    Catholic priests who have been accused of sexual abuse number between 5,700 and 10,000, but because of restrictive statutes of limitations, only a few hundred have been tried, convicted, and sentenced for their crimes. The rest are never listed on a Meghan's Law list, and society bears the terrible cost of their continued access to children.

      @PatrickMcAsey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      AnthonyTBlack Good posting, but I think your estimate of up to 10,000 paedophile priests is on the low side. I understand that there are about 415,000 Catholic priests worldwide. Your estimate of up to 10,000 is based on the assumption that about 2% of them are paedophiles. It is almost certainly higher than this; at least 5%, and even up to 10%. Pope Francis called the problem 'a leprosy'.

    As a survivor of the abuse of Roman Catholic priests, my advice is to leave that church. I was brainwashed for years beliving that it would all stop. I loved being an altar boy and was always the first at the church. I put on my cassock and surplice and then went to pray before anyone else got there. I served every Sunday. That was what turned on my abusers and I started to think that I was serving God by what was done to me. 20 years later, I still suffer and can't go past a catholic church without remembering the abuse.

Power seeking men became priests for the wrong reasons. Of course I did know kind priests who were spiritual men who wanted to help and counsel people. But it also attracts a shady crowd. Same with the humanitarian nuns out there vs the ones who want to feel important and are cruel and abusive to kids.

    • @PatrickMcAsey
      @PatrickMcAsey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@darsom2717 During the whole of my school education I was taught continually and seemingly, perpetually, about the 'One True, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church'. Since it stands up by this claim, it must now fall by it. Sexual abuse started becoming apparent about 30 years ago, if I remember correctly. We would have been prepared to forgive the Catholic Church if this evil had been confined to a few errant priests, and if the Catholic Church had taken immediate action then we would have admired it. We're not talking about a few 'bad eggs' here. This evil has been so vast, and more seriously, the cover up has been such an equally vast scale that we can only say that the Catholic Church at every level has been complicit in it. So this means that the abuse has continued _solely because of_ the Catholic Church itself. I would not want to be any part of such an organisation if I had not turned away from it long ago.

    Great video! Gregory is our Archbishop here in Atlanta. I have to go through all the background checks, take tests and watch videos to get my certification every time I want to volunteer with teens- even though the Catholic Church has never had a sex scandal with soccer moms! I don't get the feeling that the Church truly realizes that the cover up is just as much of a crime as the original sex abuse. I also get the feeling sometimes that clergy feel like they have been "too painted with the same brush" as the molesters and feel like they are the victims. They need to realize that until the hierarchy is called out- by name- and punished for their collaboration with the molester then the issue will never go away and they will all be viewed as suspect.

When I went to the office (in the daytime after Mass) to meet with said Priest, he locked the office door and drew the shades. Meetings with other Priests always involved a secretary present and an open door policy. My concerns were not taken seriously (big shock) and I was asked “who all knows about this,” when I said I had consulted a member of law enforcement, I was dismissed. Never went back to that church and shortly afterwards said Priest was moved to teach at a seminary.

    People ask how it's possible this could happen for so long, but it's quite straightforward: the imposition of a strict code of celibacy and heterosexuality combined with easy access to vulnerable minors and the position of authority in a community all combines to create an atmosphere of power and evil. And given how relatively recent the scandal around the Church is, one cannot fathom just how far back in history these monstrous crimes must have occurred...

      and of course here we go AGAIN with the whole "celibacy is what causes this to happen" argument 🙄
      I'm not here to deny that abuse is evil no matter what. But I would advise you to look up Jerry Sandusky. He also has a thing for young boys and well....he was MARRIED! Now I could give a few more examples but all it should take is one example to the contrary to dispel a myth

    This scandal proves that it just takes 1 child, 1 victim. And the flood gates explode and thousands of victims will feel safe to come forward.

    All of them should be put in jail. The number of people accused of child and teen abuse is astounding. The Roman Catholic church has lost its credibility. They should be disbanded. Even Jesus would have wanted it. Shame on these people for abusing children in his name and his house.
