Hi CJ!!! Thank you for the post! I was lucky enough to find a pair of the 4522’s online recently. They are my favorite Red Wings! The nitrile sole, strait up eyelets and that beautiful briar oilslick leather. The perfect boot!!!!!
I have the newer blacksmith in briar oil slick, and I have found that the mink oil in the tin is actually really nice on these. You can actually give it a shine with a brush.
I have the 3141 work chukka in briar and I just had the sole swapped to the chemigum from the merchant. Polished up with the leather conditioner and they are some damned good lookin boots now.
They do like you said, look a little like dark cherry after conditioning but they look sumptuous, deep and rich. Fabulous! I’m looking on getting a pair of Mocs in the Briar, I’m loving the look of that leather. My Rangers fit excellent, and that being the case, could you tell me, should I get the Moc in the same size? No store near me. Love your videos 😉
CJ Cook ... ok, the white sole will contrast the navy maybe better than the black cork... it would be interesting how good the navy color works with the round toes... the mocs are just fabulous...
Could you use the Red Wing leather cream on these booths rather than the leather conditioner that you used? Differences between the two? Great videos and love your collection. Keep it up !
I love my blacksmiths awsome work boot just broke mine in and think there more comfortable to were for 10 hours a day than my iron rangers and I thought they were a great day to day all day work boot
Two questions Mr. Cook. 1. When you get Red Wings, do you get 1/2 size smaller than your regular shoe size? 2. Do you know if the Engineer boots are discontinued? I been wanting to get a pair but they don’t have them in the website or store. Thanx.
Yes, I go a have size down. The engineers are only available in Asia. You can find them on eBay if you get lucky. If I were you I would buy Wesco Engineers. They are WAAAY better looking and easier to acquire.
Hi I hope you will answer a question...I am going to acquire my first pair of Red Wings. I am going down the Blacksmith trail but I have also found Beckmans that I could possibly get as well. Which would you recommend from a leather, comfort and build quality? Thanks very much for all your videos.
@@CJCook Thank you very much for the opinion but I just received the Blacksmith Briar yesterday. I was fitted at the store - 1/2 size down from my norm. I can feel there will be a bit of a break-in. My only critique is that the new laces are pain to pull tight(also could be a bit longer. I notice you lace two different ways - more of an over lacing (on this vid.) and a more traditional (on your earlier vid.) . Can you say how you find the differences? Also, now that's it's been a little while, what's your after opinion on the color change that you did? How has the leather reacted? Thanks again for your videos.
@@hikingpipes6911 The laces will lose some to the wax over wear and time. I laced using the over method because that is the way the guys at the Red Wing lace the boots. It takes some getting used to but I now prefer it. It does help with the length...somehow. I don't know how but it does...hahaha!
Just curious..., why do you find the nitrile cork great...? Seems to me they are to slippery for day to day use in wet conditions(I live in Amsterdam..., you know how the weather is over there in fall/winter)
another thing to consider is the mini lug soles are pretty uncomfortable at first. I can really feel the lugs even through gel inserts. wow. unbelievable. i'm sure i'll get used to them and i'll change the insoles but it did surprise me!
For my copper & rough I like how the leather cream keeps the original color but I want more water resistance. Would it be ok to do a coat of leather cream first and then the conditioner. My thinking is the leather won't soak as much of the conditioner to darken it.
Hey CJ. Just wanted to know when you would personally use the All natural leather conditioner and when you would use the boot oil. What situation calls for what? Thank you
I use the natural leather conditioner as I would mink oil. When I want a heavy coat for the elements. The boot oil I use on Amber Harness, Brown Boomer and Ebony Harness
@@CJCook awesome. I just got into the game with a pair of 8111s. I have boot oil, leather cream (which is what I've been using on them up to this point...great stuff), and saphir's 100% mink oil (which is like all natural leather conditioner). I got the saphir's for my 875s which are in the mail, but was thinking about putting them on my 8111s. I just don't want them too dark. With this being said tho, I'm having a hard time finding a situation where I'd want to use the boot oil.
Nice. Pro-tip : you should not condition the leather where the eyelids are located. You soften the leather up with the conditioner and the eyelids may loosen up because of that. The damage might be irreversable.
Holy crap cj. A little goes a long way. This is way too much pecards. Also not good for letting leather breathe. I don't like how redwing will take a product and rename it because it makes looking it up hard. But this is pecards.
How did you discover this is Pecards? Are all the Redwing branded products Pecards? I would love to know because I would rather pick up the company made stuff without having to pay for the Redwing logo.
Don't you wear insoles in your boots? Try the engineers without the insoles or take them to a cobbler and get the instep stretched since it hurts your feet. RW makes the nicest looking engineer outside of the bespoke makers.

Briar is a very beautiful colour. It is very attractive ❤
It really is!!
I like to use the Red Wing Leather Cream. It doesn't darken the leather much at all.
I like the darker result. Lovely chestnut brown.
You really need to start doing a wrist watch check you have a nice collection GShocking today!

You should use your welt brush to get in all the seams. Then use your brush to really spread the conditioner around. That's what I do for mine 8146's.
Red Wing Best Boot 4597, Hands Down...

On the way!
Would love to see a photo of this. Maybe post a link?

Now this is a brilliant idea idea! They look great!
I think those were a brooks brothers explosive at one point. Someone on reddit posted similarly described boots recently.
Beautiful boots! Have you ever used mink oil on the briar? If so did it darken more than what you used in this video?
Awesome color,
thank you
Got any pictures on how the 4585 looks now?

I size up a half size with moc toes cause they are slightly narrow vs. the Iron Rangers
@@CJCook cheers CJ👍🏻
I used Neatsfoot oil and they went the deepest rich brown! All my briar oil get that.
@@johnmutton799 love it!
absolutely beautiful, hey CJ , what size are those, 8.5?
portage navy ;) should be the next color for the blacksmith...
I asked Red Wing to make the Rover in Navy Portage but I think they will make a Rover in Briar first.

looking forward when u do a conditioning vid for ur 4585 haha
Ah yes, I need to. I thrashed those bad boys.
Hello, how can I order?
Ive watch a number of boot cleaning video's and Ive not seen anyone clean the boot sole's
Only in Japan. They completely soak the boot in a tub of water - - Red Wing does not recommend that.
Hey nice video😊. May i know which horse hair brush do you use. And which is the best one to go with for buffing n all.
Thanks.
Save some money with the welt brush and use a baby toothbrush it will work fine, and cost about $3.
Could you use the Red Wing leather cream on these booths rather than the leather conditioner that you used? Differences between the two? Great videos and love your collection. Keep it up !
Yeah, leather cream is better I think.
Getting desperate - any place other than eBay I should look to get a pair? Size 9D here…
do they still make this boot? I only see the ones with speed hooks which I hate
I love my blacksmiths awsome work boot just broke mine in and think there more comfortable to were for 10 hours a day than my iron rangers and I thought they were a great day to day all day work boot
Yeah, I agree 💯
Great info.
Mink oil vs all natural leather conditioner?
Thanks
Thank you
Why Red Wing never made an iron Ranger in briar oil slick leather ?
good question!
Hi CJ, from Bangkok.
Have you ever used Saddle Soap at first step on your boots?
Does it good?
Hey! What's up Bangkok?!
I have never used saddle soap. But, I have known it to do wonders.
Can you tell me how long they have been making this particular boot?
Red Wing no longer makes this version.
Good video CJ ! Do you recommend the all natural leather conditioner for the iron ranger in Amber Harness or leather cream ?
Amber Harness I use mink oil or boot oil. Leather Cream is fine.
@@CJCook thanks CJ I’ll try the leather cream

I subbed your Chanel a couple of weeks ago and now I have had to re subscribe strange!!

The Beckman has a higher quality leather. Also, I think the Beckman comes with a better outsole.

Hmmm, interesting thought. It may work
Is this conditioner the same as a sno-seal?
I think SnoSeal has a higher percentage of bees wax.
What's the difference between the 4522 and the 3340? thanks
Cork sole
Leather-lined
Enamel hardware all on the 4522
3340: brass hardware, canvas lined, Vibram mini lug sole
@@CJCook got it, thanks
Those look much better. Plus they will eventually fade and keep aging.

I kind of prefer the Original colour, to each there own I guess.
Parifin wax and left over bacon fat with a heat gun is the conditioner add some Vaseline
really?
I feel like if they're tacky it means they didn't need much conditioner, like it couldn't be absorbed. Eh?
The all natural leather conditioner has pine pitch in it and I think that is what makes it “tacky”.
