Furby Mechanical Teardown - Nightmare Fuel....

  • I knew there had to be some good mechanisms inside there! In this video I take apart everyone's nightmare fuel.....Furby. I think it's hugely important to stand on the shoulders of the engineers and designers that came before you, and that includes looking at their designs and adapting them to your projects. Not every breakthrough is an entirely new idea, in fact most are combinations of existing technology in a new industry. So check this video out and build up your mental toolbox!

Actually I feel like this help demystify Furby and make it less creepy. There are a lot of sophisticated and tightly packed mechanisms in that thing-I am impressed!

I'm really impressed that they were able to pack all these different movements (eyes back and forth, blinking, talking, smile/frown, moving eyebrows, moving the ears, and moving the feet) with just a single motor. 7 or 8 different animated parts, which all have the illusion of being independent of one another, on one motor. Some really great engineering behind these. If you would have asked me prior to seeing this teardown how these worked, I definitely would have guessed that it used many different servos.

@@thoughtbombdesign The 2023 Furbies have physical eyes again but all they do is blink and I dont like how they look. I actually like the digital eyes on the 2012s to Connects, they're so expressive and fun to look at with many different animations. But I like the idea of physical ones moving around in different directions too, so it's sad all the 2023 Furby eyes do is blink.

great video! Guess they don't get demon possessed after all? ;)
So what did the long red and black wires go to on the opposed end from where they were glued? I didn't see you mention that in the video? What was point of them leaving the wires long and wrapping them up in the case? Programing or maybe power while being quality checked? Just seems odd to leave those there like that instead of just clipping them off short if not needed or fully desoldering them from the board...

Really have to wonder how they made money on these. Look how many custom pieces had to be manufactured. Even the way they did it is weird. Look at how many different types of plastic were used. It looks like ABS, nylon, HDPE, delrin, and there appears to be a rod made out of polycarbonate or acrylic. There would've been fitment issues which means several mold iterations were likely needed on some parts. The fur coat and PCB would also have been custom made just for the Furby line. This item may have required output from at least 3-5 factories (excluding the generic hardware). It would've been received final assembly in a factory with fairly tight quality requirements. So the initial production cost was high, and the production cost for each individual would've been significant. It's hard to see how they could've made much profit.
