  • The basics for caring for chinchillas! You asked for it, so here it is!
    Julie who is sitting in the dust bath in the video is getting her regular dust bath. She was allowed to sit in the dust during this video, but just so everyone is aware, the dust bath container should not be left in the cage at all times because the chinchillas can develop respiratory problems. Allowing them access to it 10 to 15 min at a time is safe.

    paper bedding isn't a good type of bedding. reason why is paper expands when wet and if they eat the bedding it will possibly expand in there digestive track. the best type of bedding would be non pill fleece.

    • @HappyTailsAnimals
      @HappyTailsAnimals  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If provided with the right environment, they will not eat the bedding.

    Hi, I have a question about chinchillas. Where do they go to the bathroom? Can they be litter trained like rabbits? I've been watching a lot of chinchilla videos lately but none of them talk about their bathroom. Thanks!

    • @HappyTailsAnimals
      @HappyTailsAnimals  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Lauren Kim they go to the bathroom wherever they are sitting.

    • @dly1012
      @dly1012 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they can't control their pooping but some chinchillas will take to urine litter training, not all. so people will put safe bedding, like aspen or kiln dried pine, in something like a glass pyrex dish in the cage where they seem to pee the most. they have like dark yellow orange pee so you will notice if they use it. my one chin used to pee in his dish but he prefers digging in it and getting it all over one corner now, lol. my other one took to a litter tray right away and still uses it. chins do what they want at any given time though!

    So, I want a chinchilla and I'm currently doing my research... I have a couple questions.1. I have a dog who barks very often and it can be heard any where in the house when he does, is that not good for the chinchilla?2. Is it safe to have only one chinchilla? It would have interaction from me regularly.3. My bedroom is usually quite warm, it runs the hottest in the house. The other room I could put my chinchilla in would be either very cold or very warm depending on the weather. Which room should I put it in or are none of them safe?Thank you and please answer my questions if you have the time.

    • @superwomen555
      @superwomen555 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The dog barking may stress the chinchilla out. But closing your bedroom door maybe help. It's save to have one chinchilla if you are going to spend a lot of time with it if not you should get 2 chinchillas because they may get lonely. But also if you do get two chinchillas make sure they have been together most of their lives because some chinchillas don't get along. It's always better to keep the chinchilla in the colder room because they are used to it ( should be used to it) to hot can kill. I hope I helped I many not be an expert but I've had 2 chinchillas of my own. Very lovable pets.

    • @bronaghcobain2816
      @bronaghcobain2816 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it doesn't matter if you are gonna interact with it all the time even if that's 24 hours a day, get two chinchillas. they need a friend that can understand them, they don't like being handled by humans to much.

    My Chinchilla that i just got a few days ago won't eat her food pellets. i got her and her cage and everything for free from someone who didnt have time to give her the attention she needs. it seems as tho she ate the regular food before and i heard that there must be hay in their cage at all times. she only goes for the hay and refuses to eat the pellets but other than that shes fine... does anyone have any tips on what i should do

    • @THEE.apples
      @THEE.apples 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      DakotasBabyGirl Did the chinchilla eat the same pellets you have before? If so, you should get the pellets that your chin eat before and make it is the majority of the pellets in the bowl with a little of the new pellets. Then gradually increase the new pellets until you're only feeding your chin those pellets. Hope this helps, sorry for the late reply.

      You can't potty train their poop, but you can their pee. Just get a flat glass or ceramic dish, fill it with aspen wood bedding, and place a rock (make sure it's been cleaned throughly) in the dish and they will be drawn to pee on it! If you notice one particular place where they pee a lot, it's best to place the dish there

    Getting a second chin is all fine and dandy. But you need to be prepared if your chins suddenly don't get along. I had my two together and they were perfectly fine for months. Till one day my second one just didn't feel like sharing anymore( PS I had a two level ferret nation, there was lots of space) he started chasing my other chin around and eventually took a bite out of this ear. So I had to separate them. They live fine seperatly now. But it does happen.

      I think the initial set up would be a few hundred dollars. Chinchillas usually start at about $150 and the cages state at $150. But you can also look on craigslist of used cages and check shelters and rehoming sites to find a chinchilla for cheaper.

      Nikki B. She said an alfalfa based pellet. If you live in the USA, the best pellets for chinchillas are the Oxbow Essentials Chinchilla Food (NOT Oxbow Garden Select) or Mazuri Chinchilla Diet.

    Question well two our chinchilla wont use a wheel. we have tried the standard shape and the "silent" almost chair like shape. We actually had to take them away because he was chewing on them. Any tips on how to get him to use one? He has plenty of space (4 levels) but i think he would enjoy running. Also we have one and wish to get a second but we're worried about him being aggressive. We'll have the second in a separate enclosure till we can determine if they'll get along but any tips would be helpful.

      From my experience, chinchillas are not good for young kids because they have delicate rib cages and are very antsy.
      More mature kids, like 12-15 are best for these little guys.

    hello!♡ (i hope you will answer this lol, or someone will) I'm 14 and i'm willing to save up money to buy a chinchila/chinchilas, and now i'm trying to look up their diet and how I should raise them. Can you please make a video about their diet and what it should contain? I also go to school every day, and i get back like at 3-4pm. When do they need to eat, and how many times per day? I'm trying to know as much as possible, because maybe i don't have a chance to raise a chinchilla/chinchillas because of school and studies (sometimes i get at home at like 6pm), Can you also make a video about the DO's and DON'Ts when raising a chinchilla?
    (correct me if i' wrong please haha), chinchillas eat hay and that special little things you showed, right? Things like nuts & raisins, berries, should be given twice week at very small doses? They also need dust baths every day, and they need water changing every day, and they need at least 30 minutes of just going around your room (but u can't leave them all night because of dust and that can cause complications?) They need their cage cleaned once a week, and it's recommended to clean EVERYTHING that their cage contain at least once a month.
    Am I missing out something? I want to know everything when it comes to their care. I'm a little worried I won't be able to contain their diet stable, because I don't know anything about their diet >.<
    i'm from europe so sorry for my english haha :)

    Hi!! So I'm seriously considering getting a chinchilla. With that being said , I do own two dogs (a chihuahua and a blue heeler) who bark very often and very loud. Would this freak the chinchilla out? Also I was wondering if you could show some examples of cages that would be good for chinchillas (including how to put the levels in). Also would it be ok if I only got one chinchilla? I could possibly get two, but is it safe to only get one?

      It depends if you have enough time to take care of the chinchilla. If you do have work for more than 4 hours a day then I dont think a chinchilla is the right pet for you. If you socalize with it for more than 30 minutes a day and let it out of it's cage from time to time, then It will become joyful and nothing will happen to it. But if you do indeed only interact with it once a week, then It will go into serious depression and It might even die. Hope this comment helped (:

    I am thinking about getting 2 chinchillas and I was looking for everything they need and I couldn't seem to find the correct pellets for them. Is there a specific type of alfalfa pressed pellets I should get or can they be any kind?

    There was an ad on fb about a chinchilla in a group im in. I am really worried about it because I don't know if young children should be around chinchillas because of how fragile they are. This ad was talking about how it wanted a kid around the age of 9 to play with it. I would want to get the chinchilla so I would know it would be in a good home but my parents don't want me to get more animals. I'm just hoping it gets into a home that knows about chinchillas.

    I have one chinchilla, a boy. I play with him and let him run around an hour+ every day, and check in to say hi multiple times a day. Will he be okay alone, or should I look into getting another one?

    Hi there, I am about to get a chinchilla and I have ordered a cage that has a plastic base and I am worried it might chew on it. Do you think it would be okay if I place many toys inside ?

    I have a question, the cage I have has a wired bottom. the wires are not far apart and my chinchilla has a solid place to rest when he needs it, but my question is, what can I use to make the bottom in the cage solid? I don't have much access to cardboard and a fleece or towel I simply can not wash all the time as I have to pay to wash clothes. of I can have any suggestions that would be fantastic.

    My cage is homemade, it is a tank at the bottom and a wire cage at the top. There is a wooden ladder leading to the wire cage at the top. The tank is empty, but the wire cage has their food, water, hammocks, etc. Is it ok to have my cage like that?
