Here's a pretty interesting one, I think. My favorite Kirk solo ever is Outlaw Torn. It's nothing super fast or shreddy or technically impressive, some may even just call it lame wah+slide wankery, but for me it's the way it fits into the song. The way it comes out of the quiet mellow interlude and just erupts like a volcano or like a very sudden outburst of strong emotions, is so so so fn good. Outlaw Torn is also my favorite Metallica song of all-time, and from that, you might could guess that, yes, Load is my favorite Metallica album of all time.
"How good" someone is can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. There's technical skill. And then there's the ability to write catchy licks. The difficulty of playing a tune has nothing to do with its likeability by the masses. Metallica writes catchy tunes that a lot of people like (at least until St. Anger lol)......and at the end of the day, you can call it "selling out", "overrated" or whatever you want, but they've found a formula that connects with millions of people, and that's really what matters.
Overrated might be a strong term, but it is quite clear that he makes little effort anymore. If he had stayed on the path he was jn the 80's, and kept pushing to be a better player, than perhaps he would now be one of the true greats. That said, his work from the 80's provide very achievable benchmarks and milestones for aspiring players. Hard enough to learn something, but not unrealistic
Of course he is way overrated!! Kirk Hammett is a very poor guitarist. Don't get me wrong, I'm a true Metallica fan since the beginning, but Hammett's sound and sense of melody is really bad...

Interesting choice.
If your talking about the outcome, I think that is James Hetfield.
The solo in the middle is a pretty interesting use of effects.
@evanaskew6652 I'm not talking about James' outro solo. Yes, it is legendary too.
