- Haircuts can be a huge nightmare. I never thought Gabe would be able to get past his fear and anxiety. After years of practice Gabe has now been able to sit through an entire haircut and seem happy. He sat for the whole time he was having his hair cut by Lilly! This was Gabe's third haircut by Lilly!

This young man has a gravity to him that is inexplicable. I don’t see him in my timeline often, but when I do, it takes my breath away.
I like how the hairdresser talked to Gabe.. she took time to make sure Gabe felt comfortable. His hair grows fast. My grandsons hair grows quickly too. He has to have it cut monthly. Gabe you look great. Long island Kathy

I dunno, but she seems to be cutting like 1/8" - 1/2" off the ends, which makes me wonder why you would bother to come in and fool with that?

It’s amazing how creating a calm environment and giving reassuring encouragement can make such a huge difference in how someone with autism experiences an event. For someone on the spectrum, getting a haircut can be very frightening and confusing. Instead of the scary event it could have been for him, Gabe will likely remember this as a positive experience because they took the time to understand his needs. I so admire Gabe’s amazing mothers and their dedication to their son. I’m glad he has people in his life who love him for exactly who he is.

I also love his longer hair, which has more curl/wave to it. This cut was not 'right'- how it was thicker/rounded all around by the ears. (I am not wanting to say the terminology that one would call such a style.)

My autistic son is not a fan of haircuts. So we are on a “long” hair journey lol. Gabe you look fantastic!!!

Gabe is so handsome. Does he look at himself in the mirror? I feel he understands language from other people even when people aren't talking directly to him, but maybe they are talking to you or something. Anyway, Gabe is a hero to many if he doesn't mind chronicling his journey. He is enlightening the world by letting us learn more about autism instead of just reading about it. Also, I guess we need to give these awesome moms some credit too!!😊 I admire y'alls desire to help Gabe live his awesome life. I wish it could be the same for all autistic persons. Gabe is such a sweet young man. I had a family of autistic kids who were my hair clients before I retired from doing hair. They were some of the most amazing kids. I truly miss them.
Has he always been so tolerant of haircuts? Our grandson is 3 and is nonverbal with autism. Haircuts are a dreaded event here….. forget bringing clippers out!! He basically gives the hairdresser a workout because he will not sit and she has to follow him around and trim his hair. I love your videos and love Gabes progress. You are wonderful mothers and are blessed with such a beautiful son❤
@@Lynne-703 she let him fèel the clippers first. 3 would be too young for that much stimulation. But it helped Gabe feel safe by knowing what was coming.

Great music to get your haircut to! My brother has autism. His is worse king, but he loved going to the barbershop. He loves getting his haircut and getting a Coca-Cola. I have been following Gabe's story for a while. He has the best parents to take care of him.

He definitely needs a new hairdresser. This one has frantic energy and there is no rhyme nor reason to her cutting technique. I was an artist director in many salons during my career. He needs someone calm and methodical to work with him. All the rough combing doesn’t help. Also no cape?

He seems absolutely fine to me. He is completely capable of making his desires known even though he doesnt speak verbally through actions, verbalizing sounds, and his AAC board. Also he may not like the feel of the cape on his neck or body. A lot of autistic people are hyper sensitive to certain kinds of touch. He may have expressed a desire to not wear the cape when getting his hair cut in the past and that should be respected even if its not "normally whats done"

I was blessed with helping a boy with autism, deaf, with hyperactive behavior. Diagnosed as only 3 children in North America with this extreme condition in the early 80's Within a year by taking the child out of the clinical settings supposedly to help him did we see positive engagement with the child. I have to attribute the dedicated staff we were able to gather to live with him n assist him in his journey. Aho! Through the time we were given to help we Took him off ritalan and other drugs which were given to him 4X daily!! Arranged family visits, Then we were able to get him accepted into a specialized treatment facility after seeing the progress made by his Nation to help him. Heartbreaking to surrender him to the Organization but back then ? NO choices ! Still hurts!
His haircut sorta reminds me of the Beatles, a little. It's very British. Also, I noticed that he's pretty much lost all of his baby hair, and so he's showing a lot of signs of maturity. It's very encouraging to see how much progress he's making. He didn't seem to get upset very much, at all. If anything, I thought he seemed to just be totally bored.
Congrats on graduating 8th grade! That was a really tough year, for me. It seems like Gabe had a pretty good year, though.

Very nice Gabe!! . Excellent behaviour (as always). Next time put a cloth arround his chest to prevent hair falling over his neck, so he wont feel the itching from the hair that was covering him.😊 ❤
It’s unlikely they’ve forgotten to put it on him, most likely there’s a reason for it not being worn. I can’t say what the case is for Gabe, but I have a son with autism who’s also non speaking & is very similar in personality and responses to Gabe. And he will not wear the hairdressing cape. So we simply accept the hair that gets cut off will end up on his clothing and we prepare by bringing spare clothes to change him right afterwards.

She was great with him. I'm so happy you found such a great stylist. She's patient and aware. I do my son's hair myself because the lady who cut my autistic 4 year old's hair cut his ear with the clippers and didn't even tell us. After that he was afraid of them. I use scissors only. Finding someone who cares and pays attention is so important.
