  • ASL Receptive Fingerspelling Practice.
Intended Audience: Mid-semester, Level 1 (Beginner)
Dr. Bill of ASL University (Lifeprint.com) drills a volunteer student (CJ) on fingerspelling. Note: Yes, I know that at times I spell "very fast" to beginner level students. I do that on purpose to help them get past always trying to read "letter by letter." The goal is to learn to recognize the shape and flow of fingerspelled words. I intentionally challenge the students to see how much they are capable of accomplishing.

    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
Hey, I could really use your help.
If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
A donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    Thanks!

p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at:

Take care and love to you all.

I always watch your videos for practicing my receptive skills. I don't have deaf friends, so your videos help me a lot. Please do more receptive skills practice videos. Thank you :)

      J.L.
I do enjoy working one-on-one with students (as you can see from my playlist) -- but only as long as the student gives me permission to record it and post it for others to enjoy and benefit from. Once in a while my schedule frees up to do one-on-one or online tutoring but my current projects are keeping me busy for now.
      Good luck on your EIPA!

some times when I see the same word repeated I think Bill is trying to tell a story. the story I got here is at a pool park someone (might have been bill) poached something plastic (probably a chair) during prom and got a rash well eating rice. (hope you enjoy this bill!)

Yah, Netflix and Disney have both contacted me seeking rights to turn that story into a movie. I was holding out for Bruce Willis to play "me" in it but since he retired I'm requesting Vin Diesel.

The modified letters get me (like “e” and “o”). When do you use them vs. a normal letter? Like “Ok” and “joke”. 🤔

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

There are so many more versions and variations of the fingerspelled letters than appear on a standard fingerspelling "ABC chart." You do the modified versions when the preceding or following letters make it convenient. For example, since the "K" in OK only uses the thumb, index, and middle finger -- the preceding "O" tends to be modified into a three digit version of "O." That's one of the reasons (but not the only reason) I'm doing these new videos is to show some of the ways fingerspelling morphs when you do it at higher speeds.

This is great practice. I was signing with a Deaf gentleman when my grandma came in. She took the sign "when" and made it into a "tornado". Now he thinks there was a tornado while he was sleeping! I have no clue how to fix this.

Jana, Google: ASL meetup near me. Or google: "Deaf Socials near me." Or: "Deaf Events near me." Then start going to events, socials, and/or meetups where you can interact with Deaf people.
