  • Tracie Albert and her husband Myles had a harrowing 14-month journey to getting their dream home after they bought it. The couple purchased the house over a year ago, but the previous owner refused to leave, and couldn’t be forced out due to pandemic eviction restrictions. Now, the squatters have moved out, and the house is in surprisingly good shape. But the couple says they can’t imagine moving in after what they’ve been through. Myles said just driving up to the house causes “so much anxiety.” #InsideEdition

Me and my family had to deal with squatters. We rented out a trailer for a long time. The last couple seemed iffy, but at the beginning they paid. After they started doing stupid things, we decided to remove them. Soon they stopped paying rent, overused the utilities. It was a nightmare. It took us 6 months to evict them. After the sherif came, he forced them out, once he left, they returned back in. He had to be called back. They stayed at a hotel. It was a nightmare. The cost to repair was beyond what it was worth. So we decided to destroy it altogether. It was just a nightmare,

Learn the law cuz those squatters do. It's even far worse in NYC. It took my father and his lawyer over a year to finally get an entire family of squatters out of my hospitalized grandfather's home.
My grandfather was hospitalized for over a month (terminal cancer) and a family (a pregnant mother, father, and 3 children under 6 y/o) broken in (idk when) and refused to leave.
The 3 kids, the pregnant mother and the fact that it was winter (December) is what allowed the judge to sympathized and let them stay until my father went to eviction court. The people kept appealing and claiming different falsities until they were finally made to leave, over a year later and the place was trashed. And yes all of my grandfather's belongings were there when they broke in and ofc these losers stole and sold his stuff throughout the year.

Somewhat similar thing happened in my parent’s neighborhood. The homeowner across the street from us rented out her house. The dude that moved in played the electric guitar at full blast and the entire street could hear it. My parents and I all spent the entire time in our bedrooms because we could hear him from our living room at all hours of the day. I felt the most bad about that house’s left next door neighbor, an old granny that had just retired and loved gardening. Everyone kept contacting the homeowner to kick the guy out, not sure what made her finally cave. The house’s right next door neighbor was a brand new home that was worth more than a million dollars, so maybe that real estate agent threatened to sue, since noise pollution was against local ordinances. Well the homeowner arrives and the dude refuses to leave. It went on for weeks. Finally she offered him a refund for the rest of the month’s rent (which is fair, I would also expect a partial refund if I’m getting evicted). He left, the house next to it was sold, the retiree went back to gardening, and the street looks great now.

Legally since that is not their stuff they can pay for like three months of storage, put out a public notice of where the stuff is or who to contact, leave the keys possibly with a mediator or lawyer, and either the old owners pick it up or don't. If you do you diligence to try to find them and they don't show up for their stuff they can sell it or tell the storage rental lapse and let the storage place sell it.

The point of squatters rights is to reduce violence. If an owner found a squatter and decided to pull out a gun things would escalate and either the squatted or the owner or both could end up dead. They gave squatters rights so that owners would be deterred from taking matters into their own hands and let the legal system handle it for them. The only problem is the legal system is too damn slow so rather than "ok we'll get that squatter out by tomorrow for you" it's "ok we'll get that squatter out some time in the next year or two, good luck until then."

A friend of mine rented her house out, and the renter proceeded to lose his job over the pandemic and stopped paying rent. My friends for personal reasons and all have to move back into that house but was unable to drive that renter out due to the law. So for like a year and a half, the guy lived in my friend's house for free, while my friend has to rent another place, paying rent to live, and she lost every court fight because of the law protecting non-paying renter during the pandemic. In the end she had to pay the guy close to 10K for him to voluntarily move out, FROM HER HOUSE, which he has not paid a dime for a year and a half.

After five minutes the police arrived to protect the squatters. But my father opened the front door to the police. Proved he was the owner and did not know these people nor their furniture on the street.

My father had squatters living in his 1 bedroom apartment, I didn't know this until I visited him. When I got there, my father was extremely ill. He told me he let his friend stay there a couple weeks then her whole moved in living there for 4 months, and one of her children was on house arrest under that address. The place looked like a hoarders episode with black mold everywhere. Expecting to visit a couple of hours turned into a 4 day hospital visit, my father almost died. During the course of those 4 days with no change of clothes for myself since I lived a few hours away, I bought him clothes from Walmart and moved him into my home. I had him turn off all the utilities, and on the 6th day the squatters left. Before they left, I confronted the parents and the house arrest kid asking them if this is how they want to teach their children how to live? The husband threatened my father to kill him, the mother threatened my father to have some of her friends kill him, and the son threatened to have some of his friends jump him. I didn't know any of this. But yeah, I chased them out when the police couldn't do anything by turning off all the utilities, and told management they can renovate the apartment in a couple days after I cleaned out everything with a bumpster trailer. Then I told management that my father would be living with me so they could rent out the apartment. My father was in such bad shape there was no way I could allow him to live by himself anymore. 8 years later he still lives with me and I helped him get a 2014 challenger, his dream car. His is still recovering from the entire ordeal.

In my state, what they would have done is, either set up a rental contract so they could get mortgage payments until this guy figured his life out, or they could have done a legal eviction, at which point the Sheriff would have broken down the door and arrested the man. It's common here in NC, for people to set up a rental contract with the previous owners while they continue to live there until their new home is ready. Up until the pandemic, it was uncommon to just kick people out on the street when they needed more time. Now life here is weird and you get kicked out at the end of your lease just because the property was sold to someone who wants to rent the property for more money by renovating(aka painting) it.

Otherwise, the new owners should be able to go after the previous owner for fraud, his realtor, and possibly the title company for all acting in bad faith.
