One correction to what Alex said: the main reason for Square's rejection of mods is not anything to do with NSFW content, regardless of what gets modded with those or not. The *main* reason is Japan and their local laws about third party software. They are very strict about it to the point where Square could be held liable if they were to be found of "promoting" mods in any capacity. That is the reason why intellectual property is such a big deal there to begin with, you can see it on how strict they are about console manipulation, like with Nintendo and Sony. Zepla actually did a video about this (forgot the name) and this all comes from Yoshi-P himself, so this is not speculation or hearsay. I doubt they care about NSFW stuff considering... well, I mean, just look as Asmongold here and the people around him, lmao.
And that is basically why they make little distinction between an ACT, a nude mod or even an upscale mod. At the end of the day, all of it is third-party software, so they HAVE to disavow all of it. They have their hands tied on this.

People seems to not understand this for some reason. As long as SE rejects modding, nothing will happen.
They do not care about any modding whatsoever. They HAVE to take action if you get ''reported'' for it due to their own rules, but they will never go out of their way and say ''ok FF is done with modding''.

    • @Draeckon
      @Draeckon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +57

@Jay Bee You're naive. They have to pretend they care because of legality issues, both the ones mentioned above concerning third-party software, but also the potential damage to the brand of the game if NSFW mods in particular get out of hand. If such things become too strongly associated with the game and/or negatively impact other players' experience, it may cause officials to question if FF14's game rating is accurate, and some countries have very strict laws about games with sexual content - as in, some of them flat out ban it. The devs _have_ to at least give lip-service to discouraging people from using mods, but as long as the people using them are reasonable and don't overtly advertise it or attach the FF14 logo or brand name to what they're doing, then there's no need for them to take any overt or strict action about it. As long as they have plausible deniability, they can overlook it - but it relies on the people using mods to avoid being stupid about it... which is why I'm fairly sure that it's one day going to come crashing down and SE will have to crack down, either because some people are too stupid to control themselves or because bad actors will deliberately sabotage it.

Mods have always been, don’t ask, don’t tell policy. Like SE knows about it. But because it doesn’t affect gameplay or give any kind of unfair advantage they more or less turned a blind eye. However, if you get reported for somethings they do have to investigate and people have been banned/suspended for them.

The modding community keeps everything on brand and very much respects the system that they have set up. That's wholesome in a way that I've not seen in many other communities when it comes to modding and they have a lot that caters to everyone's needs and interests which is Way more than I can say about a lot of other video games modding communities.

One thing that didn't get brought up but is a huge feature of the modding community is that they tend to resolve visual issues in the game WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY before the dev team does it officially. One example is feet without sandals. If you remove your shoes, your character has sandals on. The dev team has been asked in the past if there would be a way to have a barefooted option, and they said that it would be very difficult given that the sandals add a bit of height to the model, alter the geometry of feet because toes aren't rendered at all, just textured, etc. Anyway, within like a month of that statement, there were already mods out for barefooted models that fixed the issue in its entirety, and they've been around for literal years now while the official game refuses to approach a solution. While there are definitely a billion different sexual mods, there are also a large number of cosmetic mods, texture upgrades, upscales, etc. that just improve the graphical quality of life without veering into what some might deem "weird" territory. Have you always wanted a character with cascading, curled hair? Mods can do that. Want your Au Ra tail to be twice as long? Easy with mods. Want your Miqo'te tail wrapped in jewelry and gemstones? Sure thing!

You don't have to ERP if you RP. You don't have to live in a sex dungeon if you just want to ERP. You can go to a club and dance without strippers. You can give your male char cool facial hair without bothering with everyone's HD tits. @@DarkKeybladeMaster23 Putting a spotlight on anything, like what's been done here by a popular streamer who just joined the ffxiv community as a whole (and SE community team is definitely watching), will force SE to reevaluate their approach to these things and likely cause them to come down harder over it.
The person who agreed to do this interview is an idiot, putting their own hobby into a precarious situation where it may become much more difficult to continue doing.

    "This is what modders do"
No. Just because you mod your game does NOT mean you are doing it because Erotic Role Playing. At all.

For some reason Asmon's character rimds me of old Jesus portraits of being surrounded by children and people. I know he is in no way shape or form Jesus but it just came to me "his like jesus with all of those people around him and beard"

Jesus famously hung out with prostitutes and tax collectors and was hated by the "mainstream" elitists of his time.
      A lot of similarities here.

    Grey area = Don't ask Don't tell
if SE really wants to they can tell when your files are modded.
As long as you aren't advertising/exploiting/cheating they typically don't care.
It's mainly in the ToS so they can ban people on an as needed basis.

I can totally see people stalking in FF.
I've been a Bunny for a week now with a crop-top, short skirt and thighboots, chilling in Limsa, sitting in queue and multiple people have stood in front of me, expressing, that Bunnygirls are hot, most don't say anything. My favourites are those, that sit down right beside you, even though there is plenty of space on the bench.
