  • Ladies and gents hang on to your handlebars! These three riders set out along the Trans America Trial from east coast to west coast covering 5,600 miles in 18 days. Riding to the start of the trail in North Carolina and finishing in Port Orford Oregon, before heading to Portland. Enduring heavy rain on the first night and getting soaked to the bone, water crossings, bears messing with your sleep, Oklahoma mud, freezing temps, scorching heat, couple crashes, and no sale of alcoholic beverages in some dry counties along the way. The weapon of choice was KTM's 390 adventure bikes that have held up flawlessly to the end lacking a bit of power at the high elevations. The lightweight bike makes rough terrain easy to overcome and easy to pick up when you drop it 10 times. Heavy music in this video as most of my footage had no audio due to a technical issue as I was using the Gopro Hero 8 Mic adapter, with an external mic, and trying to charge with an external power bank at the same time. I learned the hard way, test your equipment before you set out. The camera was charging the whole time, but this cut off my external mic.
    The mods on my bike were:
    - TKC80 tires, I would use these again
    - KTM aluminum skid plate, this plate took a beating and held up
    - 14 tooth front sprocket (stock 15), much better low end response and torque
    - KTM enduro seat, a bit more comfortable and easier to adjust your position
    - Barkbuster handguards, great protection for your levers and hands
    - Upgraded foot pegs, larger and flat angle are much more comfortable and provide better stance
    - IXIL slip-on exhaust, I like a good exhaust note
    - Tusk pannier racks and soft bags, these are bulky and big. I would go with a rack less system
    or something smaller in the future
    - Stock suspension was adjusted to max load and was defiantly lacking on the rough bits but works
    - We ate a bunch of pot holes hard and we were sure they would be a huge bend in the wheel, however there was barely anything noticeable
    - Stock windscreen works very well and I'm happy with it, a tall and tinted windscreen will obscure your vision of the potholes and rocky terrain
    - I completed this trip with a stock chain, It stretched almost a foot, Get a better chain
    - No flat tires the entire trip, we had tubes, plugs, and pumps ready
    Filmed in 4k on Gopro Hero 8 and DJI Air 2s
    More videos in the future, Thanks for watching!

    Amazing! And some people say the 390 Adv isn't a true adventure bike.

    Could you let me know what mods you guys did to your KTMs? what you thought worked and didn't work. It looked like an excellent adventure!

    • @IanStokesRees75
      @IanStokesRees75 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ditto. I had heard it was risky to run a 390 on the alloy rims fully loaded off road, but it looks like you three proved that theory wrong. Interested to know about tires, skid plate, any suspension mods, whether the front mud guard got jammed (I’ve considered the after-market raised dirt-bike style mud-guard), windshield mods (looks like one person in the group had a larger one), foot peg mods (heard the stock ones are tipped forward too far for good standing position)

    • @johngreen2457
      @johngreen2457 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rims are no issue unless you air them down too much ( see Brett Tkacs video on TH-cam) or you are going faster than that bike should go.

    No mechanical issues, stalling, average fuel consumption for the trip?

    • @xmotopulse
      @xmotopulse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All our bikes were pretty new, we did not not experience any real issues. No issues with stalling, and the 14 tooth sprocket made the low end more responsive preventing many stalls. Avg fuel varies significantly with the terrain, I never payed attention to it as I had a spare gallon that I never used.

    Awesome ride. I would have liked to hear the bikes singing rather than hear a prerecorded tune. Also, I'm curious: What was your chain cleaning and chain oiling regimen during the ride?

    • @xmotopulse
      @xmotopulse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Just a little chain cleaner spray and wipe, then spray lube. Was not worried about it as I would replace everything at the end of the trip.

    Would the 390 be suitable for a person that is 6’2”. 235 lbs?? Or should I opt for a DR 650 ?? Thanks Tony

    • @xmotopulse
      @xmotopulse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a test ride anyway you can. I've heard tall riders being comfortable. Heres a quote from an article, "The distance from the seat to the footpegs is also comfortable for taller riders like myself at 6 foot 2 inches. Although in the standing position, it is slightly cramped with the bars feeling a bit low and too far back for my size, even with the handlebar supports set in the high/forward position".
