I love the look of the leather cream on my 8085s. So much so that it will be hard to get another type of leather when I ready to get a pair of moc toes
I try to use mink oil on everything, regardless of color changing. I just like the oily/waxy feel it gives and how long lasting it is. My 8111’s eat up mink oil without darkening contrary to why people suggest.
It does not darken leather in most cases, but it does eventually cause damage to the leather (as it oxidizes) eventually destroying it, and it rots the laces (it is acidic).
@@adkmtns5726 as with any leather care products, you have to apply them when needed. A lot of things react to O2 and cause oxidation. We oxidize as well. Use neatstoot appropriately!
@@AgonxOC Agreed yes. I guess I was just looking at the long term. Many would see this video and use this cream every time they condition their boots. That would lessen the life of the boot.
@CJ Cook I keep it in my man-cave AKA the basement faaar away from my Husky. But yes, it sure is awesome. The smell alone gets me every time. You definitely need to get one, but if you’re like me, you’ll be conditioning and babying it constantly 😅
Can i apply a leather balm to my boots right after using a leather cream?, And can you tell me if doing that will make my boots patina become more beautifull in the long run?.
I would have liked it if you'd cut to them fully dry and compared the shots so we could see that it didn't darken as it looks a lot darker straight after application. Does this conditioner contain waxes and make water bead up on them to protect the leather?
A safety note about throwing your boot rag in the washer...I've heard that it's dangerous to put heavily oily rags in the wash because they can catch fire due to static sparks in the dryer. An oily, waxy cotton rag is pretty darn flammable. Might be better to just get a new rag when the old one is spent! P.S. Awesome video! Red Wing Leather Cream is the product I chose to give my new (gently used) 8111s some love. Happy to report that it did not darken the leather more than a fraction of a shade.
You could also try a toothbrush or a welt brush for the corrosion. Lineman are really a pain :) I think it's the cut and the extra material. I had the same happen to me, thinking they were broken in, went for a longer walk into the city and died there :)
Hey CJ! Love the video! Quick question, I just bought my 5th pair of RW moc toes and it is the 8857. I saw in an earlier video that you have the Hawthorne Abilene Leather Moc Toe and was wondering how do you go about protecting it since the 8857 and Hawtorne Abilene are pretty much similar in leather types. Thanks!
Hey CJ, I Have a pair of 875 ORO Mock's toes and a brown pair of Thursday Captains, I want to get another pair of Red Wings. I have the choice of the 8084 Iron Ranger Black, 8086 Iron Ranger Charcoal or the 3345 Blacksmith Black Prairies which in your opinion should I get. Thanks in advance
Cobbler could stretch the instep easily. No more than $40. For the free 99 method, use gallon freeze bags and feel them up with water, line the boots and leave them in the freeze over night. Wear them as much as you can the following days.
i've got the 8085 and 8084. i have not conditioned the rough and tough yet. are there any other oils that you would use or recommend to protect the copper rough and tough more than just the cream - that will not darken it too much? i used the cream on the 8084s, but didn't like how they looked. it left kind of a haze on the black leather that wouldn't buff out, especially around the stitching and cap toe, no matter how much i tried to buff it out with a brush. i ended up just taking a wet t-shirt to it to remove that haze. obviously the cream is not good for the black iron rangers. what do you suggest for them? different conditioning should be used for the two boots. no?
@@CJCook thanks! you would use the all natural leather conditioner on just the 8084s, or you'd also use them on the 8085s. does the conditioner protect any more than the leather cream? have you ever actually used the conditioner on the rough and tough? curious to know how much it would actually darken the leather. sorry for all the questions. appreciate your content, man!
Michael, I too have the 8084 as well as the 8085 ordered and on their way. I used the leather cleaner first on my 8084’s and then the leather cream, mind you my 8084 are only 3 weeks old so I probably should’ve just left them alone, but I know what you mean about the leather cream on the 8084’s, it sort of left a haze to them, I also ended up using way too much I turned out as I got caught in a rain storm and my boots started to literally leak the white leather cream, hence I used too much. Also, I noticed my rags I used, which were both brand new micro fibers from Costco, sort of turned black from the cleaner as well as the leather cream, called Redwings and they said it was normal with the first conditioning and it was dye bleed off? My 8084’s look fine now though 🤷♂️
I can't believe I watched you clean the gunk from around the eyelets. Then you didn't clean the leather cream from inside the eyelets. I am so confused right now.

CJ, any thoughts on what type of soap to try and get denim dye out of 875’s? I have the foam cleaner from RW?
Where can I find this boot, is it discontinued?
eBay
Hi CJ, I’m Rashid from Singapore. Just wondering wether u have Moc Toe Canoe, 9850/9851..? Love if u could do a review on it.

Look at how high the tongue is gusseted. Helps keep water and dirt away. More boots should be like that.
I agree
New to the boot game, what are these call? I’ve looked in the website and I can’t find them! Thank you
Ooooh! These are very difficult to find. They were a Red Wing x J.Crew collab. Try eBay.
HELLO, I AM WAITING FOR A PAIR OF IRON RANGER 8119, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO USE BEFORE USING THEM?
You don't have to condition them. But...If you want to use Mink Oil.

What is the difference between boot cream and leather cream ???
Boot cream is usually used as a base before applying a colored cream. Leather Cream is Neatsfoot Oil and is used by itself.
