"Maintain control sir. Fly the plane." It may seem pointless, but a friendly voice on the radio is great for preventing panic from seizing you.

      @geekytraveler5899 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

@robert1340, You won't believe how emergency situations and fear can make people even to forget the most obvious things and disable the logical thinking. I know the pilots are being trained, but they are still people.
I used to do some extreme and not very extreme sports. I saw people petrified and stiff once something goes wrong, even though you know it and trained that. I can tell a lot of stories that would seemingly sound like "the sky is blue" except people are loosing control of whatever happens.
Simple example - I once faced tourists group that panicked just because some member tripped and fall on the road and broke a leg. On the road. Where car can reach (not on a freiken mountain hanging on rope 500 meters above the ground). In 10-15 minutes drive from closest rescue base to my knowledge. With clear mobile phone coverage. Whole group was standing shocked for nearly _half an hour_ around that person without even giving any kind of help or pain reliever. Noone even tried to call ambulance or rescue team - it's was a simple as calling 911 (112 for that region). It's a darn broken leg, not an advance rescue operation or advanced knowledge. Just give a pain reliever and call rescue guys. Not a broken single engine of the plane.
And I just don't want to tell more severe and dangerous cases.
it worth admitting it - people DO panic sometimes. Even trained ones. And yes - sometimes simple calm and confident word even of passer by can "reboot" individual. Reminding "fly the plane" doesn't cost anyone on frequency too much. It's not much of distraction. Just a word of support and remind.

PIC: "I have an engine out. I'll be landing on Lake Butler."
ATC: "Copy that. Be advised Lake Butler is water, not land."
PIC: "Copy. I'll be splashing Lake Butler."
Crash 6: "I'll be waiting for you at the airport."

First instruction I ever received from my instructor, and the first thing I ever pass on to a student is echoed in what the unidentified voice at 2:37 said..."Maintain control, sir. Fly the plane".
In an airplane, or even if in a car, a boat, a motorcycle...when the unexpected happens the outcome will likely balance as much or more on whether you continue to fly, drive or operate your vehicle and less on the circumstances. Never forget to fly your airplane.

      T H I S
The one time I lost control on the interstate, my snap reaction was to go into skid control mode and I put the car into hard opposite steering lock. It didn't recover the skid, but it kept the car skidding sideways on a straight trajectory, and ultimately off the side of the highway and into some shrubs instead of skewering me on the end of a guard rail.
Only damage was some blades of grass stuck between the tire beads and rims.

If something goes wrong on your motorcycle, it's going to be pretty hard to operate it though. Sure it has happened many times before but more often than not, the safe option is actually leaving the bike to do it's own thing and focusing on sliding on your skid pads if you have them.

    • @RealCadde
      @RealCadde 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@calyodelphi124 Yes, i've seen it so many times in crash videos. People losing control either darting it into the guard rails/side barriers or fishtailing it a couple of times and then sliding into the rails.
Best option is to try and enter a powerslide only focusing on keeping the vehicle going somewhat forwards on the road sideways.
It's not a game and it's not a race track so you'd better NOT try and recover at 60+ mph because that's how people die. Race drivers can do it on the race track but only because they have race cars set up for that stuff, safety gear and crash barriers.

Exactly! As a career firefighter for a large and busy department, I can confirm that as soon as his finger left the mic key, he said exactly that or something along the lines of...”10 miles?! WTF do you want me to do about it?!” Unfortunately, for many guys with a lot of years under their belts, they become complacent and irritated even when they have to run a call. Ending up at your city’s airport station is kind of a running joke throughout the fire service. You’ve gone there to ride out your last few years and not do much because airport fire stations are notoriously slow. Old salty dogs that should just hang up their boots and helmet and call it good. They give us all a bad name. in my humble opinion, the department should make every probationary firefighter or even your 1st three years at the airport and not allow the old salt and vinegar guys go there to retire. If only. Sorry folks, not all firefighters were created equal.

Need to be kinder to crash 6. Most common for them to respond to incoming emergencies or incidents on/near the field. And clearly that's what they thought. Was only alerted because plane was initially trying to make it back. Those diesel engines on the fire vehicles are super loud & maybe had gear on too. Give them some credit for being the ones willing to respond to a crash & run right up to the fire. 🚒

Crash 6 did not have a nice youtube video with all information from DIFFERENT frequencies. Even ground didn't have the most up to date info as they talked to him! Ground said alert 2 (emergency vehicle inbound), not alert 3 (aircraft down) so it's understandable he would ask again when told essentially 'emergency aircraft is coming, went down 10 miles west'. Is it down, or is it coming, ground?
And if it crashed 10 miles west, do you want them to go, or would you rather call fire dept, who are probably closer and most likely have BOATS to get to the plane in the water... Never saw a boat chasing down emergency landing aircraft on an airport personally...
Tower was dealing with a lot of things atm, and giving up to date, not completely verified (tail number? saved by someone on boat?) info was probably not high on their priority list.
Chase 2 happened to be near and on frequency, and offered help, real nice guy. But he only saw people on board a boat by the crashed plane, so its not verified everyone was safe. And since aircraft was submerged, he could not confirm the tail number - you never know, maybe it was different aircraft that crashed into the lake, and the one they talked to crashed somewhere else.
    Am I missing something?

A 49 Year Old man and his 9-year-old daughter were injured Friday evening when a small plane plunged into Lake Down near Windermere, Orange County Fire Rescue said.
The Piper PA-32 plane, which departed from Orlando Executive Airport, plunged into the lake shortly before 6:15 p.m., officials said.
The man was brought to Orlando Regional Medical Center, and his daughter was brought to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
Their conditions weren't known, officials said. Neither person was publicly identified. Two boaters were credited with rescuing the man and his daughter. Austin Keaton and João Pacheco said they immediately jumped into action to help them.
“When it started going down lower, we were, like, that doesn't look right, so we turned the boat around to boat over to them if they crashed,” Keaton said. “All he was concerned about was his daughter. 'Get her on board. Get her on board.' That's all he cared about.”
The Federal Aviation Administration said it received reports of engine problems from the plane before it crashed.
“It's just one of those things you'll never think you'll see until it happens,” Pacheco said.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board investigated the crash. Could not determine the reason for engine loss.

It's pretty much an issue of airplane travel being very safe, retirement age for firefighters being too high and the fact that you don't need to climb a lot of stairs in full gear when responding to a burning plane. Also the fire departments can't exactly fire the old firefighters without significant short- and long-term problems.

Ditching into water out of Orlando Executive has happened a few times. These two are lucky to be alive. 9 year old granddaughter was his passenger.
That airport location ... its so densely urban, you just kind of know when you take off there that ditching into a lake is your best bet if something goes wrong ... and you know the odds of surviving it are low.

They were both injured. When the boat got to them, the pilot was treading water, holding the other passenger (his 9-year-old daughter). She was crying and had visible head trauma, with bone showing and blood down her face. The pilot was in severe back pain. They were both taken to the hospital and both survived.
For future reference: when you have a question like that, you can just use Google to find the answer. Just search for a few words including what happened and where. "Lake Butler plane crash" for example.

I often wonder if single engine pilots who lose power near the ground are taught that ditching is a good option in an area with many obstructions or rough terrain. 1) Natural fire control 2) smooth surface 3) low speed means high chance of survival 4) nothing living to hit 5) large target.
