As for all the other things you said, I'm not sure how they address anything I've said about force generation. Longer muscles tend to move the limbs they are attached to faster than shorter ones, everything else being equal. Muscles with insertions and origins farther away from the joints tend to have better leverage, and people with naturally higher neural drive are able to contract a slightly larger number of motor units at once, thus being stronger. Is any of that incorrect?
      Oh, and what exactly is wrong with looking things up on Wikipedia? Are you implying that if I want to learn something about, for example, anatomy I must take a university course in anatomy? That is pretty igrnorant.

    • @filipkunc9606
      @filipkunc9606 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      FlyFlippage
      There is a comment here by user Malukaluna:
      'do "good" muscle insertions correlate with a higher strength potential?'
      Because Jason didn't use the term "insertions" correctly, I'm not quite sure if Malukaluna means "long muscle bellies" or "muscle insertion points that give superior leverage" when he says ' "good" muscle insertions'. Now you see why I got so anal about using anatomical terms correctly in an educational video about human anatomy.

  • @TheAspiringOne

    I think another important factor is how your body retains water, stores fat, and reacts to stimulation. If your muscles hold water easily- it's more common they will look "fuller". If your body tends to store muscle on your arms, or stomach, shoulders (any place that might affect how it "looks") you might have 17" arms that look smaller than some other guys ripped/veiny 15.5" arms. By stimulation I mean how well your muscle flexes. If you have a good mind-muscle connection it's easier to "hard flex" which makes the muscle look even nastier. Just my opinion. Loved the video!

    • @JasonBlaha
      @JasonBlaha  10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tazo the natty pro if he is on steroids has as much muscle as Serge unless you are convinced Serge is much leaner. They are the same height with the same contest weight. There are MORE drugs available today that can pass through the drug testing of natty shows than even existed in Serge's day... not saying Serge didn't use buckets of deca and primo but keep in mind natty bodybuilders today have access to a larger variety of drugs than the untested pros did back in the 70s.

    • @alib6936
      @alib6936 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      JuggernautFitnessTV so just because they are the same height and weight.. that means they have the same amount of muscle? your fucking kidding right?

    • @TehTaZo
      @TehTaZo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +JuggernautFitnessTV The natty pro is not 6% bodyfat. Closer to 8%. Considering that Alberto Nunez got measured at 6.2 (I know that there are flaws in DEXA scans, but still gives an idea). Serge is close to 5-6% in that picture and is holding less water. Lets say the pro has about 2 lbs of water. Serge also is in better lighting and has access to drugs that make him look bigger than he is. All things considered serge could have an easy 7-8 lbs of muscle on the natty pro which could easily look like much more than that with drugs. Is m not saying that he doesn't have much better insertions than the guy on the right, he most certainly does, but this comparison is very flawed. Just because someone has the same weight and height DOESN'T mean the same amount of muscle. With bone structure, water retention, lighting, bodyfat estimations, bone density, organ size, etc. there is no way to truly know if these guys have the same amount of muscle just from those 2 numbers. Obviously serge has better insertions, but there are more factors than you are giving credit to. Insertions can make you look much better than the next guy, but this example is a vast exaggeration of that difference.
      Also a side note: I have no idea who the natty pro is, but judging by that picture ALONE, kid say that that physique is achievable naturally.I think the FFMI that Jason gave is to high. Because he underestimated the fat that the guy had.

    • @filipkunc9606

      I think you're right about them having roughly the same amount of total muscle, but I think they do carry their weight a little differently, which greatly enhances the illusion of big size difference between.
      Sergio has the waist of an 8 year old boy, which surely allows him to carry more muscle around his shoulders and still have the same weight and muscle mass as someone who has wider hips and bigger torso.
      Sergio clearly has a lot more muscle in his chest, but that is, as you have pointed out in your video, due to his superior muscle belly in his chest.

  • @ghastpie

    so is it genetics or drugs that give you that look? you said Rob riches' full look came from drugs in your recent how to spot a fake natty video.

    • @theek2008100
      @theek2008100 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ghastpie the look he´s talking about in this video depends on one´s genetics purely, as he said. it depends on the muscle insertions which you can't change. rob riches is a different topic. he´s talking about looking full while being very lean, if you're natty and you get that lean you look depleted you're muscles are flat. he´s using the term "looking full" for two completely different things. one is about the muscle looking full, so not flat which normally happens when you cut - which can be attained with drugs. and in this one he´s talking about the actually muscle fibers that give the muscle a more full more round look. it´s two different things

    build up of scar tissue in your lower bicep ?? very inconsistent lump, scar tissue from the site injections?

    • @JasonBlaha
      @JasonBlaha  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      AllAboutTheOak I've already said this publically. Yeah I have some scar tissue from 1cc test/eq injections. So kind of makes you feel bad for the guys doing 3cc of synthol twice a week in smaller muscles, they are going to have some MASSIVE scar tissue in 5-10 years. I have scar tissue form 1cc anabolic injections done once a week or once every 2 weeks from over 10 years ago still there. LoL

    • @AllAboutTheOak
      @AllAboutTheOak 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JuggernautFitnessTV OK, i missed that. I wouldn't worry about it though, only noticeable to people who are looking for it. Would injecting the upper/mid bicep be an option? or is that ill-advised.

    couldn't it be problems with structural-integrity sort to speak? like for example a few weeks ago I went to a chiro and took x-rays for my neck and shoulders because I had horrible pain and limitation to my ROM. He showed me that I had a forward head issue (lack of curve in the neck portion of the spine) and even since I started the rehab I look better and my poses look better even after almost 9 weeks of no heavy lifting. What you are saying makes a lot of sense to me but I'm hoping that it's not the case with me. Thanks for the good info

    Random question I got my elbow tendonitis back. I was fine for about 6 months after a cortisone shot and physical therapy. I have even rested for months and only did about 40% my max rep. but I don't think resting helps at all. Maybe get another cortisone shot?

    The "long" biceps has its own advantages. Your arms just look overal larger than those of guys with short bicep when you are not flexing which is like 99.99999% of your time, you have easier time to gain some mass to them.

  • @neilh9768
    @neilh9768 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sorry to say Jason but in this vid you are over 25% bf. Anyone that has never actually gone sub 10% will always underestimates their bf... always. Cause until you go sub 10% (and Im not saying you should or must in any way) you wont really be aware of just how much fat you are actually holding.
    The fat that is stored intra-muscle is substantial at your level. Like when you buy a steak and there is all that fat marbling all through the meat... that is the fat that is hiding in your actual muscles. You cant really see it, it just looks like solid muscle with a layer of fat over it, but the truth is there is fat marbling in your muscles AND a layer of fat over your muscles.
    When a guy cuts down sub 10% it looks like he loses muscle mass and certainly in some cases where the cut is not performed correctly, he does. But when the cut is done correctly, the guys muscle bellies will still shrink (natty) even though the actual amount of muscle has not changed... just the glycogen stores and fat marbling within the muscle are low.

    • @boogahed
