A very long time ago, I added this thing to my parents garage, tied it off the garage door opener light. It has 2 lasers. You park your car and set the one laser to shine on your dash somewhere that you will remember. Then next time you just drive in until the laser is where you set it, perfect parking to the inch every time. 2 lasers so you can set another car perfectly too. 2 car garage etc. I like that idea a lot, nothing hangs down like the tennis ball.
It still requires the front bumper camera addition. It shall arrive quickly in 2024 according to code leaks. I hope that it will be possible to retrofit them for current owners.
Yeah, I hope there is a retro fit for front bumper camera. I am not holding breath for this to ever happen. If not, this park assist will be inaccurate for face front parking. I do have HW4 and the newer cameras on my Model Y.
@@dathyr1 - I believe it is technically possible for the car to accurately show what’s in front of it without additional cameras or sensors. It can see what’s in front of it as it goes forward. The software just has to remember and calculate distance from these objects as it rolls forward and the objects go out of view.
@@TeslaDawg it definitely already does that. It needs to be more accurate for objects further away, which makes a lot of intuitive sense since it's harder for humans as well to estimate far away objects. But it's hard to see that it can ever be equal in performance to the rear assuming they improve at the same rate.
Thanks. I didn't even think about the map while filming the video so i had the hassle of editing it out. In the future, I'll use mars mode, put a towel over it, or just open a browser to hide the map.
My experience is that the parking space lines don’t show up when you’re parking going forward unless you momentarily shift the car into reverse. Then all the lines show up and as you shift back into drive, the parking lines remain. Don’t know what the reason for needing to shift into reverse would be. This could be fixed rapidly or take a year or two: you never know. Also, there’s no need for the visualization when you’re going into reverse as your rear parking camera is the gold standard for seeing your position in the parking space.
It has my experience too that sometimes you need to put it in reverse for the 3D view to start showing up. Also, backing into a space is easy due to the 3 cameras you can see.
Thank you for the video. I personally don't like the new parking assist. I thought it was fine before. The car picked up all obstacles and it marked the curb while I parked. I have no idea what the H#!! this new thing is. Sometimes things are working just fine and they don't need to be changed.
My personal experience was that parking assist is better now than before especially in the garage. In the garage it was guessing what objects were in there which is why people were seeing semitrucks appearing. At least now, you have a 3D view that you can change the perspective and get an idea of where solid objects are located.
@@TeslaDawg Thank you for the response. Maybe there is something that I am not doing or seeing however what's your opinion on curb parking? The car used to pick up the curb and help me not scrape the crap out of my tires and rims. Now I don't see anything and it's a total guess. It just seemed better to me before.
@@eugeneflorence4355 - I haven't had the opportunity to try any parallel parking yet. I've read from others that parking assist does pick up the curb. I'll check it out in a future video.
@@TeslaDawg You have to stop and place the car in park. And then go from there. Before you could just drive to the curb and the car would pick up the visual. IMO I just think it was better before.
If you are referring to the concrete wheel stops, the cameras can see them as it pulls forward. It should be able to remember they are there and calculate distance as the car pulls forward even when the car is to close for the camera to see. It obviously remembers what it saw as evidence of the 3D view it draws (even shows objects no longer visible outside of the garage. It is improving.
Thanks for sharing this with honest assessment instead of the hype channels prevalent which are just trying to generate views by sensationalizing everything. I recently took delivery of m3rwd and was looking forward to this feature but in my opinion, coming from a 360 camera view BMW from 2012, this is a miss. The graphics are ugly and innacurate compared to the proper solution which has been available for over a decade. 360 cameras. You can easily see in your video when you back up into a spot and see the utility of the rear camera vs the park assist. Which would one prefer? The camera view every time. Thats the solution. I'm not sure if it's cost cutting or stubborn pride, but going with this overcomplicated method instead of just adding a camera to the front and mirrors seems insane to me. Just look at the 360 views in modern BMWs and copy what works Tesla!
My comment is for new vehicles. Obviously any improvements to existing vehicles with hardware limitations is a plus and I appreciate the effort but knowing that the 2024 m3 refresh still does not have additional cameras or sensors and instead will depend on software to compensate is the problem. Even adding back the sensors would be an improvement as it would give accurate range to the blobs the camera sees.
I can't argue with you. The front bumper is a big blind spot which could be easily fixed with a camera or sensor. Tesla has indicated in the past that they aren't going to add a camera or sensor to any car that is already sold. Maybe they'll add it to new builds. That being said, even without a front bumper camera, Tesla Vision can see what's in front of it as it approaches. It should be able to remember and calculate distances to obstacles even after the camera can no longer see them because they are below the hood of the car.
@@TeslaDawg Yes. I do believe that the technology will get better and could eventually be as good as a front bumper camera and or sensors. But it seems silly to commit to innovating a new solution that could take years to realize equality to sensors and bumper cameras when the solution already exists. Now, what may be happening here is that Tesla is simply developing capabilities for FSD and Tesla vision furthers that end game because bumper sensors can only read but so far ahead. But again, in the meantime, Tesla customers get less. I mean, the cars had sensors, just keep them until the new technology is ready instead of removing too early. I'm done ranting. My Model Y got this 2023.44.30.4 update a few days ago. Yesterday, another update 2023.44.30.6 came out. Not sure of the difference, but of course I got it done. I didn't see anything difference between the 2 updates. If you do your .4 update now, then the .6 update will likely come pretty soon.
Actually, that is fairly good for the first version of High Fidelity Parking Assist (better to be safe than push the limits too soon). I'm sure it will keep getting better in future versions. Remember, this is a brand new feature that improved your car and didn't cost you any more money. Cars from legacy manufacturers never get better after you buy them.
No, but the legacy cars have those functions implemented from the start, but then in form of actual imagery (cameras). And what is the renderings based on, that you can see as High Fidelity? Cameras. So why not instead let the cameras be shown as live video like every other car manufacturer, and maybe with an overlay graphics like for instance BMW?
My understanding is that those sort of simulated overhead views require cameras places at specific angles for that purpose (angles that cannot be used for driving) and Tesla doesn’t have cameras for that. They have cameras set for outward visibility for autopilot and FSD. Tesla is trying to mimic that feature in software.
It is definitely more practical, glad we got this update. I wished there was also a way of toggling this view on/off, rather than waiting the system figure out the parking attempt. I am sure this will improve, and now there some hope of auto parking returning as a feature somewhat as it should have been.
Sometimes when the view doesn't come on, I put the car in reverse and then it'll show up. Also, sometimes touching the screen helps. I have a theory that if you are in the middle of navigating then it will not show the 3D view until you reach your destination but I haven't tested it yet.
When you drive above 10 mph the enhanced vision isn’t working. So drive slower when you get in your garage and you’ll see what’s happening. And the USS wouldn’t pick the short curb at all.
I wasn’t driving anywhere near 10 mph. The park assist usually activates at 3 mph but not always. Sometime you have to put it in park and then in drive or reverse to get it to show.
Quite frankly, this is NOWHERE near as good as the 360 bird eye park assist integrated camera view that I had on my Infiniti FX50 15 years ago. They have the cameras(except the front bumper camera which is coming soon). Why can't they just do the thing that works?
I think they were hoping that the 3 existing front facing cameras would be good enough. Front bumper cameras are easily broken and hard to keep clean while on the road. Unfortunately without it, you can't get a 360 view.
@@TeslaDawg On my FX50, the camera was on the front under the emblem, not the bumper. Tesla could do the same but it appears they've chosen the bumper itself which is lower and not as good for a 360 bird eye view which would be far better than this generated object implementation.
You need the 2023 Holiday update on a car without USS for the high fidelity parking assist. Once you are going 2mph or slower the 3D view will show up. Autopark (ability for the car to park itself) is only available on cars with USS right now. Camera only cars are supposed to get it “soon”. I thought maybe it would have been part of this holiday update but obviously it isn’t ready yet. Also, you must have purchased “enhanced autopilot” or FSD in order to use Autopark.
Well it is nice but still don't trust its accuracy. When I pull into my garage front first and says STOP, I still have 2 feet before I get to the wall. So it is about the same as the older Park Assist. You either like it or not type of system. It is a aid and I still rely on my eyes looking around to say that I am parked good enough. Graphics when Park assist turns on is not the greatest for accuracy.
Yes it seems to be a different view of the same data. I do like that you can put your finger on the screen and change the view. The default top down view doesn’t show everything. I agree. It’s just an aid. I do think it’s an improvement and will continue to improve.
True. Once it said "stop", I rolled forward 3 or 4 inches because I knew I could. Not very scientific but it was just a quick test. It looks like it tells me to stop when I'm around 12" to 16" away from something. Much better than before when it was telling me to stop when I was only halfway in the garage.
Crap should have left sensors on like older ones had. Tried to save a few bucks. See why they did not send this out to old cars with sensors. Looks useless at this point.
It still sucks. It is unacceptable that 2024 is right around the corner and Tesla doesn’t have a decent park assist. It would take a mere $20 front facing bumper camera to fix the issue. Parking is after all a big part of the average user’s driving experience and for a $50+K car, it is just ridiculous.

You already have the option to turn on cameras whenever you like. It takes over the area where the map is. Of course, this won't do you any good in showing what's directly a few feet in front of the front bumper since there is no camera there.
