New to leverless controllers and just got into SF6 because of Haute42. Got my U16 first and I enjoyed it but i still had some reservations. The R16 Black arrived and now I am obsessed.
@@VidVayder Button spacing, the sturdier feel and the matte black finish. I wash my hands often but even after just a 30 minute session, the surface of the U16 became gunky. I thought the placement of the additional left thumb button (U16) vs left pinky (R16) would matter a lot but i don't really care for either at this time. I do prefer the fastening design on the U16 but the plastic body makes for the louder plastic sound compared to the R16 Black. The single acrylic top also has a lot more give and i noticed a very slight depression in the center of the U16 compared to the sandwiched design of the R16. The ability to adjust the "height" on the U16 is pretty interesting too, ended up using 3 backing sheets but because of the flex, the button height in relation to the rims are not consistent throughout all the buttons. I appreciate your reviews and insight. Thank you.
Pretty much nailed it 👍 build wise I also prefer the R, but I wish it was as easy to open up as the U. I recommend trying the Wind Engine switches if you haven’t already. It improves every model I’ve tried them with.
Literally a savior! You saved our get-togethers with a friend. I play on pc using r16 and bought booter 5 specifically to kick a friend's ass in tekken 8 on his ps5. we haven't seen each other for a long time because of his move to another city. Thanks to your help in the haute42 discord chat, we were able to play together again. Legend.
@@TravisMCP I would say it's visible yes, but not as visible as prints on the Kitsune. It does seem quite easy to clean though. I use a microfibre cloth that's designed for phone screens (the kind you get when you buy a screen protector). It didn't seem a big enough deal for me to point it out specifically, but then it could also be that my hands tend to be dry lol. So my final answer is yes, more visible than the R16 Crystal but also easier to clean than most controllers I've used.
In my opinion the caps should be 20.3 it makes a difference when their QC is not totally on point. I have noticed some of the buttons actually rubs against the side of them making them not as smooth as they should, out of all my buttons 4 of them had this problem. When i switch to after market 20.3 buttons it felt way smoother. But i like the surface texture or the stock ones better 😅
Thanks for the review, wish the keycaps height were lower profile. Not sure if this will improve or fix sliding. Sliding is kinda hard to do using finger tips, though you've demo it using finger joints and it works. That method may not apply to all, as this depends on how your playstyle pressing buttons and it may cause delay executing commands.
You’re welcome, thanks for watching. Yeah sliding does require adjustment. They can either lower the caps or maybe raise the height of the chassis. I have two pieces of artwork on my R16 Crystal and it seems to be slightly easier to slide because the artwork thickens the body.
Would be cool to see how the R16 performs with the kaihl deep whale silent linear switches. They have nearly the same specs as the crystal ones but with reduced sound.
I've heard a few things about the Deep Whales, they sound good. I've been experimenting with different sounds lately though and I must say, I'm enjoying the Kailh Wizards a lot on this controller. Never knew I would end up enjoying a clicky switch.
If this gets an R13 version i'll buy it in an instant. I like the rings around the buttons but the extra buttons might get in the way and im not willing to risk it. Hopefully they'll do an r13 version. Also is the input latency
Hey bro, I responded on reddit but will do it here too: yes it’s the same polling rate as their other controllers and other ones that use the GP2040-CE firmware. You can see exact details and numbers on the gp2040-ce website. As for the extra buttons, you can disable them if they’re in the way, and rebind them later if you feel like they could be useful 👍
Do the default black keycaps feel different from their regular white version? contemplating on getting one locally but the black version is a bit more expensive than the white regular one and just gonna base it on feeling
Won't that black case leave marks after being used for a long period of time ? My laptop is black and I noticed some type of marks of my wrist or palm on it, so I was wondering if it'll happen here. I'd love to buy my first leverless but I don't know what to choose, I love the style of the black ones, it feels more elegant, simple, but the fact that we can custom the transparent case is also appealing 🤯
I’m not too sure how the frosted acrylic would react to hand oils over time, but then I am the kind to wipe my controllers often. My guess is that acrylic would suffer from this less compared to aluminium. It would take a lot of time for this to take effect if it does happen. Yes both the transparent and opaque models have their qualities. Just depends if you’re likely to go through the art modding process :)
Hey, you can either follow the instructions in this video (I've time stamped it at 4:46), or click on the link in the description of the video that explains it: th-cam.com/video/XzmkNb7eJ98/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KkgMLtAkBOQkKngL&t=296
My question is why someone would even get this version if it costs the same as the normal one and doesn't allow for artwork to fit in? Heck you can even get the normal one and put a black cover if you have minimalistic tastes but at the long road you can get art.
Yes the original R16 is versatile when it comes to looks. My guess is that some might prefer the cleaner looking screen here and the non see through rims (the rims are built into the top plate). The effect is quite pleasant, having the buttons framed by a thin RGB line. But again some might prefer the see through rims of the original R16 that lets more light out.
I just bought this leverless and was wondering if I could install the blue Wind Engine switches with the original 2.8 mm travel from Haute, or if they are not compatible
Yes the Wind Engines (which I really like) are compatible. I just looked at the two switches (crystal and wind engine) side by side and the dimensions look identical. I've also installed Wind Engines on other Haute42 boards like the R16 and M Plus, so I'm pretty sure it will work. Even the Kailh Wizards work, which you can see in my sound test :)
That is probably a mistake on the listing. The top plate isn’t transparent enough for art. If you want black rims with art go for the U16. Although the spacing on buttons will be a bit wider than the R.
Thankfully, they're all the same under the hood. The biggest difference for me is the build quality and mods. The DOIO feels and looks quite precise. However, the build of the DOIOs (at least the model I reviewed) contribute to a hollow sound. This is neither good nor bad. As the keeb community would say; "it's all preference". Personally, I prefer the deeper sounds of the Haute42 boards I have used (R, M and G), but enjoy the base look of the DOIO I have. When you factor in art mods, the story changes though!
Of these two I would recommend the R16 more. The Maestro S3 is a bit too light for me, and the button placement isn't as comfortable as R16. I think if the Maestro was longer and made of higher quality materials it would be better. Also, if you are a PS5 player you would need to use a Brook Wingman to connect, so the wireless feature would be wasted.
My white one was also creaking when I first got it. After putting on new art and tightening the screws (not too tight, don't crack it), the creaking isn't as noticeable. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try. I haven't noticed the creaking on the black as much as the white one, but of course if you hold both ends and twist it on purpose it will make a noise.
@@ital1489 Wait, I just realised I might be wrong about this. I think they're actually clipped on. Give me a few minutes to take it apart and verify. NOTE: I have edited my above response.

You could always adjust the cut yourself later, but that takes skill. Alternatively, Ayano might already have an R16 template cut and available so they can lay it on top of the controller to see if it would fit properly?
