I've been a fan of the tilting trike principle since seeing the Onya Cycles Front-End Loader concept years and years ago. It looked like a BMX with three wheels - really sparked my interest. This idea - longer and more useful as a cargo bike - is absolutely brilliant. I would love to see you sell the concept and make you rich. It would be well deserved (and I might buy one).

5:09 I'm not sure about putting the battery under the frame, there's a reason why most are installed on the vertical downtube. You want to keep it away from impact and water ingress.😊

Really love your tilting trike project, and seeing it evolving is each time a pleasure. This time I was even more thrilled, so you are using the same kit I used on my bike too. I also like this kit, but for me, there is another downside you didn't pointed : there is no light included, and no way to connect one on the controller. it could be an option, but yose didn't make this choice. There should be a tricky way to do it, I made some research, but didnt find THE solution. Maybe a future challenge for you ? ;) (me crossing fingers you could take the challenge ;) )

excellent and interesting video. Did you consider putting the motorized wheel on the front? When i first saw the hubs i thought they were already motor hubs. It would be the first sports cargo trike :) Also looking forward to the opensource project files.

@@pedro-neves with two motors, one for each front wheel (for example from a used hoverboard that you drill for spokes) you do not need a differential, just two e-bike motor controllers. It would give you single side axle wheels and possibility to do regen braking because they have now freewheel. For mechanical front brakes it would be more complicated because there are no disc-brake mounting holes.
@@Acamperfull, I do like the idea of repurposing two hoverboard motors;) And I also agree that a final product should have regen braking. You save on brakes and gain on energy. There are many possibilities. The most common these days seems to be the mid-drive. I'm actually considering developing a mid-drive with gears. But I haven't truly decided. So, thank you for adding a suggestion. I truly appreciate it!
@@Acamperfull This is a good idea, and I think there is also a solution to avoid using two controllers : connecting the two motors inline, the power should equilibrates between the two motors. With a 48v battery, and two 24v motors for example. (or 72 to use two 36v motors).
@@brunoheron8917 Hoverboard motors are 36V brushless DC motors and as the motors will not be kept in sync with eachother you really need one BLDC controller per motor but are not hard to find or an expensive part and they can share the input, so just one dashboard, PAS-sensor/ throttle, brake sensor and battery is needed.

I'd appreciate a catch-up/review video where you talk through what skills/tools you need, how the design has developed, a brief review of comps to different styles, and where you want to take the design. Your trike-ecargo bike is very interesting. The weight distributed over three wheels is logical and the width of the vehicle is not compromised by it's widest point (the cargo). I have been thinking of building an eCargo bike (due to off the shelf solutions being expensive) and now I have to rethink the solution as your solution (though a little more complex) has many compelling arguments that make it much better than off the shelf solutions!

Pretty cool episode. I like the ev charging adapter. You might want to consider foul weather operation with your ebike equipment installation. The battery pack and motor controller location might tend to unfavorably collect water if the trike is operated in the rain (4:50). Similarly, the 3 connectors, 6:24, might tend to take on any liquid, including rain water, when oriented like this. It appears a larger shroud is facing upward like a funnel on at least two of the connectors. Anyway, just things to consider. I realize you're sharing your first-off prototype, and nicely done.

Good point. This kit is easier to adapt in a bike that you already have. Little modifications are required. A motor in the crank may be harder to assemble but with some benefits like having torque sensor. In my opinion, both systems have advantages in different situations.
16:24 I just read an article about charging and battery life and the conclusion is that 2000hz pulse current charging adds as much as 38% to battery life. It's discussed on a subreddit called batteries if you're interested. 😊

Battery, cables, controllers, rear wheel, anything else, all added up to? Also, what was the approximate charging time to charge your battery with the public charging station? Time to charge - This is a 13Ah battery and the charger is able to output 2A. So, about 7h for a full charge, considering that the last bit is charged slower to save the battery life. But, I will charge from one bar to full and let you know the time when I get back to you on the mass. The flower was milled in the windmill. Thought, the mill has been modernized. To my understanding, it can use wind, but it's hybrid with electric motor. They keep it as original a possible as this is a national monument. My friend makes delicious sower dough loafs (about 500 g per loaf). Best bread in Amsterdam;) My Assistant / Girlfriend is always very happy when her work is noticed;) THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Cheers!

I know this is a low power motor, but those drop outs are *very* thin and a motor can chew them right up. You should install a torque arm to protect your bike, especially as it's a custom build!
@@pedro-nevesconsider a intergraded wheel motor , A wide fat bike wheel will give more stability, traction and shock absorbersion . And you could even get the wheel in a 16 or 17" so you can fit heavy duty moped tires on it , and those usually come with much hevy duty brake standard, 3 bolt pattern. ✌️

Look's beautiful! Have to go back to #6 though. The steering ratio 1 to 1,5, maybe I'm wrong but have you thought of going back to 1 to 1. It looked a little bit hard to keep in a straight line. Or is it some effect of the handling of this specific construction which I know nothing about. It would be safer if battery was inside frame triangle, not outside. It may be damaged by hitting stone or curb. Also I think mid drive would be better for cargo bike, better hill climbing capabilities.
Your trike project is wonderful and I'm happy to see any updates! The conversion is also great and really interesting to see, as I'm also elecrifying my Bullitt cargo bike in a couple of days. However I feel that the battery placement is really bad, as it will be catching all the watter from both the road and dripping down from the frame. I do not trust these battery cases at all to be so completely waterproof! Batteries usually don't come on the underside of a bike because it gets very wet and muddy. Which could open a seal or corrode the contacts. Take care!
Some early production E bikes had their battery also on the underside. I clean the bikes in my family and one of it is such a bike. That's where my experience and concern comes from. But you can ride like that for a while, it won't make much problems in a short term. Love your dedication for your bike!
You got a lot of distance on a single charge, even using high levels of assistance, much better than my 24kg e-bike (36v, 10.4 Ah). Are the voltage and capacity of your battery the same as in the product link, ie 36v and 13Ah? Thanks.
Good catch! In Europe, there are some Japanese car manufacturers such as Nissan and Mitsubishi that sold many cars with type-1 inlet. For this reason, it became common to have adapters with type-2 in the charging station side and type-1 in the car side.
its madness the lack of ebike charging infrastructure , i keep telling my local council how it would draw in ebike tourists . i went a home built trailer route for ebike transport , was an easier option for me using an old fish crate and two old bike wheels and a bitto welding . i find carrying weight going downhill in the wet you need quite a good grippy front tyre to avoid washouts , i am thinking of trailer brakes but not found a hassle free way yet . Personally an anecdotally , illegal or not, everyone prefers throttle assist to pedal assist .
that thread mounting for the battery looks a little sketch. You want at least a bolt diameter of thread length engagement for reasonable strength. you can try loops around the tube too? or welding on nuts, iunno.
The tube wall thickness is 2 mm so, not a lot of thread, as you point out. I think I'll add some straps to make sure the battery doesn't fall and observe if the threads are degrading over time. Cheers!
@@pedro-neves You can also look into riv-nuts, or rivet nuts. That could be a more durable solution to your battery mounting problem. Ideally though, you'd want to braze/weld diamond/square reinforcement points where the bolts penetrate the frame, like water bottle mounts. That's for you in the future though as your tools and skill improve and grow!!!!
IDK if the electric bike laws are the same in the Netherlands as they are in the UK, but here a tricycle can have 350 watts to allow for the extra weight. (Still 250 watts for bicycles)

Hey, my battery does not get hot at all. You should be worried if your battery gets hot. I advise you contact the manufacturer and not use it anymore. One question - Does the charger light ever get green?

@@onthepegs, some extra info from the battery's manual: - Working charging temperature until 45 degC. - If the light does not become green until 10 hours, stop charging. In any case, if you feel it's not safe, I suggest not using it. It's not worth to risk your safety.

You forgot the torque arms. Good luck 😂. And I think thump throttle for walk assist (3-5)kmh is legal. It is in Germany. I think in other countries too.
That's not what I mean, I talk about tourqe arms. Those are to support the increased mechanical stress which the elektric motor adds to the frame. Do a research or get a maybe not so happy ending with your construction. TOURQE ARMS!!
@@christianklasen640 thank you for the clarification. This motor can produce a maximum of 40 Nm. With a typical ratio of crank to freewheel, most humans can produce much more than that with the pedals, and for this reason I concluded that the frame doesn't need torque arms because of this motor.
Your saddle should be higher, you can't straighten your legs enough, therefore losing energy and efficiency from your end. It would be even easier for you to pedal if your saddle was at the correct height. This coming from a mountain biker who's been riding for 7 years.

you migt already know that a ebike kit like this in the Netherlands is iligal it has to be pedel asist and not a trotle lik you have here becos its iligal anyway i recomend getting the strongest motor that you can find the 250 watt limit is a bit weak i find i got a 32Ah 60v batery powering mine and i get about 60km out of it at full power at 450 watts wich is great iligal but great thanks for the eve charging station tip

try antipuncture tape for tires :) I never had flat tire since installed them
On my bike I use a thing called "tannus armour" and I never had a flat again. The tape is also interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Look's beautiful! Have to go back to #6 though. The steering ratio 1 to 1,5, maybe I'm wrong but have you thought of going back to 1 to 1. It looked a little bit hard to keep in a straight line. Or is it some effect of the handling of this specific construction which I know nothing about. I'm sure you can live with some compromises, but you have just invited us to dig in to the small details.

Thank you so much! I do appreciate you digging in to the small details! I'm not 100% sure that I prefer the more sensitive steering ratio. After my tests, I continued with this configuration, but it is a valid point that you're making. I should set to 1:1 for a long time and see how it feels;)

It would be safer if battery was inside frame triangle, not outside. It may be damaged by hitting stone or curb. Also I think mid drive would be better for cargo bike, better hill climbing capabilities.

Your trike project is wonderful and I'm happy to see any updates! The conversion is also great and really interesting to see, as I'm also elecrifying my Bullitt cargo bike in a couple of days.
However I feel that the battery placement is really bad, as it will be catching all the watter from both the road and dripping down from the frame. I do not trust these battery cases at all to be so completely waterproof! Batteries usually don't come on the underside of a bike because it gets very wet and muddy. Which could open a seal or corrode the contacts. Take care!

Some early production E bikes had their battery also on the underside. I clean the bikes in my family and one of it is such a bike. That's where my experience and concern comes from. But you can ride like that for a while, it won't make much problems in a short term.

You got a lot of distance on a single charge, even using high levels of assistance, much better than my 24kg e-bike (36v, 10.4 Ah).
Are the voltage and capacity of your battery the same as in the product link, ie 36v and 13Ah?

Hi, yes, I used the kit in the link with 36V, 13Ah. I did get a very decent distance. Keep in mind that the kit was brand new.

Good catch! In Europe, there are some Japanese car manufacturers such as Nissan and Mitsubishi that sold many cars with type-1 inlet. For this reason, it became common to have adapters with type-2 in the charging station side and type-1 in the car side.

its madness the lack of ebike charging infrastructure , i keep telling my local council how it would draw in ebike tourists . i went a home built trailer route for ebike transport , was an easier option for me using an old fish crate and two old bike wheels and a bitto welding . i find carrying weight going downhill in the wet you need quite a good grippy front tyre to avoid washouts , i am thinking of trailer brakes but not found a hassle free way yet . Personally an anecdotally , illegal or not, everyone prefers throttle assist to pedal assist .

that thread mounting for the battery looks a little sketch. You want at least a bolt diameter of thread length engagement for reasonable strength. you can try loops around the tube too? or welding on nuts, iunno.
The tube wall thickness is 2 mm so, not a lot of thread, as you point out. I think I'll add some straps to make sure the battery doesn't fall and observe if the threads are degrading over time.

@@pedro-neves You can also look into riv-nuts, or rivet nuts. That could be a more durable solution to your battery mounting problem.
Ideally though, you'd want to braze/weld diamond/square reinforcement points where the bolts penetrate the frame, like water bottle mounts. That's for you in the future though as your tools and skill improve and grow!!!!

IDK if the electric bike laws are the same in the Netherlands as they are in the UK, but here a tricycle can have 350 watts to allow for the extra weight. (Still 250 watts for bicycles)

You should be worried if your battery gets hot. I advise you contact the manufacturer and not use it anymore.
One question - Does the charger light ever get green?
@@pedro-neves Yes, it gets green, the battery will be fully loaded. I contacted the seller (geekbuying) and you can guess their reply... :) something like "all is good, it is CE certified" Thanks for nothing, then! I guess. :) At least if my house burns down the insurance will buy me a new one. :)
@@onthepegs, some extra info from the battery's manual:
- Working charging temperature until 45 degC.
- If the light does not become green until 10 hours, stop charging.
In any case, if you feel it's not safe, I suggest not using it. It's not worth to risk your safety.

You forgot the torque arms. Good luck 😂. And I think thump throttle for walk assist (3-5)kmh is legal. It is in Germany. I think in other countries too.

That's not what I mean, I talk about tourqe arms. Those are to support the increased mechanical stress which the elektric motor adds to the frame. Do a research or get a maybe not so happy ending with your construction. TOURQE ARMS!!

This motor can produce a maximum of 40 Nm. With a typical ratio of crank to freewheel, most humans can produce much more than that with the pedals, and for this reason I concluded that the frame doesn't need torque arms because of this motor.
You may want to use zipties rather than tape.
Zipties are better for installing and removing, for sure. Somehow, I just love that fabric tape;)
One of the reasons why it's slightly twitchy is the difference between the front and back tires.
Your saddle should be higher, you can't straighten your legs enough, therefore losing energy and efficiency from your end. It would be even easier for you to pedal if your saddle was at the correct height. This coming from a mountain biker who's been riding for 7 years.
Hi, I fully agree! The saddle should be high enough so that the legs almost stretch in the furthest position. And you are right - I should show the saddle in the right position to influence others to regulate their equipment correctly. Will have it in mind for next time.

Ah, that would also explain the wobble in the front left wheel. Initially I thought the alignment of that wheel was off.

you migt already know that a ebike kit like this in the Netherlands is iligal it has to be pedel asist and not a trotle lik you have here
becos its iligal anyway i recomend getting the strongest motor that you can find the 250 watt limit is a bit weak i find
i got a 32Ah 60v batery powering mine and i get about 60km out of it at full power at 450 watts wich is great iligal but great

Hi, I forgot to explain that the thumb throttle only takes it to max 6 km/h. I believe this is inline with European regulation.
Charging on the boat would be handy.

What type of throttle do they what you to have ? The roll throttle like on a motorcycle seems like overkill.
