A great essay on the franchise's antiwar themes, and G Unicorn's message of wonder and hope. Also agree about the amazing music; the soundtrack can move me to tears.
The protagonist was already a newtype before piloting the Unicorn. So were his closest friends. You have to watch carefully. Notice when characters are able to stare off into the distance and miraculously spot whomever they're looking for. Notice how some characters cheat death and are stated to be good at doing just that. It might seem like plot armor, but Gundam Unicorn rewards repeat viewings. Cardias suspected his son was a newtype and put him through intense training, which caused his wife to leave and take Banager. When Banager confronts Cardias in the Unicorn during the destruction of Megalonica, toward the beginning, Cardias activates his latent training by the use of a subliminal phrase, and gets him to automatically recite Newtype philosophy. Suddenly they're no longer arguing, and Banager is being asked if he's ready.
I watched the Origin, blitzed through ZZ, saw Char's Counter Attack, and finished Unicorn all in the span of around 3 months or so ending now (just finished Unicorn) as I write this message. I've seen the OG Gundam, Zeta, the 08th MS Team, Stardust Memories, and the War in the Pocket over the past few years. This series has become one of my favorites because of its characters, storytelling, and awesome action. This is my first time on your channel, but I agree with your assessment wholeheartedly.
It gave me goosebumps on the last minutes of the mesages. The message was so clear, it touched my heart, wanting me to buy a Unicorn HG, Build it, and customize it. Thanks dude... Thanks...

Unicorn was my first introduction into the world of Gundam. Watched it basically on a random whim almost 3 years ago. I undoubtedly didn't get all the references to older Universal Century works, but it still opened my mind with all the topics it hit on so well. Having gone back and watched all the older series, then seeing unicorn again,I love it even more. It's the ultimate love letter to the Universal Century. My favourite Gundam, and one of my top ten favorite anime of all time. It's beautiful in every way.
Banagher didn’t become a NewType when piloting the Unicorn. He enhanced and evolved his already owned powers while piloting the beast. If you watched the series completely you’d see the flashbacks he had as a child (hence the partial reason he left his father’s side). After all to prove this theory he does notice the Unicorn (which Cardeas Vist states that no one could spot)
@@KoriTheAnder he is a natural newtype who received cyber newtype training, this kind of stuffs were explained more in the Narrative, but to sum it up, Cardeas suspicions towards his son being a newtype was true; and begun to train him rather strictly. Seeing this, his mother; Anna, disagreed as she doesn't want Banagher to live a life shackled to the burdens of his family (e.g the Laplace box), and took him away
I found your explanation of Gundam Unicorn to be moving and hyped me up about this series. Even though I've already seen most of it. Thanks for sharing this.
When i watched Gundam Unicorn back in 2016 it pulled me out of depression with its message of possibilities and hope. This particular Gundam will have a special place in my heart for coming at the right time in my life Long live the UC continuity! Long live the Gundam franchise!
Thank god you wasn't watching gundam zeta at the time. Like that literally woulda only made shit worse. Zeta is when tomino(director) went "FULL TOMINO" Like dead ass serious, kill em all wouldn't have helped at all.
Wow, you're good. Never thought I could have tears to a dude's narration, and I've even watched the series before! Gundam Unicorn is no doubt my favorite anime. It's the War and Peace for future generation.
My first Gundam experience was IBO and while I did enjoy it I felt as if it was missing something. Then one of my friends, who at the time was buying and building GUNPLA, told me about a Gundam series that they really disliked. A story about some teenage beta male who cries his way through a war. I thought "it can't be that bad" and so I decided to watch, at the very least, the intro the series. The second after the opening had finished I turned to him and said "Oh god, that was the single greatest anime opening sequence I've ever seen". From that moment I knew I was going to fall in love with Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. The compassionate, emotionally charged story, engaging characters, empathetic narrative, exquisite animation, riveting soundtrack and incredible mech on mech set pieces all culminated into what I believe to be one of anime's most humanist stories ever told. Nothing captures the essence of pure optimism, of hope, quite like the launch of the RX-0. For these reasons - and so many more - Unicorn will always be my favorite Gundam series. Sure, I may not have seen 'em all, but even so...
@@chitandaeru7239 I feel you, my friends all love IBO because of its rawness... But Unicorn speak more. Yes, it doesn't feed your children side with extreme actions and battles but the dialogue, interactions between Banagher and everyone, all prove that humans are humans, having same emotions and feel the same things, you can understand that they all do things with reasons of their own that is very human while also acknowledging the suffering, the torment, and desperation of all sides... Then it ends up with conclusion, that the bad guys are those who had no emotions; evil psychopath and megalomaniac such as that Anaheim aunty (forgot the name) and Frontal... IBO is cool, but when compared to Unicorn it's like comparing a Symphony to a Pop music
Gundam Unicorn is my all time favorite gundam series so far and I recently binged through gundam 0079. Now that I've read comments about this series being a love letter to the UC universe I'm gonna binge the rest of the series.
I think that captures the spirit of this Gundam iteration. It’s a pretty elaborate and philosophical narrative - to me it was very powerful. It’s my favorite anime still.
Before watching Gundam Unicorn: meh just another OVA First transformation scene: Oh sh*t, that’s pretty cool After Unicorn: Time to throw my wallet in the void of model kits
Thank you for this! I just watched the 7 part OVA movies and they're so good! Transcendent even. The artstyle and animation, the music and sound effects, the characters and world world building. It's a masterpiece!
good analysis of gundam. Unicorn is the most cinematic Gundam, but i have a feeling that the upcoming 'Hathaway' Gundam trilogy will take things to another level.
Yeah, sorry Lava but I strongly disagree. Sure, Unicorn CAN be watched without watching any other UC series and be enjoyed. But not experienced. You dont understand the weight of Full Frontal's role if you dont understand Char's actions thorought the years. Or Bright's sterness if you havent seen him care for other Gundam pilots. Or fully comprehend Marida's pain without having cried for Plu or Plu 2. Gundam Unicorn must be earned, not simply be watched. Otherwise, the purpose of the show is lost. Still, cool vid as always.
Oh yeah, I definitely agree that Unicorn becomes a lot more significant after watching the UC Gundam shows that have come before it; my only reasoning for why I think it can work as an introduction to the series is because I wasn't very familiar with the Universal Century as a whole when I watched Gundam Unicorn, and that's what mostly got me interested in the franchise. I'm only speaking from personal experience, so it's possible that others may not feel the same way that I do.
CaptHawkeye I kinda agree but at the same time disagree: Yes, the story is fully watchable and good without prior knowledge of the franchise, but a lot of the impact of the story is lost if you don't experience before how many lives were lost during all these conflicts. If you don't know the character of Char Aznable, you won't realize the truly BIG impact of his supposed return in Full Frontal. If you don't know who Amuro Ray, Kamille Bidan, or Judau Ashta are, then you won't understand the sentiments of Bright Noa towards the new pilot and the same goes with Ple and Ple Two in relation with Marida Cruz. I would say Unicorn as a whole is a love letter to the Universal Century and it (in my opinion) should be watched as that. Knowing the conflict and all these characters is essential to truly grasp the meaning of what the Unicorn Gundam represents.
It's true that a lot of impact would be lost without watching the previous entries, but Unicorn is still in of itself a solid show that has elements that you could understand even without previous knowledge. The gap of knowledge it gives to newcomers does nothing but entice more interest to the franchise as a whole, and it eventually could lead to a rewatch but now with the experience of the previous entries. After all, this is a series that is worth seeing more than once... And well, to see it "blind" does come with its own unique experience that you wont have after knowing it all.
I couldn't agree more, having just recently watched the OG Mobile Suit Gundam, I really want to go back and re watch Unicorn, since I viewed that while it was airing on Toonami (Go ahead and judge).
Yeah, Zeta Gundam is pretty campy, and sometimes the Gundam shows directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino aren't the best places to start. In addition to Gundam Unicorn, I'd also recommend Gundam: The Origin, War in the Pocket, and the 08th MS Team. You could try watching the compilation movies instead of the 1979 and Zeta Gundam tv series, but I still have yet to see the movies for myself.
This my first watching this, hearing you explaining about uc gundam and everything make me want to cry , because i believe in a spark of hope in humanity and empathy....i glad i found gundam when i was a kindergarten.....up until now even though i watch alot of anime and mecha , but gundam still my 1 in my heart This really a wonderful video
Rewatching again after many years still think it's one of the best videos explaining Gundam Unicorn. But at 5:43 still think this is the only real wrong bit of info of the video because that writer isn't that at all. And also just because a writer has a certain political view, regardless of what it is, doesn't mean he automatically tries to push his views in all his creative works.
I watched Unicorn's 22-episode show not knowing anything about it, and not having watched any original UC episodes, and I still was shocked at how much I loved it, and how much it made me care about what was at stake. Totally recommend the show even if you've never watched Gundam.
This video perfectly sums up why Unicorn is my favorite in the series. It did everything right and on top of it all, a message of hope, understanding, and potential for all humanity.
Imagine that. Hope in the universal century such a novel idea. Then we get Hathaway a decade later and none of this resonated with anybody which I ain’t mad at cause that’s just how shit goes down in the U.C.
@@chriscueva1866 I haven't read the Hathaway novels, so keep that in mind. But until I either read the novels, or they finish the Hathaway Trilogy, I consider Unicorn to be my ending to the UC timeline. The Gundam timeline as a whole has a huge timeline consistency issue, especially the farther out you go. The first example of this is Char's character change between Zeta and CCA. Sure, we can fill in the blanks, but it would be so much better if he made an appearance in ZZ, that way we could understand what actually happened to him. Its a similar issue with Unicorn and Hathaway. Hathaway seems great, and I'm totally willing to believe that Unicorns' messages went no where, but I need a reason.
"In 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam changed the entire narrative of giant robot shows, by making the robots less like superheroes, and more like actual vehicles that would be used in the military." And in 2010, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn would change the entire narrative of giant robot shows back to being superheroes.
I have to say, pretty much every UC gundam does it's best to humanize zion or at the very least try's to show it's people and their perspective. the entire theme of gundam is that humans are imperfect, and we fight for many reasons. it doesn't make us bad, it's just a result of an inability to understand circumstances of others... which is why the most powerful beings within gundam all have this ability. the nirvana of gundam is perfect empathy and complete understanding. the only real evil is the war itself, and people that push for it to continue because they either benefit or profit from it.
I had no Inyerest in checking out Unicorn -but because of your beautifully presented essay on the series I HAVE to check it out. Well played sir. Subscribed.
Anyone who watches Gundam Unicorn as their first UC Gundam series is cheating themselves. Also, the Unicorn Gundam doesn't make Banagher a Newtype, he was already a Newtype. You see flashbacks of his Cyber Newtype development and he also senses Mineva falling prior to ever getting in Unicorn.
Fun fact: at 7:57 gundam unicorn literally reverse the time itself. That why his armor turn into Cristal. It reversed part of it's armour into minerals before the time it being mined This is the author/ novel writer said not me
What he is meant is after that. The federation mobile suits are the one that is being reverse back into the unassembled state. The crystallization has happened because Banagher fused with the psycho frame. (Banagher enter into the psycho frame) Then he reverses Unicorn back from being in crystallization state. Me as a fourteen years old has watched unicorn,Battlelogue currently watching witch from mercury and turn A And I am telling you Gundam is not that that friendly,it is realistic about war and showing us that not even kids or elderly are even spares from this, Iron blooded orphans shows us about kids being forced to be veteran Soldiers and many died because of that war, The UC Century shows us that both sides don't want this war to happen but it did because of stupid reasons such as politics or law that went too far for no reason, causing a war to break out , examples like having a war just to have the Laplace box secret in unicorn series and fighting against each other to decide whether the moonrace and the earthrace will stay in peace together shown by turn a gundam, not even the end yet, Gundam even shows us how hell and terrifying it is, especially that may even happen anytime, the innocents die over a war for nothing, fighting for nothing,Greediness for extra land and money or a capital that started a war that it shouldn't have, Gundam shows us reality of humans, it is just like the concept of war we have in the years and timelines, if you are not strong enough to watch the most depressing series, then don't watch because every UC century is showing devastating wars and character dying one by one
I totally agree with all what you wrote, Unicorn is probably the best of all series and like you it really tags into more of the human emotion and future.
Unicorn isn’t just a Gundam, it’s THE Gundam. In lore, regardless of timeline, most Gundam’s bottom-line purpose remains the same: bringing people together and guiding them to the future. That’s the reason they’re mechs and not ships. Unicorn’s story is the epitome of that ethos. Qan[T]? Sure, it comes close. Nu? Didn’t really succeed in the long term, did it. But the Unicorn? It did it; it put and end to the Earth-Zeon war.
Wasn't he a cyber newtype who became a true newtype? Likewise, Riddhe wasn't shown to be any sort of newtype, but he definitely was by the end. Hopefully, someone can shed some light on this.
Jeffrey Williams well from what I understood the la plus system was created to indenting true new types and since banagher was shown to definitely be one and riddhe at the end of the series that must mean they where always ‘true new types’ the confusion is that the anime states that banagher underwent tests and training not unlike a cyber new type but doesn’t state that he was one
For Banagher, the way I understood it is that as a kid he was trained in a similar way to a cyber newtype to develop his potential as a Newtype. Meanwhile Riddhe awoke his potential as a newtype when he piloted the Banshee.
Here's where you're wrong about the writer of the novel. Yes, he does want Japan to have more military power, and that is definitively conservative for Japan, but he's not an imperialist. He just wants Japan to be able to stand on its own, and not always have to turn to the states for military service. Gundam Unicorn is the series that gave me hope for humanity while also challenging my hope at the same time. It's my favorite work of fiction ever.
He is also wrong about the "pro" war comment, to be an Imperialist doesn't = Pro War, to be Right Wing also doesn't = Pro War. It's why that part of the video is a tad cringe worthy. It's based off bad assumptions. As I said in an older comment, you have to know the real world politics behind Gundam, and Japan itself to really catch what the story "original" story anyways is getting at. If you're oblivious to it will likely fly over your head. There are a series of videos by the Mad Monarchist about the Japanese Empire during the 2nd Sino Japanese War and WWII. They're good "For Dummies" videos to kind of get in the head of a modern Japanese Imperialist's view of history, and it really shows in Unicorn when you watch it. It has a huge Historical Revisionist Vibe in the Early Episodes at least. Which tickled my funny bones, as I knew a lot of people wouldn't even notice. Also Imperialist in Japan likely means something different than say in the USA or Europe, being even without foreign territory Japan was still an Empire. To be an Imperialist in Japan is to be a supporter of the Emperor, and is more along the lines of a Monarchist in Europe. Closest European example would likely be Germany, and the reinstallment of the Hohenzollern house as Kaiser, ie not the only German Royal Family but the one that "Lead" the German Empire, and unification of all the German... most of the German states, ie German Empire. It like Japan was an Empire with a Pseudo Emperor without really holding foreign land.
+Kevin not just that the last Gundam 0083 for example reference the Satsuma Rebellion with ending basically being the Battle of Shiroyama. Despite most of the story feels more like a Reference to ODESSA which was an operation which smuggled Nazis and former Nazi wealthy into exile in foreign lands with the hope of rising again to reclaim their homeland, which never came. They helped finance Werewolves which was a code name from the time of the war and post war period, pretty much a pro Nazi Germany Resistance Fighter force while under allied occupation. Their operations quickly stopped within about a year with only very small scale attacks since. Reprisals by the allies often outweighed any gains so most werewolves disbanded.

It is indeed one of the most well present UC arc, and you can really tell what the japanese can do if they have enough budget to make something great. Unfortunately, so many great book/story were either mis-told, wrongly represented because low budget issue.
Ryder Heim I saw both versions. Well, the thing is that you can stick to the 7 episodes version as it flows more naturally. The 22 episodes version has more scenes and some of them are very dramatic, but it seems that something has been lost a bit and the opening, clothing and the previous recaps are sometime take about 7 mins out of a 24 mins episode. The choice is yours...😊
I gotta be honest as a gundam fan who watched unicorn as their first uc show I was completely lost but I also watched the Netflix version that like 8 50 min episodes so once I watch more uc I plan to remwatch the full 20 min 25 ep version now that I have a better understanding of new types and more of the ef and zeon war
It’s spot on. You nailed it. That’s what’s so powerful about this fundamental franchise. It connected to powerfully they replaced the OG gundam in Odaiba with the Gundam unicorn. Some say I’ll see it.
I don't think it is a good entry into the franchise, but it's not like you can't... Just Keep In Mind, that the Newtype space magic in this one is WAY more than anything in the franchise, I'd even go as far as to say it's kinda like Star Wars the Rise of Skywalker, your suspension of disbelief will be STRECHED even for Gundam... And for all the hope this show brings, it's poetic that this show doesn't add anything to the franchise, maybe except for over the top space magic for the fans who want colorful magic covering their screen 24/7.
if you liked gundam unicorn then the Char's Counter Attack novel series you would love as although its events are different from the Canonical UC timeline it actually much like unicorn covers an anti war sentiment and also gives us an answer to the question posed by both Amuro and Char in CCA in the last novel/radiodrama series Gaia Gear: what should humanity do, go off into space and leave our proverbial cradle or stay on earth and hurt it more than we should?
War in the Pocket got me in Gundam. Then I watched the whole series of Stardust Memory and 08th Team. I have the dics/box sets for all three. When Gundam went out of the UC universe I kindda lost interest. But will definitely look Unicorn up! Thanks for this review!^^
I watched unicorn and for the most part found it boring. they were going for the whole "we need to understand one another" but i think Gundam 00 did it better. I love the Universal Century, Gundam 0083 is my top favorite gundam story. Wing is what got me into Gundam so i will alway shave a soft spot for it. when the shows went into the whole "Gunpla" aspect i lost interest, Gundam was always about war with some sort of subtext or atleast subtext i picked up on. 0083 was Nuclear weapons Wing was the use of drones in combat Seed was about Born vs Bred/ Bio engineering
Gundam "anything" f*cks with my emotions. Especially Gundam Seed and Destiny. For example, I automatically took side with Shinn Oska from the beginning. But his story arc began to twist and turn to the point of hating him or cheering for him. But that what makes Gundam great !!!
Unicorn Gundam Episode 1 is my first UC Timeline Gundam. I knew right from the start that I was missing a lot of references, so It made me watch the entire UC lineup. Then I went back to Unicorn and it made full sense. Now, UC is the only timeline I enjoy.
A possibility that humans are not ready for, and was locked and swept away. But also the possibility of opening new storylines bridging future UC timelines

"Unicorn, the beast of possibilities"
Love that word so much
Banagher didn’t become a NewType when piloting the Unicorn. He enhanced and evolved his already owned powers while piloting the beast. If you watched the series completely you’d see the flashbacks he had as a child (hence the partial reason he left his father’s side). After all to prove this theory he does notice the Unicorn (which Cardeas Vist states that no one could spot)
Yeah I think (it’s been a while since I’ve watched it) they say he’s a cyber new type in the show? I could be misremembering tho
@@KoriTheAnder he is a natural newtype who received cyber newtype training, this kind of stuffs were explained more in the Narrative, but to sum it up, Cardeas suspicions towards his son being a newtype was true; and begun to train him rather strictly. I found your explanation of Gundam Unicorn to be moving and hyped me up about this series. Even though I've already seen most of it. Thanks for sharing this.
When i watched Gundam Unicorn back in 2016 it pulled me out of depression with its message of possibilities and hope. This particular Gundam will have a special place in my heart for coming at the right time in my life
Long live the UC continuity!
So have you seen more Gundam shows yet?
The people 2who whine about "beta males" fundamentally misunderstand Gundam.
I really like that Banagher and Hathaway are the same age and basically reflect the ideals of Amuro and Char, respectively.

That last quote from the first episode of unicorn was just brilliant.
good analysis of gundam. Unicorn is the most cinematic Gundam, but i have a feeling that the upcoming 'Hathaway' Gundam trilogy will take things to another level.
First movie was okay... I don't think it accomplished what Unicorn did
Yeah, sorry Lava but I strongly disagree.
I wat he unicorn gundam first then went back and binged all of the the UC Gundam series and then rewatched unicorn
CaptHawkeye I kinda agree but at the same time disagree:
Yes, the story is fully watchable and good without prior knowledge of the franchise, but a lot of the impact of the story is lost if you don't experience before how many lives were lost during all these conflicts.
You've made me want to watch this show now.
*Smash Bros Announcer voice* SUCCESS!
Lavapasta it tried watching Zeta, but I lost interest in it, halfway through the first episode.

Lavapasta zeta's opening is super catchy, that's the main reason I watched it in the first place.

This really a wonderful video
The good music soundtrack from Gundam UC is an added bonus why anyone should watch it.
Most leftist writers tend not to write about how Imperialism is cool and good.
U know I’ve been using this video as source of motivation for the last 4 years… its real good
I watched Unicorn's 22-episode show not knowing anything about it, and not having watched any original UC episodes, and I still was shocked at how much I loved it, and how much it made me care about what was at stake. Totally recommend the show even if you've never watched Gundam.
2:34 char's thrust into the battlefield was times perfectly to the drums and beat of the song
@@chriscueva1866 you must be fun at parties...
@@mekatora_ I don’t go to parties.
No.
@@mechanomics2649 Do explain.
Beautiful. Just beautiful

This is the author/ novel writer said not me
What he is meant is after that. The federation mobile suits are the one that is being reverse back into the unassembled state. The crystallization has happened because Banagher fused with the psycho frame. (Banagher enter into the psycho frame) Then he reverses Unicorn back from being in crystallization state.

Me as a fourteen years old has watched unicorn,Battlelogue currently watching witch from mercury and turn A
And I am telling you Gundam is not that that friendly,it is realistic about war and showing us that not even kids or elderly are even spares from this, Iron blooded orphans shows us about kids being forced to be veteran Soldiers and many died because of that war, The UC Century shows us that both sides don't want this war to happen but it did because of stupid reasons such as politics or law that went too far for no reason, causing a war to break out , examples like having a war just to have the Laplace box secret in unicorn series and fighting against each other to decide whether the moonrace and the earthrace will stay in peace together shown by turn a gundam, not even the end yet, Gundam even shows us how hell and terrifying it is, especially that may even happen anytime, the innocents die over a war for nothing, fighting for nothing,Greediness for extra land and money or a capital that started a war that it shouldn't have, Gundam shows us reality of humans, it is just like the concept of war we have in the years and timelines, if you are not strong enough to watch the most depressing series, then don't watch because every UC century is showing devastating wars and character dying one by one
I totally agree with all what you wrote, Unicorn is probably the best of all series and like you it really tags into more of the human emotion and future.
i just love to watch the resume part over and over again, how u used the theme from captain ottos speech to make your own, just hits right
I actually watched the whole anime and cried in some episodes because of the tragedies that happened
Banagher was a new type before piloting the gundam btw. Apart from that great video
Yeah, that's what had me confused.
For Banagher, the way I understood it is that as a kid he was trained in a similar way to a cyber newtype to develop his potential as a Newtype. Meanwhile Riddhe awoke his potential as a newtype when he piloted the Banshee.
@@AzureZero in the Banshee with a cheat system, that "ploom" on the backpack is meant to allow an old type to pilot the MS.
Much appreciate you embodied your passion here. Great work!
Those whose souls are chained by gravity will never be able to appreciate this masterpiece.
Kameraden Oh I see. Interesting.
Kameraden And yes, I do know that UC Gundam shows have made references to both World Wars, and I think a little bit of Cold War too.
Kameraden Oh interesting.
This gave me chills to my spine at a good reason
