- We Rebuild the 912 Engine that came in my 356. There are a few slight differences between the 912 and 356 engines but not many. They are very similar.

A pair of Webers from a Carrera would be nice ! Excellent work :-)
Great job Jared
I know it's not my call, but flip flops in the garage... it's a broken foot waiting to.... happen... I won't ever bring it up again. Love what you do!
wish my mechanic would build engines this fast :-)
Some of the old Buicks and big block Mopar motors with the oil pumps not in the oil pan called for some Vaseline to be packed in the oil pump gears. This would help the pump draw oil on a new pump. The vaseline has a low melting point and doesn't cause any problem. I never new that each cylinder had an exhaust pipe and an air inlet on those motors. Makes for better air flow. Nice job, thank for posting the build. One engine I have never messed with.
so satisfying to have all the clean parts bolted back together...looking good. I wish I could heave the Pontiac 400 I'm building as easily as this porsche...lol
Nicely done. Fun to watch.
I was mesmerized! Definitely one of my favourites so far.
Those little blue rubber o-rings are a pain and tear or mash all too easily if not lubricated before installing. I saw an o-ring where some turkey had turned the recess on the metal washer away from the o-ring. That engine did not last 30.000 miles! Great job! Say hello to Walter, Jared!
Excellent video. Looking forward to Sunday’s install.
Nice job, clean... you are living the dream of many. Thanx for sharing this!
I'd love to have that engine in my 64Bus
That looks absolutely amazing. I wish my own '62 S90 looked that good!
Nice job. The engine came out beautiful. Can't wait to see it running.
That was a interesting one.
Can't wait for the next episode!
Looking good! Thanks for sharing! 👍
Great job Jared 😃👍🏻
I like ur style dude. Always great to watch.
Excellent work. Love watching your videos. Thanks RT
WOW! Well done, such a beautiful machine!
You made it look easy. Good vidio
Nicely done as usual.
Thanks, and Woof to Walter
Jerod. I was hoping to see the ending and a start on the jack. Well there’s next week
👍🏼💯👍🏼
Great job
👍🏼💯👍🏼
Missing is a thick fiber washer between the fan shroud and the generator cover plate. Usually the rear sheet metal piece is installed after the engine is in the car. Hopefully your sump bolts don't leak. I usually have to locktite them into the case, just to prevent oil seepage. Also the acorn nuts typical to VW help too. Looking good otherwise.
Jerod, Schnell is right about the missing fiber washer between the fan shroud and cover plate. It helps center the fan within the fan shroud. You will have to remove the rear sheet metal to install the engine. There is also a small bracket in the front of the fan shroud that holds the metal fuel line that runs between the two carbs. Good work on the spacers under the rocker arm stands!
Awesome!
Beau casse-tête, j’avais hâte de te voir monter ce moteur, une différence avec le moteur du modèle T 1923.
Bravo, j’ai hâte d’entente le son de ce moteur.
Nice!
Awesome
Great job. I think you must fix the left front fender, it's to much damage. After this hard job with the motor the car deserve to fix that. But...if you love it, that's ok!
So bright and clean! What was the actual time of assembly? Your videos are making me cocky. Its like when I used to watch New Yankee Workshop. Norm made everything look so easy and effortless...and then I tried woodworking. LOL
Het ziet er geweldig uit top job 🤩👍👌✊ Groetjes uit Holland 🥰👋🏼👋🏼🌹🌹🌹🌹
beau travail
Una maravilla😍😍👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow
👍 👍 👍!!!
Absolutely beautiful, Jared. That paint color you used on the muffler I used many years ago on the heater boxes of my car. I remember it was heat resistant but don’t remember the brand and color. Which one is it?
That’s the way the new muffler came, I didn’t paint it.
Did you powder coat or paint the fan shroud? what is the color code you used? Amazing video!
I painted it, I don’t have the paint code sorry
I’m sure your tired of people asking when your going to restore it. I’d drive it just the way it is for a while too. Have you looked into one of those hand held planishing hammers? I’m by no means a body guy, but it seems a lot of that can be smoothed out with a hammer/dolly and then planishing to finish.
I don’t want to lose any more of the original paint, so I stopped beating on it👍
Now do the body work...paint and put a double stripe up the middle lol
Another amazing and fun build video; GREAT JOB! I was wondering why you did not use the gasket sealant on all gaskets; is it because you don't need it on gaskets that have low pressure on them? Just curious. Can't wait for the re-start!!
If I think I might need to take something back off, I don’t use sealer on the gasket👍
@@Jerod_Helt NOT SO FAST!! You used sealant on the case, and I thought you used sealant or something else on some gaskets but not others, but I could be mistaken on that. Obviously, it's on the video. I hope I don't send you on a wild goose chase!!
@@superbear617 things like the oil pump and oil screen need to be accessed for maintenance, so no gasket sealer on them. And no sealer near fuel, like on the intake manifolds👍
@@Jerod_Helt That makes sense, thanks for the explanation.
👍👍✌️
Great video. What is the linkage on the fan shroud?
Throttle linkage 👍
@@Jerod_Helt thanks. I’m not a Porsche v dub guy. Appreciate your response.
Good job! So what is the difference between the 912 and 356 engines?
Pretty much the same thing except the 912s are the last evolution of that type of motor.
The “3rd piece” is slightly different, and the crank and bearings are slightly different👍
I would have liked to see the carbs on it.
Jerod, I noticed the 12v coil. Did the car come to you as a 12v?
No, but I’ve converted it to 12v
What size shim did you start with on the flywheel ?
I don’t remember, sorry it was a while ago
You should had put white grease on the oil pump gasket.
@JHNClassics What does the open space at 18:42 do?
Never mind, it's the oil fill isn't it.
Yep, it’s part of the oil filler neck
@@Jerod_Helt I saw it when you were disassembling the Unloved Beetle.
Did the Porsche have shutters and thermostat?
Yes, but I’m not installing them. The temperature is very mild and consistent here👍
without burr.
So how could you upload this video without a showing of Walter. :(
no Walter?
I don’t know what his problem is lately… maybe it’s too hot for him🙂
Do you do this as a hobby or buisiness? I have a C that's been idle for more since 2000. Same color as yours. Would you be interested in doing another rebuild?
It’s a hobby for me. Unfortunately, I barely have time to work on my own cars so I don’t work an other peoples cars.
Hey man, I'm going through the same process right now and have that exact same cylinder/piston 'big bore' set. I've watched your final videos regarding the price and running of the vehicle and it sounds like the pistons you've shown in the assembly video here were giving you issues. I'm going in to get my engine machined and I was planning on send this 86mm set in with the heads to make sure they don't have this same issue.. Is there anything that you think you could've asked or said to the machine shop to help make this set work for the heads? For context, I have a 1960 Super 90 engine that's almost entirely original.. Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much for this video series.
I should have installed spacers below the cylinder to provide the proper gap between the piston and the head. But I’m glad I decided not to use those pistons, now I don’t have to worry about the piston hitting the spark plug if the wrong spark plug ever gets installed.
