If Gunther had been standing there holding that belt when Roman Reigns and the Rock called it a consolation prize it wouldn't have had the same effect as it did with Seth. It did nothing to kill Gunther's momentum. He won the KOTR tournament, and then just got through winning the WHC. Just because things didn't go according to your fantasy booking(which btw, makes no sense), it doesn't mean Gunther's momentum was killed. He did just fine between now and dropping the IC title. The only real hiccup he experienced was at KOTR.
