As an example of how bad it can get. As a samurai, shoha's animation can be LONGER than Midare's cast (depending on server connection) with the damage coming out at the end of the animation. And if the target moves away at any point during that long animation or you lose LoS (which can happen when people run behind walls or even worse by running behind you if the server is acting wonky) the skill is cancelled with no damage coming out. That's how bad it can be.

It’s so bad because the “polling rate” or tick rate of the game engine’s netcode interacting with the servers is so slow compared to other games with much more snappy and responsive PvP like WoW and LoL.
In WoW if you kidney shot it happened immediately. Not in XIV though and that’s the issue.

EDIT: PvP since the PvE hotbar was removed has really improved, the first rework was terrible but its really good currently (DK & WHM op :s)
I started & finished my very first season of The Feast and it took me a little over 370 matches to get diamond.
The experience as melee dps feels like getting a good scratch ticket in the Gold Saucer.
If the tank doesn't stun on time or the healer doesn't Repose (sleep) there will almost always be no kill.
I also noticed that melees get blamed a metric shit ton and quick chat does not remove any toxicity the normal chat would have.
Nobody plays peak performance all the time but new players and up getting shafted as melees, tanks or healers.
As melee you are "responsible" for the countdown from what people told me and some teammates do a simple "Hello." (wtf is this SE) to tell you that their burst is ready,
sometimes however (honestly its 50/50) people DEMAND that you spam the shit out of countdown even when you have nothing ready, they will make sure you know that they are pissed for not seeing a number counting down by spaming "HELLO." a billion times IMMEDIATLY when that magic number is gone form the current target.
to make matters worse some will straight up ignore legitimate calls and start their own countdowns etc.
Deaths get the usual PvP treatment with a quick flame and blame.
Afk also happens but I can't even blame them when the game is beyond lost.
Solo queue has win trades as well so when a healer at the last minute suddenly lets everyone drop, it is not THAT rare at higher elo like mid/high plat and onwards.
What is really rare is terrible ranged DPS, I had like 3 cases that I actually noticed other than focus targets being ignored and thats it.
The main issue is that if you are a PvP sprout you get NOTHING in terms of information, PvP is dead because most people don't want to enter an already toxic enviroment and get the full force of that by not knowing whats going on with some missing details on the meta and so forth on top of it.
It took almost 250 matches until I had a grasp on everything and at that point I already brute forced my way to plat (overshooting my orginal goal of gold).
if you are lucky, someone will be mad enough to /tell you and at that point your mental will decide wether you remain calm and get some infromation out of him or straight up report some of the more colorful /tells you get.
I could go on and on but I'm struggling to structure this nicely to make sure I don't miss some major details etc... you should get the gist of it tho.
TL;DR Yes PvP has toxic sweaty andies but just play Ranged DPS and pray to rng for a good team, you get more points than you lose anyways.
This post was made by a salty Monk that is baffled by the fact that PvP Monk makes more sense than PvE Monk.

Been a main PvP player for over 15 years until I landed on ffxiv 2 years ago. In my opinion PvP in ff is terrible. Clunky combat, the server ticks screw you over, awful crown control, and I despise target combat but that depends on personal taste. On top of all that put bad moderation, eternal que times, and cheaters. I go there just for the good looking rewards. I only agree with Zepla on saying that nobody should tell others to not try pvp because it is bad. Everyone should make their own opinions, but if I truly believe the pvp is trash, I will say it is trash in hope that the devs improve it at some point. It's funny. They actually tried nerfing healers in PvP to balance things out, but when they did, healers would always lose in PvP confrontations, even in 1v1. It even got to the point where if you wanted to seriously PvP, you either wouldn't go healer, or you'd stay far in the back so you wouldn't give the enemy free kills. But when they rebuffed healers again, they became broken once more. As it is, I think they need to rethink the entire PvP system.

Being upset about losing is fine, but if you bring it up in chat than that’s just projecting and becomes toxic in consequence to the players still having fun while losing. Just like you shouldnt encourage breaking your controller over dark souls. If a game is making you upset (even a team-based game) and you feel the need for everyone to witness it, or to react emotionally, that’s a personal problem. I reported about 90 of my 300 matches in season 19 and square has taken 0 action against the win traders i ran into. I play rival wings as much as possible but it isn't as popular and probably won't find any matches unless it's a Saturday when specific group of people play it. Frontlines is terrible in execution, but cool on paper. It's cool that we have 3 factions duking it out, but 33% probability of winning really sucks. Especially if you get match in Failstrome with people doing Frontline roulette and don't have a sense of team work and do their own thing. Or if your faction is in the lead, the other two factions just gang bang you and the team finishes last.

One thing I had to get use to from WoW is not being able to just pop all my heals or resistance buff skills that don't share a cd to try and escape death. As for how it feels to play, you gotta learn attack animations and when damage actually land on the target. Is it a long or short animation? Does the damage register at the beginning or end of the animation? Learn to burst down targets and then finish them off with Smite, if you play as Melee DPS that is. Just doing the normal GCDs is not gonna cut it.

Also, Asmon's take on skilled people driving away other players is a problem in many PvP games. Trials of Osiris in Destiny 2 has a huge problem due to the skill gap. The way its currently designed, its very inaccessible for most people and the matchmaking loves putting bad players vs multiple flawless teams due to that design. This lead to a lot of lower skilled players leaving, followed by average and even good players. Eventually all that's left is the few top tier players and the mode is on life support.

In the olden days of PVP (2013-2014), it was a lawless madhouse and you could do things like play a Marauder (not Warrior) with a bunch of cross-class Dragoon cooldowns and annihilate people. For a while Summoners could rez so it was like fighting an endless zombie army, stuff like that. Also not only did gear matter there was PVP-specific gear, and if you had it you would generally destroy people without it. I understand what Asmon's saying about the ARR vs. HW voice acting. There are a lot of accents in FFXIV that American players might not be familiar with. They are real accents of course but since they are not too common in other media they feel fresh and unique in this fantasy setting. Often these voices will straight up improve a cutscene that would otherwise feel very "anime". I've got good news for Asmon or other players who are still doing HW though because these accents are not gone from the game, there will be a lot of new characters who will have accents like that, they are just more consistent with things like characters from same region having similar accents and stuff starting with HW.

GW2 and ESO have the best looking and most player-involved/responsive gameplay for pvp I think. There are so many aspects of the gameplay that must be solely dictated by what the player is doing with their keyboard and how actually skilled they are in doing that. One thing I'm upset about when pvping in Lost Ark is that its very non-skill based, like they don't have a responsive dodge system, the player control of the character is slow, and the AOE CC with large diameter is nearly impossible to avoid with the clunky way your character moves. Also that makes it too easy to become chain CCd and stunlocked without a CC break or a diminishing return of CC with immunity.

done frontline regularly and tried the others... and not impressed... i would feel better doing PvP if there was actual goals and strategies... these just feel like scrambling skirmishes where you just die over and over again. There's really no incentive to get better at it. I really really hope that SE brings out something good and makes people want to play pvp.

I hate frontline if I could afk then leave I would. There is nothing more frustrating than some random opponent running into your whole squad of two full parties IF NOT THE WHOLE RAID and just survive. How. Why. What's happening.
Feast is awesome tho. More clear more concise

They should disable broken skills in PVP and add new skills to replace them. PvP exclusive skills should replace broken regular skills. They could even have alternate versions of the same skill with different numbers. Maybe every job should have a pvp mode to it.

honestly I've tried pvp, really only for wondrous tails it takes some getting used to, i got dropped into a game with a different abilities bar than my normal layout with multiple people on mounts all rushing off in a particular direction with no info or nothing to tell me what to do, fortunately i got used to it pretty fast but it should have some sort of test or training mode for new players or new pvp players as its fairly confusing as to whats happening

With how small and tight the current PvP community is reaching top 100 is fairly reasonable as long as you play consistently. it being so tight nit also tends to be a massive problem though as if you get to a season late you basically dont get to play at all because theres pretty much no one at those lower ranks to match you with anymore.
I am excited for Endwalker PvP changes though. They mentioned they have a new smaller scale mode in the works with entirely new balancing to focus on self sufficiency and objectives rather than what it is now where 90% of if you win or not comes down to how much of a god your healer is.
The larger PvP Modes also have a problem with the multi alliance combat on Frontlines in both server update speeds as well as how the game handles culling and a horde of players immediately being on top of you with no indication or just some QoL issues in targeting.
PvP also has the issue that because its such a small community it basically has no larger coverage and because of that there are next to no up to date guides available for the modes and it makes easing yourself into PvP nearly impossible for a new player whos interesting in dipping their toes into the pool.

They have attempted to revamp it a few times, specifically with skills, but it hasn't worked out so far. They used to have other maps and modes that they have removed to condense it down to concentrate the player base to reduce the queues. There used to be a 8v8 mode that I liked the most of all the modes I have every played. It and others have disappeared because, and where the pvp is dead saying comes from, is if you queue outside of a specific times, the queues could be 4 hours or more. I know people wonder why someone would stay in queue that long, but usually it was because I legit forgot I was in queue while I did other things. Unfortunately, I have seen tons of cheating and throwing matches on my server in the feast. Cancelling limits on characters that they weren't even targeting is one of the most obvious ones. I have personally enjoyed pvp and am glad they are planning on working on it in Endwalker. I currently avoid the feast because of the messes I have seen, but I do enjoy the other modes. Zepla is right about needing a dedicated pvp team. It would benefit so much from it. Oh and Revival Discord does try to help new players and answer questions, it's awesome.

I agree on the unpopular hot take that ARR voices were better. In ARR you didn't actually ever think about the voices, you just paid attention to the words and actual story being told. HW voices changed to where it seemed like everyone was trying to have the most unique voice possible and it became distracting, especially yshtola and thancred.

FF14 pvp still has issues, but it's significantly better than it used to be. Personally, I think Healers are still a bit too strong in pvp, but that's a hard bit of balance to hit.
