    Regarding the CRF 300 Rally vs KTM 390 Adventure, I test rode both, albeit only on the road. I did find a small parking lot that was unpaved and full of potholes near a construction site, but don't tell the Honda dealer that ^_^". Honda Rally felt ergonomically great for my 175cm stature and about 78cm inseam. I felt relaxed sitting on it. The handlebars are a bit low when standing up, but some bar risers will fix that easily. The tank is quite wide and my legs were a bit split apart. Power-wise, its not bad. It won't shake your world, but it gets you from A to B in decent comfort. The seat is wider than the usual dirt bike type seat, so kudos there. First gear is SHORT, which I imagine is great for off-road, but annoying in the city. Big drawback is that suspension is soft. It may be long, but with the stock springs it just slumps down when you sit on it (I weigh 85kg). KTM 390 Adventure felt a bit cramped, even for me. It has more of a naked bike feel, than a dirt bike. Perhaps some lowered pegs and bar risers will fix that. I do like the wide handlebars and the fact that it is a 26"/22" bar stock with ACTUAL handguards and not flappy elephant ears made from chocolate like on the Honda. The seat is wide and comfy and its quite high at 855mm. Suspension feels a lot firmer and brakes are awesome. Also the main thing I felt when riding the KTM is that I was having FUN. That power is just awesome, it is very zippy and way more powerful than the Honda. Also I love the engine, it felt very smooth, the smoothest single cylinder I ever rode. I know it has a counter balanced crank shaft so that might be the reason. Surprisingly, it doesn't have a lot of low down torque, it is a lot happier after 3-4000 revs. But man, I just wanted to blast off with a wheelie at absolutely every traffic light. I hit 80 km/h in third gear and it still had plenty of grunt to go. And now, to make matters even more undecisive, I currently own an old 2002 DRZ 400 E, which is amazing in the dirt, but quite medieval on the road. I had it for almost a year now, I honestly I don't really do crazy technical off-road riding. Some dirt roads over hills, with the occasional ruts (I avoid mud like the plague) and the worst stuff I ever rode were some fairly steep rocky climbs, but they were short sections. So, I'm kind of leaning on the KTM. I also own a first gen VStrom and my plan for next year is to get rid of both and buy a brand new unicorn bike. Hope this long comment helps others that are just as indecisive as I am. Cheers :) !

      I went with the KTM 390 Adventure and can not be happier, Have around 4,000 KM on it so far mostly black top and gravel and dirt roads, as I still waiting for the better KTM skid plate, to many people breaking the stock one.

      Based. As Solid said - it depends. See, I live in crazy country where it's illegal to enter wilderness/forested areas with motorized vehicles. In my case 300 Rally or any dualsport is close to useless. You are basically left with few artificial courses or risk of getting in trouble if you want to ride to full potential. However we have a fair amount of unpaved/dirt roads to explore. 390 Adventure is a fair trade in this circumstances. Truth is, there's probably better value in 300 Rally. But this bike is bare bones and boring as any Honda in this price range. While at least 390 got interesting tech and modern looks or the other way around, fits either way. In this day and age if someone can afford a hobby bike, shouldn't be scared to go by heart. You don't like it, sell/trade it and get the other one. If someone is struggling with fear of loosing money, he than should really set his priorities right or choose a cheaper hobby.

      I’ve owned both. Your out of your mind if you think a 300 is even in the same class of bike. I had mine for a year it was the worst bike I’ve ever owned in 30+ years of riding. It’s a dirt bike with no power. It struggles to maintain 45 mph on a hill with a head wind. Literally pinned out on a big hill and it couldn’t maintain 40-45mph. Waste your money if you want people.

    I went with the KTM 390 Adventure, form what I have seen as long as you want to go at a slower pace, it will take you almost any where the other bikes will, only have 4,000 Km on mine so far mostly on black top and gravel and dirt roads, but some of the dirt roads have 2' of grass growing up the center and are full of large pot holes. As soon as I get the up grade bash plate from KTM will be hitting some trails. To see what the KTM 390 Adventure can do , watch the video KTM 390 Adventure VS Royal Enfield Himalayan and KTM 390 Adventure vs KTM 790 Adventure R at the end of the video they say the KTM 390 will go any were the 790 will but at a much slower pace, And 90% of the people I know will not be racing there ADV bikes off road. That is what trail bikes and duel sports are for. That is why I also have a DR650 with a 20 liter gas tank in my stable, great for off road, at the speeds I go. ( Between 40 Km to 60 Km when off road or bad dirt roads.)

    I now have the upgraded KTM skid plate on the 390 Adventure and have been taking it on some pretty rough roads more like trails than roads full of very large pot holes and deep ruts from 6" to 12 " deep, hitting some sand and mud and the KTM 390 Adventure is taking it all in stride. I do take it slow between 60 and 70 Km on the rough stuff, and hitting 80 Km on the better gravel and dirt. I am 5' 9" and 190 lb. and have the GVI Trekker 33/64 liter hard bags on it and the suspension is doing great, at the speeds I travel. I have been leaving the traction control and ABS on road setting , and so far no problems, As long as you do not want to race the KTM 390 Adventure will go almost any where, For me when the going gets rough 60 to 70 Km is plenty fast enough. and smooth gravel and dirt roads will handle 80 to 90 Km no problem I have just over 6,500 km on it now and am loving it. Also the Dunlop TrailMax Mission tire are doing great after 6,500 Km rear tire only down 1 mm, ( 1/32" ) and the new tread depth is 10 mm so looking to get a lot of life out of them. front tire not showing any ware at all. As long as you do not want to race off road the KTM is the way to go. Getting 3.3 liters per 100 km that is over 400 Km per tank of gas, witch is pretty good for a 14.5 liter gas tank, If I could change any thing on this bike would be going to a 18 liter gas tank. I also have had more people coming up to me and saying how they like the look of the bike, than any other bike I have had. I have the orange which I like much more than the white, You should get out and try the KTM 390 Adventure off road, you will be surprised what this bike can go through. just put the better skid plate on and keep the speed with in reason. Has not got the suspension for racing, it is not meant for racing, but great for slower off road.

    There should be plenty of stock very quiet CRF450L exhausts for next to free for you to bolt onto your DRZ if you don't mind the extra 7 of the catalytic converter. Try that, swap the bars and the grips before taking the big step down to a 300L. Taller bars with less sweep and new grips can really change the feel of the bike.

On the bright side either bike will be great 👍 If you have off road experience and are confident the T7 is great, or your just doing dirt roads and twin track as a beginner. The tall guy looking for more power with less weight might be better served off road by the Husky 501 than the 701. Not that the 701 is a bad bike, just a lot closer to the T7 he already has. The 501 can be easily uncorked to 45-50 hp, and weighs less than a WR (250 dry vs 295 wet). This comes with cost, and maintenance, but anyone looking to add a bike vs replace his existing ride probably has room in the budget for that.
    As standard mods he will need to put new springs and different oil &/or valving in his suspension. The standard setup for almost every bike is ideal for someone about 5'10"ish and 170 pounds. At 6'4" he will regularly bottom out every bike's stock suspension on very small potholes, whoops, etc. He probably should start with a professional rework of his T7 suspension for about $1,000 USD, and then decide if he really needs another bike at all.
    Just my 2 cents... Peace!

    Hi Solid, I am deliberating between buying the CRF 300l to the Suzuki DR650. I am kind of a new rider since until now I had a scooter (Honda pcx125). I want to get into adventure and off-road riding. I live in the city and the bike will be my main transportation, every journey to nature will require a lot of freeway riding. My main concerns with the DR are that it is not that modern and will require a lot of work and cash to upgrade. Also, the lack of ABS or safety features is a concern. With the CRF my concern is about speed, that I will not be able to drive on 110/120 KPH freeways for 1 to 2 hours stretches. I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

    Awesome! Thank you! So yeah -- funny name. I used to live in Japan, so I use katakana for a bit of privacy cloaking. Bit silly really. Feel free to call me Jens, with the J pronounced Polishly...
    ok -- CRF it will be then... Probably... I only started riding in September, and although I'm waaaay old enough to go straight to a full grown up licence, covid has created such an enormous backlog that booking a test has so far been very nearly impossible. There are an awful lot of spotty youths who want four wheel licences in front of me in the queue. So for now I'm on a squid bike -- a little CBR125R, which will do 80mph in a full tuck and can be a bit frustrating in country road traffic. The CRF's too speed is 82ish on paper, but with roughly twice the power of my CBR, it should be more nimble at overtaking. But how much more? Maybe you can guess at it with 30-50 or 40-60 acceleration data, but such stuff is unobtanium... Again, I'd value your thoughts.

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It just so happens that my very first bike was a CBR125R and I feel your pain on fast roads! Without knowing your intended riding situations the CRF will be far superior in every way except maybe running costs. It will feel much quicker and more enjoyable over the 125. 80mph is not going to be much much better though all small displacement bikes are not great at that speed. It will be much better than the 125 but if that is your priority perhaps a small adventure bike like a CB500X or 390 adventure would be a better option? If you are looking to get off road seriously but still want a decent experience on the road than the 300L/Rally from Honda, WR250R, the KLX300 or DRZ400/DR650 are all great options👍

      @@chroniclesofsolid yeah, if you recall I’m the guy weighing up crf vs svartpilen, so if I decide to take the speedier option, I’ll go for the svart and work out a way to reroute the exhaust for extra ground clearance. The 390adv... looks like a KTM. Some like that, but I happen not to. So if I have to give up ground clearance I’d rather give it up for the svart. As for the other bikes on your list, WRs, KLXs and non-sumo DRZs are as rare as rocking horse shit here in the UK, and if I have to step up to a middleweight adventure bike, it’ll be a Tenere 700 all day long... I’ll probably end up there before long, but I feel like I need a stepping stone to get there.

      I do remember, just wanted to go through them out there incase you had not come across them. Clearly done your research 👍 If you really want to give the dirt a go the CRF makes sense. Svart will be a great commuter and look good at the cafe/pub and an interesting journey to mod. Hard choice. Good luck!

    Hey mate. We love watching your vids. Keep up the great work. I have a 390, absolutely love it. Both on and off road. It is my first adv bike and my intro into offroad riding. It has been a gem. Obviously a few mods needed. We are lucky to live up in high country vic. So some awesome tracks on our doorstep. Its comfy on the highway and is more than capable offroad than I thought. Cheers, Stacey 🤙

To start off I haven't agreed with a lot of your opinions on bikes and you pretty much not agreeing with your own opinion on the drz...wth!?
