Love this guy. The idea for me is that he's not the traditional heel. It's more that he knows how much better than everyone else he is and he's not scared to tell people. I prefer that than the usual bad guy beatdowns for the sake of it. He shows respect to the babyfaces when they deserve it which makes his heel-ness even more realistic and believable. Big fan - should've been champ forever!
I second both of your statements. I think he will win and I think hhh is smart enough to know it's a career booster but every winner doesn't have to act like a king or a clown.
Baby face champions become extremely boring, after they finish their story. Hence, I would love to see Gunther become the universal champ. Then, make everyone else climb right back up that mountain without every single match ending in faction role-play involvement or disqualifications. Just a straight up boss of a champion. No "Yeets!" No Bloodline/NWO/DX, etc. Rather, just Gunther whoopin' that ass like only he can.
Gunther is the best wrestler in WWE right now. The best heel work, funny, you can't even hate him as a heel because he is that good. Puts in the work and shows us new moves mixed with a blend of old school. Perfection at its best. Thank you, Gunther. and Paul L.
Sorry to keep bugging but also remember when Randy Orton was playing the bad guy role and he was feuding with Cena and he would just hold that headlock for ages... As soon as he grabbed a headlock people would start booing and he would just hold it and stare at everyone the matches were so boring.. that's because the people in the back were telling Randy that he was too good in the ring and that's why he was not getting the boo he was trying to get
Some people end up in the HOF because, time, nostalgia, or just pure dumb luck of being around so long, but others are destined for HOF the moment you see them on pure work ethic and professionalism alone. Gunther is one of them
What’s crazy to me is Gunther seems like the EXACTLY the type of Villain you’d think Vince would be looking for. Like what quality does he NOT have that you’d want in a Heel?

This Appalachian gal loves GUNTHER. He is my favorite wrestler and I was lucky to have seen him vs Zayn back in November at a house show and it was incredible to witness. Can't wait until the big title is on his waist. He is the best wrestler in the world.
I do not blame him at all. At first, Vince's plan was to call him up, burying him, and send him back to NXT. So glad that Vince is gone forever. Triple H made Gunther the man that he is. The Longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in history, having 5-star matches with Drew and Sheamus, and others with Chad Gable and Ricochet. Despite him being a heel on screen, he is very humble off screen.
Then you were never a wwe fan to begin with if you hate vince. Vince gave you the undertaker, kane, big show, warrior, mankind, the heart foundation, LOD, demolition, sid vicious, bobby heenan, pappa shango, JYD, rody piper etc... every character you can think of that he could sell the shit out of he gave you. He also gave you hell in a cell, summer slam, last man standing, first blood matches, bullwhip matches, one handed blind fold matches and more that people enjoyed. You dont see that anymore do you. The old guard all have said entertainment wise HHH is a DUD. Hes boring and has nothing creative to offer the wwe. Will the wwe survive just showcasing wrestling? Absolutely not.
I mean, Vince also gave us a number of cringe-worthy storyline based on the idea that "Vince fucks the female talent", the Baron Corbin dog food fiasco, Hornswaggle as Vince's son, the frequent burying of anyone and everyone just because Vince took a disliking to them, and let's not forget the whole Katie Vick thing... Yep, Vince was so great 😂
Gunther talking about his career years from now just gets me so happy. Him not having any plans to leave and knowing hes happy where hes at. One of my favorite
I heard on a wrestling podcast (can’t remember which one) that Vince wanted to bury Gunther and send him back to NXT, but I’m glad he’s on the main roster under Triple H.
I think the best part of Gunther as a heel is his subtlety. He holds himself to a higher standard and casually looks down on others who he believes are beneath him.
You can tell that he is a STUDENT of Wrestling! I can see him being FANTASTIC if he chooses to take on any role backstage after he's finished his Hall of Fame Career.
Vince was too egotistical to get out of his own way. For decades people said that man’s narcissistic personality was running rampant & unchecked. He was ruining his own product & he didn’t even care
This right here. I don't think he didn't care though, he did in his own way, but he was so egotistical that because of that, he couldn't ever see how out of touch he was
@@jameshami5314 he had no real competition. Everyone that came along floundered. He bought the biggest threat he ever had. TNA had a solid going but then it started getting mis-managed. Going to say something that might be interpreted as silly. Walter/Gunther could very easily be one of the top two babyfaces in the company if they handle things correctly over the next three or four years. He has never leaned into the lazy gimmicks, but his fundamental thing is that he is a phenomenally good wrestler who wants to be the absolute best in the world. He doesn't come out and say "Chicago, so full of drug addicts. or Indianapolis, where everyone smells bad and is fat." That shit is cheap heat, and it works to get a quick pop, but only now when the crowd is smart and plays their part. It works for the Miz specifically because fans like him and want him to get boo'd, so they boo him. Every single great heel makes an even greater babyface, once the see the error of their ways. With the only exception being the Rick Rudes and Ric Flairs of the world who are heels because of their lifestyle, but not their desire to be the best. If Walter was rolling around in $6,000 suits and flying charter everywhere...then he's locked in. But he's a tough, but smart guy who... in storyline terms... is simply misguided in how you become the best. He feels the need to push people around and never show vulnerability and weakness. As a babyface, he is not ever going to be a Steve Austin or even a Eddie Gilbert(at his best), where he's just some badass antihero. His fundamental core is that he absolutely gives a shit about wrestling. I see him as a guy that despite being an absolute asshole, right now, never feels the need to cheat or influence the odds in his way. When he loses it's "fair". Do not dilute his character through interferences or politicking, but let it ride and let his frustration build when effort alone doesn't make his dream come true. Imaginary booking time... Two years down the road, maybe one... He wins the rumble and gets to challenge Reigns, or whoever is the champion... but it must be a heel champion with the full support of "the powers that be". Gunther's stable are still heels, ala the Wyatts. He has a few feuds between the rumble and mania where they slowly start to get cheered as the great hope, once again ala Rusev. You don't force it at all, you lean into it though. The entire heel faction that he's leading become babyfaces by default over time. Because they are the bad guys that don't cheat or lie... they're just "GOOD AT WRESTLING". He doesn't see the "error of his ways" vocally before wrestlemania because that could kill his momentum, but his style does change a bit where he's wrestling less heel and more babyface. Biggest thing is maybe a wave to the crowd or a slight smile when he gets cheered in some city that loves a tough guy hero... thinking Philly or Chicago. Little cracks in the facade, but not a full break. At Mania, they try to screw him... but DO NOT overbook it. It's like a one off psuedo-run in. They never make it to the ring and his boy gets a pop shutting it down. You just made a future star doing that too, perhaps. Do not do the "here comes the entire NWO and Degeneration X" thing. One single attempt, it gets shut down and in that moment cheating backfires and Walter dominates that moment, hit his finish... gets the guy up and hits it again for a clean 1, 2, 3. And, if he can, Walter sheds a tear or the closest thing to it. Holds the world title up high, grabs the microphone, says no more than two lines... something like "thank you" and walks off as the world champion. You do not technically turn him until Raw on Monday. The promo is not apologizing for being a "bad guy" or "i realized I was wrong". The fans are not stupid, and in wrestling we show we do not tell. His hard work paid off, that's all they need to see.
The absolute authenticity of this man and how much pride he takes in his craft to admit that despite being offered to move to America, he didn’t want to because he didn’t like the way the production was (Vince regime). Just gained even more respect for Gunther
Gunther’s one of my favorites. His stiff believable style is top notch IMO. You don’t see him doing moonsaults or knocking down 5 men like bowling pins. His matches with Ilja I can go back and watch time and time again
Gunther (WALTER) is a throwback to the 1960s/black & white picture Era of wrestling when wrestlers looked like wrestlers and didn’t need characters to get over as long as they could wrestle.
I really hope to see Ilja and Gunther work on the main roster. Their matches in NXT UK were some of the best wrestling storytelling I've ever seen. Just tremendous work from both of them.
I love how nice these guys actually are in real life. I noticed that with Rhea. She is a real sweetheart for sure. Gunter seems so chill and cool. It must be hard for them to be heels. Very good actors.
What makes Gunthers matches different is how they end. He can win with a Boston Crab, Powerbomb, Clothesline, Splash etc. He doesn't have a end all be all finisher. Makes matches exciting because you just never know what's going to put his opponent away.
Such an amazing Wrestler, someone that can have a fantastic match against any other style of wrestler. He always looks himself while adapting to different styles. Guarenteed future top champion.
Gunthers methodical, old school style is a perfect counter to the faster, more athletic generation of top faces. I cannot wait until he steps in as the top heel when Reigns needs to be refreshed.
Depending on how long WWE plans to let Cody remain Undisputed champ I personally would LOVE to see Cody v. Gunther headlining a WM or another major PLE. That feud and storylines would feed families, especially if they up the savagery within Gunthers character against Cody throughout the storyline leading up to the final match for the title .
Man... With the Sad news of John Klinger passing away and him, Ilja and Gunther having one of the best matches i've ever seen in wxw... I would looove a tribute to that soon...
There is no heel or face when it comes to Gunther. He is in that category of his own like Orton when he was a heel. You can't help but to cheer him on. He has a bright future and already a legend in the making run this far.
If we're talking best current wrestler in-ring. For me, that definitely goes to Gunther much more than Ospreay. I am still amazed by the athleticism, intensity, and execution of Ospreay but I much prefer and value the timelessness of Gunther's quality over quantity style and use of classics with just enough meaningful innovation.
A man in honor does not wait for his enemy to hit the rock bottom to speak what's in his heart, everyone suddenly has something negative to say about Vince. Would like to thank the Undertaker for sticking with Vince, he was not a good person to others I admit but loyalty means more. Guys like CM Punk, Enzo, Ryback and Dean are one of the most honest people cause they let everyone know they hated Vince while he was still biting, these ones who show up out of nowhere are nothing but corwards!!!
What an ungrateful marks these wrestlers today showing no respect what so ever to the man who wrote their paycheck all these years respect for John Cena for sticking up for Vince I'm not on neither side but i won't act all tough all the sudden on someone already knocked down
I'd love to see Ilja get his feet under him on the main roster before joining Imperium. Gunther goes after the world title, Ilja gets the Intercontinental. Gunther fails to get the big belt while Ilja is doing everything Gunther was doing with the IC title just as well if not better which irritates him, gets Kaiser to turn on him, costing him the belt. Ilja gets the big belt. Wrestlemania, Ilja soaks up endless damage from Gunther, give them lots of time to really go at it before finally Ilja just can't get up. Gunther wins in the most brutal wrestlemania match ever, which is a fitting way for him to finally get the top belt.
This man saved the IC title. He made it important again, made it worth chasing for. Us fans can´t thank Gunther enough for that and I hope he now goes on to chase for a bigger title himself and get it in time.
Love this guy. The perfect wrestler because he mixes and matches the old school with the new style of wrestling. My dream match is Gunther vs Bret Hart.
@@TaylorSwenson Bret is a cripple that can't wrestle over the idea that Vince paid him to leave just to get kicked in the face and sold his morals and shit on his brothers legacy for a quick paycheck.
IMO, Gunther is a better speaker than wrestler. I can't fathom why he is allowed to shoot beat the shit out of people, and because of that people think he is a great wrestler. Why is he allowed to stiff everybody? That's his whole gimmick. Anyone would get over if they were actually chopping the shit out of people, while the other guy kayfabe fights back.
Vince was off is hinges, but let’s not forget, he gave Gunther his name title, he brought Cody back personally, He knew Roman was the biggest thing ever (just ahead of his time) I remember people use to say how much Vince hated Cesaro and never gave him a chance he left WWE and still didn’t get over! Vince left some bad ass seeds planted ! - with that said the overall business is much better with Triple H!
I can't tell if Ilja will become part of Imperium, or feud with them. They just booted Giovanni, kinda rough having a two person stable. At the same time, having a Russian in a German stable might be a little weird... I guess they stopped feuding 80 years ago, so maybe they can work together lol.
Gable should ditch his crew of misfits and join up with imperium. His technical style fits well in that group and him joining the man who ultimately turned him heel would be great storytelling.
I'm very against this idea of Ilja joining Imperium. If you watched NXT UK back then it just doesn't make sense story-wise. They are better of as rivals.
I’m glad finally someone who stepped up to say “I don’t like Vince” he made WWE look like a circus clown act every week … doesn’t matter if crowd still goes or sold out … it was pure comedy that made me turn away from WWE…. Until Triple H showed up… 🔥🤘🏽💯
And Brock should destroy Gunther and Brock should no sell all of Gunther’s chops cause they are horrible and Brock has taken worse than anything Gunther could do to him
Lot of people remember Gunther for the 5-star matches. One I'll never forget is the exhibition match with Dominik Mysterio (because let's face it, that's what it was...no way was Dom beating Gunther), and Gunther was just strolling to the ring grinning like, "I'm 'bout to ruin this MFer's night". 😂😂😂 And did he ever!
Gunther's character even as a heel is cool. He's one of those bad guys you have no choice but to respect. Like the main antagonist from Gangs of New York 😂
#1 in pro wrestling at the moment .... incredibly uniquely talented as an all-around entertainer .... never makes a mistake ... literally every match gets the 'this is awesome!' chant ... and most importantly, the guy is easy to respect ... there is zero corny aspect to him .... that quality is very rare
WALTER/GUNTHER Aura under Vince’s watch would had gotten ruined to the point of no return so I’m very happy he stayed away for as long as he did! I really worried once he decided to go ahead and give the main roster a try because Vince was still booking it and although he put the IC title on him and Vince probably got bored fast and decided to bury him! So he did the right thing I don’t blame him for not wanting to be there then! Gunther is such a throw back you think Vince would had enjoyed him but nope not Vince he probably lost touch with that as well! So it all worked out except for him losing that classic of a theme he had everywhere he went til NXT UK ended! Now we have Mone thinking she can remix it and ruined such a classic masterpiece of a tone! I wish he got it back that made his representation so good!
I honestly wouldn't mind Gunther being the universesal champion. However, I also know that it will never happen because the WWE already invested way, way, way too much time and money into Cody, for years.
Gunther should be the guy to dethrone Cody. Beating Cody will immediately make him the Top Heel in the Company maybe after the Cody vs Rock feud is done.

Also - I hope he wins KOTR but they don't slap him with the King Gunther gimmick.

This Appalachian gal loves GUNTHER. He is my favorite wrestler and I was lucky to have seen him vs Zayn back in November at a house show and it was incredible to witness. Can't wait until the big title is on his waist. He is the best wrestler in the world.
Yeah baby i think so too moreover iam the fan of Gunther specially the way he conduct himself
Gunther would've been the perfect guy to retire Kurt Angle.
So true
Just imagine if we could go back in time prime Kurt vs the general....
Ring of Honor never tried to get out of it's region. And AEW.. had potential, still has potential but the management needs to change for it to even have a chance.
I love Gunther's down to earth personality, and I wish him all the best going forward.
My model for his turn is, specifically, is Nikita Koloff.
Difference is, Walter can talk. Nikita could only go as far as Dusty could carry him.
The absolute authenticity of this man and how much pride he takes in his craft to admit that despite being offered to move to America, he didn’t want to because he didn’t like the way the production was (Vince regime). Just gained even more respect for Gunther
I hate that Vince tried to diminish so many legacies because he wanted to elevate his creations
I see that Stone Island polo shirt and always on that clean sidepart and fade cut. A wrestling machine that's stylish, Gunther is a star.
Vince literally made it his mission to bury Gunther. Thank god that wasn't the case

In 32 years I'd say this man is the most realistic wrestler I've ever seen. Every match feels like a sport.
I really hope to see Ilja and Gunther work on the main roster. Their matches in NXT UK were some of the best wrestling storytelling I've ever seen. Just tremendous work from both of them.
Gunther seems like a great guy (high contrast with his character) and a solid interviewee.
Translation: Gunther didn’t want to end up as the former heel turned dancing foreigner (ie Khali, Suzuki, Kozlove). Love that he got to do it his way!
Gunther is the only heel in pro wrestling who wins ALL of his matches clean. Hes such a welcome breath of fresh air
He legit just had a match where Ludwig Kaiser interfered
I appreciate his honesty in this interview
Such an amazing Wrestler, someone that can have a fantastic match against any other style of wrestler. He always looks himself while adapting to different styles. Guarenteed future top champion.
Gunthers methodical, old school style is a perfect counter to the faster, more athletic generation of top faces. I cannot wait until he steps in as the top heel when Reigns needs to be refreshed.

Gunther is my kind of wrestler. No nonsense. I hated Vince's product too.

Gunther is a very serious man...in a good way
Depending on how long WWE plans to let Cody remain Undisputed champ I personally would LOVE to see Cody v.
Good for him expressing his disdain for the V regime.
Enjoyed his reign. Got to see a classic match between him and Nakemura on Smackdown two years ago and witness is his debut on Raw.
I’d be interested in seeing this.
What I like most is that he brought relevance back to the IC title. I have missed that most. We need that for all the belts.
This man saved the IC title. He made it important again, made it worth chasing for. Us fans can´t thank Gunther enough for that and I hope he now goes on to chase for a bigger title himself and get it in time.

Why is he allowed to stiff everybody? That's his whole gimmick. Anyone would get over if they were actually chopping the shit out of people, while the other guy kayfabe fights back.
