Being a leftie also helps because you can put ur foot on the perfect corner for stretching to a throw from any other base or part of the feild

I would like to see tips on picking the ball out of the dirt. My 9 year old is playing first and I am not sure I am giving him the best advice on glove placement with balls in the dirt that bounce between the bag to 10 feet out. Thanks for the great videos!

Hey guys good stuff. An additional drill that incorporates a couple of your things is one we do on a regular basis with our 1st baseman. They start in a hold on position like your second drill, but as the step and shuffle a coach that is about 25 feet away and at a slight angle towards the pitchers mound tosses them the ball. They have to catch that ball and then under hand it back to the coach like they would be throwing a PFP. Once that release the ball they hustle back to the bag and then the coach throws the ball into the dirt simulating a short hop throw. We do this to give them less time to get their feet ready on returning to the bag and react to a ball in the dirt. It incorporates a "hard line drive" coming off the bag, then a PFP type underhand toss to a pitcher moving to cover first then getting back to the bag and fielding play that they have to pick the ball on a hop.
Oh... by the way... for those older coaches, dont be afraid to use a pitching machine from across the diamond and have it throw the balls into the dirt. We use a Zooka pitching machine during our practices to shoot the ball at the first baseman in the dirt and also as regular line drives to both forehand and backhand. Those with young shoulders that can throw that distance for many many throws to a team of first baseman... more power to ya!

Hey coach Justin I've been playing first base my while life always being a bigger kid just as an advice I usually wait over the bag before the ball is thrown so you can place your back foot on either side of the base once you see where the ball is going. You get Alot more range by doing that

  • @realistindenial

I like these drills. Stay quiet and be athletic.
Another alternative to holding a runner is to square your body and feet with the pitcher. This is technique is common in the MLB. It's more athletic and makes it easier readying to field the ball. You don't need to show a target with your glove either, which again is more athletic when moving into position to field the ball.
That said, there's no one way to do anything. Experiment and figure out what works best for you.

I do that with a big fat slow guy who has a short lead. If it's a jackrabbit I'm in position to take a pick off throw.
On a good pick off throw I let the ball travel as far as possible. If possible my glove is touching the runner when the ball arrives into the mit.
I'm a lefty, it sure is an advantage.

Brooke Short That doesnt mean its easy. Im a primary first baseman but I also play outfield if needed. Idk how old you are; but in 14U, its not so easy. Im a softball player but its basically the same thing. Outfield may seem easy to you, but in reality, it can be just as hard as any infield position.

  • @weesebowski8651

Keep in mind coaches that this will help with the fielder target zone and limits the chance of a wild throw! I’ve tried this technique with 6-8th graders and helps with scenario play! There’s no crying in baseball...

What if you go to a school with 40 kids in the high school and your baseball coach doesn’t know a thing about baseball and he never gives you any signals. Should I make my own signs to the pitcher? Or confront my coach that he should start giving me signals when to move on and off of the base.

How should your back foot be on the bag? Different coaches are saying different things. One is saying to have the ball of your foot on the bag. Another coach is saying have your foot on the bag by being parallel well on the bag. Kind of how you did it in the video.

  • @Alczervik
    @Alczervik 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I was always told to have my heels on the bag and then decide how to stride and with whichever foot best suits the throw. Is this inaccurate, as I am coaching now? I see you instructing players to go into backhand on throws to the right. Thanks in advance for feedback

Just keep your eyes on the ball to the glove and don't turn your head. All positions have to deal with sudden unexpected bounces.

Remember...stay below the ball even on wilder throws.
Also, check the ground...on throws in the dirt on soft ground the ball will pop up a little more than they do on a full sand field.

Donovan Black keep your chest pointed at the pitcher. If you can throw your body in the path of the ball with your chest pointed at pitcher, knees on the ground, glove between your legs head down. Also if you can watch college level baseball. A lot of the the pros have bad habits

They used to stick the fat old guy at first, but that is not really the case anymore. It kind of is, but not so much anymore. I played first base all through Little League and High school and I was pretty good at digging out bad throws. I still think it's the greatest position to play.
