You are very much a natural at this review and react type of thing. I appreciate when I see someone passionate and knowledgeable in whatever they may be doing. You also display a deep love of music. Another trait that I take personally. In short I own over 2700 albums and compact discs ranging in genres from Opera and Classical to the Extreme Metal of such stalwarts as Brutal Truth and Strapping Young Lad. I like to open up a band's family tree to see where the musicians come from then follow those lines to more music. Anyway, I just wanted to congratulate you on your must excellent channel. Mr. Albrighton's guitar work is masterful. I had the privilege of seeing the band in Cleveland a few years back (10?) and spoke with a very grateful Roye Albrighton and his wife after the show. I've been a fan of this band since about 1975 when I discovered this album. I'm thrilled that you have chosen to give them a listen.
JP, another great reaction to a classic prog recording. Just as you, I wonder why they weren't as well known as other prog bands from their era. The big names in prog from that era either had great stage presence which would generate a boat load of press. or a member that caught the presses attention. The big 5 prog bands Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP & King Crimson, beside the great music they created all had ways of generating press. All of those top 5 prog bands garnered a lot of press from either their stage shows, or had members that could get the attention of the press. Nektar, Camel, Gentle Giant etc. just couldn't get a great deal of press coverage and the result was they became semi cult bands to various degrees. That's my take for what it's worth. PS: you know there is also an album that didn't generate a lot of press called "White City" by Pete Townsend, you should listen to a song called "Give Blood" you'd love it as you would the rest of the album... 🙂
Don't be a Prog snob. There are too many of us out there. It is possible that some else really enjoys a song or album, group that you don't. I can't remember how much great music I dismissed when I was younger because it didn't live up to my high "prog" standards. While Nektar isn't as complex, technical or diverse as many of the greats. I do find the overall sound to be very pleasing. There is nothing that stands out but overall I enjoy this band as much as any other. In fact I am driving 4 hours to Indianapolis to see them, "Mo" Moore and Ron Howden are the remaining original members, perform Remember to the Future in its entirety for the 50th anniversary.
It got little to no radio play back in the day and was grouped with the avant-garde and obscure, and unlike many concept LP's there wasn't a "cut" that made radio.....put this on the turntable and it played for the duration. I had it recorded on an 8 track and it aced for traveling music. Honorable mention to Long John Boldry's "Flying" and Brian Eno's "Here Come the Warm Jets" LP which shared that 8 track player at the time. Thanks for the memories.
In "Days of Future Passed", they told the nay-Sayers to kiss their ass. Creation is free, and opinions just gas. Moody and Blue, everyone's a critic too, please not you? Forget the mistakes of life past. If you can tear off this suture, You can also "Remember the Future". And drink the Nektar of Nirvana at last. (pretty feeble, blame it on morning meds!). Peace & Love. And Stimpy wants some 'Ren'!
For those interested, there is a dvd release, Nektar Pure live in germany 2005, with a reformed Nektar performing the full Remember the Future, a Tab in the Ocean, a Fay in the Life of a Preacher & other Nektar faces. Well worth searching out.
This is on a par with "Close To The Edge" as one of the top progressive compositions of all time. I bought it on vinyl the week it was first released, and went through multiple copies on CD as well. I am so glad to be a Patron after seeing you react to this! FYI, Nektar is currently on tour in the U.S. for the 50th anniversary of "Remember the Future". They are playing the entire album in one set!

For an album released in 1973, RTF holds up well against other albums of that year, especially Dark Side Of The Moon and Selling England By The Pound. Some of the guitar work is very similar to Gilmour's, and all of those great refrains, one after the other, have a similar structure as Selling England By The Pound (Hackett said he and Banks collected all their great riffs and used them to make the album). Nektar didn't copy those albums either, because they were released within months of each other. And just hearing it now, RFT sounds still as fresh and spontaneous as when I first heard it.

Had never heard of Nektar till the late 70's when I came across Remember The Future in a "used" record bin; and bought it based on the album cover alone. Being thrilled to come across Nektar by chance, I then purchased 4 more "used" Nektar albums (still have them), and became a huge fan!! Unlike the fame of Yes, Genesis, ELP, no one I know had ever heard of Nektar. Great stuff!! THANK YOU JP for bringing them to light! Please do more Nektar!! Peace and Love to all!
Other then Yes, I always wondered what other band The Flower Kings sounded like and listening to this answered my questions. And to answer your question about why this isn’t heralded I figure they groove more then your normal prog band and the lyrics are very hippy metaphysical. I tend to believe it’s all about Roy’s playing that gets all the spotlights. I saw them in the early 2000’s and they were remarkable. RIP Roy, such a voice, such guitar playing, a legend!
I never saw them live (I've heard they play REALLY loud), but I know the light show was an integral component of their concerts, which I suspect may play a role in the parts of RTF where a segment repeats many times: perhaps those are moments when the attendees are supposed to "lose themselves" in the visuals.
Fantastic wasn't it Justin ☺ The first two Albums "Journey to the Center of the Eye" and Tab in the Ocean" are much more complexed Classic Spacey Prog and RTF is an easier listen for the Newbie but just as Amazing for the Prog purest, I've always said it's Nektar's Dark Side of the Moon !! ✌🎼 I posted in more detail on your side 1 reaction, please tell me what you thought 👍🎶
Justin as far as popular to some of the fans of your channel ???? I will be very nice here and will restrain myself A lot !!!! 🤔 You know I'm 65' now and have seen all these great many Classic Prog and Rock bands many times during my years growing up at the right time and place in the Boston area with my older Brother and our friends back then, all I can say "Nicely" is the just don't get it !!! I've listened to many Thousands of hrs of music over the years and Nektar is one of the very Best Prog bands ever !! And respected by their peers in Prog/Rock !! Hackett/Howe/ Jon Anderson come to mind. So don't let it bother you at all, I've dealt with it for years, and when I talk to someone about music I always ask "Hey have you heard of King Crimson/ Gentle Giant/ Nektar/ Hawkwind ?? 🧐 If ther reply back "Glossy-eyed" 😳 Then I know the are just mainstream listeners and just "Don't Get it" !!! So have no Fear Justin it is one of the Best Prog albums !! So Prog on Justin ☺🦗🎶✌
I CAN SEE OH I CAN FEEL Best song of this album tbh, although I find it a bit weak overall...it's really just a medley, although the music is nice and pleasant. The first side of Recycled is a real "prog" song IMO
It got a lot better toward the end (for a first listen, anyway). It made me think of _Birth Control_ in places (toward the end). I don't know why, though. (And even of _The Scorpions_ in their proggish phase.) Again, I don't know why. There's definitely no good reason for me to be thinking of *Lonesome Crow* now, but it's one of those things you probably need to hear at least once, some day. th-cam.com/video/KRKTvZV1rkg/w-d-xo.html (I suppose it's not really "proggish", just "extended rock and blues").
I've got even less reason to be thinking again of *Skunk Anansie* - but I have, *Secretly* ... th-cam.com/video/OXQE3z3caQo/w-d-xo.html (This one's got an orchestra. Maybe that'll tempt you. Orchestra subsequently overwhelmed by Voice.)
I bought this on vinyl when it first came out and loved it. Then in the 80's it was released on CD, so of course I bought it. DISASTER! That first generation CD eliminated the guitar track and brought up the organ, which of course was a background instrument. Can you imagine what it sounded like without a guitar? It was awful, so I recorded the original vinyl to my hard drive. Thankfully it was re-released with the original tracks restored.
Hey, it's pretty good but there's a reason why it was never mentioned in the same breath as the true greats - it doesn't belong there. Everything is solid but I can't identify any 'not heard that before' or 'wow' passages that happen every couple of minutes in the top 10. I have mused before as to whether they might have been bigger had they worked out of the UK rather than West Germany, but I doubt it. Number 58 in Prog Magazine's 'Top 100 Prog Artists' and that sounds about right to me.
Nektar were about the phrasing and melody, not technical genius per se, and that's fine by me...then again, they made Recycled, and side 1 of that is pretty damn technical.
Hi JP. DP from UK, on another glorious day (My Friend The Sun). The word that comes to mind when listening to this album is decent. I remember Nektar back in the 70s, but at no point did I see them challenging the prog heavyweights. Two long tracks? No, separate songs spliced together, as many bands tried back then, but the classic long songs usually held together as a single piece with themes and melodies developed, musical complexity and virtuosity, and/or a coherent story line. I do like it, and I agree it's accessible, but I can also see why it's not lauded as an all-time classic. P.S. my song ref My Friend The Sun is by Family.
@@CAdams6398 his vocals are better than the brilliant Roger Waters, who made outstanding albums with Pink Floyd. But then again most people sing better than Waters
Hey Justin I sent this before but lost it with Computer issues just before sending it 😣 So Roye Albrighton's playing was all about Atmosphere, melodies and textures and Solos where they fit and always just right. In the 70s he play a Custom built "Gibson-like" ES-335 {8-String} guitar !! Yes I said 8 strings, I forget the brand builder now but the top and bottom strings were Doubled adding to the sound textures he could make with the effects of the day Roye's Echoplex delay, Wah-Wah, Fuzz & Distortion pedals. With the pics I sent ...sorry they are small their are few good 1970s pics out there but you can see the "Koool" effects of Mick Brockett's light show and if you look hard at Roye's guitar Headstock you can see the 8 string tuner knobs for the guitar. 🧐 Well just some more Nerd-ass info 😆 of my Brother (16) yrs working in Music instrument stores in that era !! 👍🎼🎸🎹🥁🎻🎷🎤🎶 Enjoy the pics everyone ✌ live.staticflickr.com/65535/50108149647_0d124f167d_b.jpg .... www.pooterland.com/Images/Nektar_Lightshow_01.jpg ... www.pooterland.com/Images/Nektar_Lightshow_02.jpg ... www.pooterland.com/Images/Nektar_Lightshow_12.jpg ... www.pooterland.com/Images/Nektar_Lightshow_11.jpg ...

Another standout album from Nektar is 1975's Recycled, which featured U.S. keyboardist and synthesizer specialist Larry Fast.
Recycled is another fantastic Nektar record.

@@Rosiepoop Sure do! The light show guy was considered a member of the band.
I saw them perform some of it when they supported Frank Zappa at Wembley Empire Pool in 1973. After that I tried to see them as often as I could.

(Boy)
I can see you - I can hear you (x4)
I can see it all when I look into your eyes
I can sense it all when I look into your skies
I can see, oh I can feel
You are Me and that’s the way It has to Be, You are Me...
I can feel it all when I look behind your smile
I can hear it all when I look behind your mind
I can sense, oh I can feel
You are Me and that’s the way It's always been, You are Me...
Bluebird - what do you see ?
Bluebird - what do you feel ?
(Bluebird)
I feel everything, I see life, I see the stars
And I can’t care for anything
(Boy)
Bluebird - where have you been ?
Bluebird - what have you seen ?
(Bluebird)
I’ve been everywhere
I’ve seen all around
And I can’t warn against anything...
(Boy)
Smile if you want to - Not when you can
Break down if you want to - Not when you can
Follow me home ‘cos Tomorrow...
Tomorrow never comes
(Bluebird)
You stand before me - Fate in your hand
You say tomorrow will never begin
Follow me home - ‘cos Today is
Tomorrow, yesterday
Walking down lonely roads, what do I see ?
Won’t be long till they come again - free
Name that place, name mine too
Where will we be ?
Won’t be long - till they crucify me
Here they come (x3)
See them run
See them run (x3)
...watch them go now...

I can see you - through the morning mist
And the evening too
I can hear you - getting closer now to the living truth
You say that life has no end
Believe me you’ve go to pretend
Because I can see you - coming closer now to the living truth
Gotta let it grow, someday you’re gonna let it show
(Bluebird)
I can see you...
come close to me and I’ll tell you true
I can feel you - listen carefully to what I say to you
I tell you life has no end
There’s no need for you to pretend
‘Cos you see You - believe Yourself - that’s all you have to do
Gotta let it grow, someday you gotta let it show
You know that I can’t stop it (x3)
You know, you know that I
You know that I can’t stop it (x2)
You know, you know that I
You know that I can’t stop it
Let it grow - you don't need no sympathy
You don’t realize - how much you needed me
You will realize it’s better when you give
"Cos your life is longer than you live"
The laws of nature are to heal the wounds of man
Use them right and they will help you if they can
Wrongly used and you’ll only harm yourself
Then it’s too late to come to me for help
Don’t walk away - give it a chance
Let it grow
Let it grow
Let it grow

Take a trip back in time
Live evolving growing higher
Not just space that bluebird sees
In the sea a new domain
Evolution
Swimming forth came on land
Beast to ape grasping hands
Thinking kill never ran
Lived in caves enter man
Evolution
Tamed the fire prophecied
Length of day and height of sky
Made his tools chased his meal
Then progressed he built the wheel
Falling down from the heaven
Twisted leaves - so twisted
Still so strong after all those
L-I-E-S
I can see the meaning
Twisted trees - so twisted
Spin the wheel of never ending
T-I-M-E
Blessed where the ways of the creatures in their caves
Who hold the last clue in the life of me and you
They had to fight to make good their rights
And bluebird could not stir
Who - who made you and me
Whose are the eyes of the world that look at me
Falling from their saddles
Victories lost battles
Spin the wheel of never ending
L-I-F-E
Blessed were the ways of the sinners in their graves
Who saved the last place in the shade for me and you
Forty thousand teeth were beared
As if to rip the flesh already torn
Who - who made you and me
Whose were the eyes of the world
That looked at me
I was the first to see it all when rainbow
crossed the bridge at dawn
Forty billion miles I came to tell this
tale already told
Who - who made you and who made me
Whose are the eyes of the world we're
looking through
Remember the first time
I came here the last time
Remember the future will always be there
But now that it's over
I'll see you the next time
Remember the future is yours
And now that you've seen me
I see it's behind you
Remember the future will always be there
And so I have told you
You see what's before you
Remember the future is yours

Follow me home 'cos today is tomorrow yesterday
Walking down lonely roads
What do I see
Won't be long till they come again free
Name your place, name mine too
Where will we be
Won't be long till they crucify me
Here they come
See them run, watch them go now
(BOY)
I can see you through the morning mist
and the evening too
I can hear you getting closer now to the
living truth
You say that life has no end
But believe me you've got to pretend
Because I can see you coming closer now to
the living truth
Let it grow, someday you're gonna let it show
(BLUEBIRD)
I can see you come close to me
And I'll tell you true
I can feel you listen carefully to what
I say to you
I tell you life has no end
There's no need to pretend
'Cos you see you, believe yourself that's all
you have to do
And let it grow, somehow you gotta let it show
You know that I can't stop it
You know, you know that I...
Let it grow, you know you need no sympathy
You don't realise how much you needed me
You will realise it's better when you give
'Cos your life is longer than you live
The laws of nature are to heal the wounds of man
Use them right and they will help you if they can
Wrongly used and you'll only harm yourselves
Then it's too late to come to me for help
Don't walk away give it a chance
Let it grow

Had never heard of Nektar till the late 70's when I came across Remember The Future in a "used" record bin; and bought it based on the album cover alone. Being thrilled to come across Nektar by chance, I then purchased 4 more "used" Nektar albums (still have them), and became a huge fan!! Unlike the fame of Yes, Genesis, ELP, no one I know had ever heard of Nektar. Great stuff!! THANK YOU JP for bringing them to light! Please do more Nektar!!
Peace and Love to all!
A classic from yesteryear.
Fantastic wasn't it Justin ☺
The first two Albums "Journey to the Center of the Eye" and Tab in the Ocean" are much more complexed Classic Spacey Prog and RTF is an easier listen for the Newbie but just as Amazing for the Prog purest, I've always said it's Nektar's Dark Side of the Moon !! ✌🎼
I posted in more detail on your side 1 reaction, please tell me what you thought 👍🎶
Justin as far as popular to some of the fans of your channel ????
I will be very nice here and will restrain myself A lot !!!! 🤔
You know I'm 65' now and have seen all these great many Classic Prog and Rock bands many times during my years growing up at the right time and place in the Boston area with my older Brother and our friends back then, all I can say "Nicely" is the just don't get it !!!
IMO one of the best Progressive Albums of the 70s. I not understand the critics here posted. Anyway, it doesn't must fit to everyone.
I CAN SEE
OH I CAN FEEL
Best song of this album tbh, although I find it a bit weak overall...it's really just a medley, although the music is nice and pleasant.
The first side of Recycled is a real "prog" song IMO
Recommend Nektar Sunday night at London Roundhouse.
album?
@@lemming9984 yes
Lots of good stuff there.
And now on to "Recycled"!
This rivals DSOTM as some of the best Prog rock ever put down.
Nektar’s music is less sophisticated than Yes or Genesis. To me that is not a problem. I enjoy them equally.
It got a lot better toward the end (for a first listen, anyway). It made me think of _Birth Control_ in places (toward the end). I don't know why, though. (And even of _The Scorpions_ in their proggish phase.) Again, I don't know why.
There's definitely no good reason for me to be thinking of *Lonesome Crow* now, but it's one of those things you probably need to hear at least once, some day. th-cam.com/video/KRKTvZV1rkg/w-d-xo.html
(I suppose it's not really "proggish", just "extended rock and blues").
I've got even less reason to be thinking again of *Skunk Anansie* - but I have, *Secretly* ... th-cam.com/video/OXQE3z3caQo/w-d-xo.html
(This one's got an orchestra.
Ugh! Reading (some )these comments what a bunch of pompous fools
Justin, if you had consumed enough lsd, mushrooms or other conscientiousness altering substances it would all make perfect sense. lol
Jesus
Hey, it's pretty good but there's a reason why it was never mentioned in the same breath as the true greats - it doesn't belong there. Everything is solid but I can't identify any 'not heard that before' or 'wow' passages that happen every couple of minutes in the top 10. I have mused before as to whether they might have been bigger had they worked out of the UK rather than West Germany, but I doubt it. Number 58 in Prog Magazine's 'Top 100 Prog Artists' and that sounds about right to me.
I think that's a fair appraisal, Ken.
Nektar were about the phrasing and melody, not technical genius per se, and that's fine by me...then again, they made Recycled, and side 1 of that is pretty damn technical.
Not bad but probably not my cup of tea. I prefer part one. The guitar work, however, is awesome.
I never was much of a Nektar fan, but I have to give a nod to their Down To Earth album, I Like most of it, I really do think it's good!
Definitely one of my favorite Nektar albums - I always considered it their "Sgt. Pepper".
Twee, tedious, and far too long... And boy did they need a different vocalist.
?!
@@CAdams6398 I'll just have to take your word for that... Unless you or your band have some stuff on YT, in which case I'd give it a listen.
@@CAdams6398 his vocals are better than the brilliant Roger Waters, who made outstanding albums with Pink Floyd. But then again most people sing better than Waters
Hey Justin I sent this before but lost it with Computer issues just before sending it 😣
So Roye Albrighton's playing was all about Atmosphere, melodies and textures and Solos where they fit and always just right. 🧐
Well just some more Nerd-ass info 😆 of my Brother (16) yrs working in Music instrument stores in that era !! 👍🎼🎸🎹🥁🎻🎷🎤🎶
Enjoy the pics everyone ✌
