- Have you gone to sew your facings to your garment and found them to be smaller and they do not fit??? what has gone wrong?? today I'm spilling all my secrets in relation to using interfacing on our sewing projects: facings, collars, plackets, cuffs, hem areas, zipper areas.....
I have put traditional interfacing methods to the test and compared them to BLOCK FUSING so you can see what method gives you the most accurate result. Seeing is believing!
I am also sharing lots of footage with examples on how to interface pieces only partially whilst still using block fusing in order to keep the shapes as close to the original as possible.

I think there will always be those persons who like to spur negativity. Karina, your videos are a!ways educational and entertaining. I never notice the length of your videos. They seem long enough to cover the subject matter and short enough to keep our attention. Now, regarding the perceived waste of interfacing and fabric, your methods have produced a plethora of awesome apparel. That speaks for itself. Now my last "point" I spend a lot of time watching TH-cam. I can't begin to count the number of times that I have recommended your channel. I really can't understand why people feel the need to write a complaint! Why! You can tell the length of a video before you start watching - so if you don't like long ones - don't watch. Your videos aren’t too long at all. If anything, they are not long enough 😂! I noticed that you did it in one of your videos and only block fuse now. Love the crisp and professional result. Pressing as you go is important too. Taking your time, hand basting and doing things properly are worth it ❤

This and stay stitching will literally change the sewing game if youre not already doing it. ❤I love your longer videos. You are not a shortcut sewer, you are not like these pattern company tutorials which are trying to sell you something as well as show basics. This is where we learn beyond basics. You and the Closet Historian have helped me create a couture sewn (basically) wardrobe that I love and am proud of. This time is invaluable and the time you have spent to bringing this to us is absolutely priceless. Time is all we have as humans really and where we put our attention is very important. Some people need to see and do to learn. I am one. Your format is the best for sewing the way i would like ro sew. I need longer format and repetition and you are an excellent teacher for my learning style. And I know for a fact many many others feel that way. You can see in every comment section how helpful and how much value you provide. There's really none to compare to your tutorials unless youre actually watching a paid class. I cant afford that so i am so very grateful for you. The people who want quick can very clearly see how long videos are before clicking. Sounds like a failure on their part to me to understand what a classroom looks like. Nobody else is talking about this topic unless youre in a couture class or something. This is hands down the best way. ☺️💚

I was going to say the same about hand basting. Can you imagine not staystitching? Karina gives great info. I like watching these even though I usually know the info already. It’s a pleasure to watch. There’s always at least one thing new I learn

Wow, when you compared the pattern pieces with the traditionally interfaced facings it was perfectly clear that it’s impossible to get the correct shape by this method.
Who ARE these persons who complain bc a video is too long? I watch some other content creators who actually teach and apparently they receive the same complaints. I don't understand. Each video has a time stamp. If you don't have the "time" then simply move along to a less thorough content creator. There are many out there; theirs is more of a " show and tell" format. I have sewn for over sixty years. Unlike Karina I didn't have a mentor. So, through Nation's videos I receive the benefit of her relative who was a professional seamstress ( a win) plus Marine's own research and experience ( another win). I have learned much from Karina and can't count the number of times that I have recommended her channel. Thank you Karina for sharing so much with us.
Your tutorials are so valuable, Katrina, thanks once again! We spend so much money on patterns and beautiful fabrics. It really pays to learn a lot of these tips and tricks ASAP. Block fusing is something I’ve learnt from you early on, and that’s from you being repetitive with your tips and habits. The more we see as normal practice, the more we do.
I am so relieved that the problems I have with interfaced pieces aren't just me cutting it wrong every time. 😅

You are right. I had a teacher like this. I was lucky. So long ago. Before Karina was born. They don’t offer this anymore. I watch this even though I already know the info because I appreciate things well done.

Hand basting. I discovered this on my own many years ago. It means you can machine sew with no struggle. I cringe when I watch people sew awkward areas jammed with pins.
Where is my head-slap emoji! what a smart technique!. As long as I have been sewing I haven't tried block interfacing - but I get it! I will use this technique on my next project and see how I do! I’ve made a few jackets and coats and have found block fusing really improves the fit and look, especially with Boucle knits. A knit interfacing allows some ‘give’ but also provides enough structure to prevent sag. I especially appreciated your tips for applying interfacing along edges. Thanks for a great video.
I began sewing when there was no fusible interfacing and was taught to cut the pieces separately. They were always wonky too! I just carried on the same with fusible interfacings with the same results. Brilliant idea to fuse first then cut as one.
The same for me.
I somehow missed this one when it came out, or more likely I had to put it off because of the length and meant to come back to it, then forgot about it. I don’t care how long your vids are, I always learn something from them. I just have to decide when to watch some of the longer ones, but don’t we all have to decide when and where we watch our TH-cam channels? I love your content Karina. Keep on teaching! I’ve sewn off and on for 40 years, but this thing called TH-cam has really expanded my sewing knowledge.

Hmmmm. I wonder if this is why I hate facings. I never get them to fit or lie flat! This looks like the technic I’ve been waiting for. And sure, I see this addressed in almost all of your videos, but now I finally get it. Thank you, Karina! I’m getting closer to being able to sew like you🥰
Me too. I hate facings because they never lie flat, and get in the way. Maybe if I start block fusing it will behave better.

Block-fusing 'just makes sense'.
As far as I'm concerned, it should be Standard Practice 🥇. With the use of the tracing wheel & tracing paper, and the "modified" technique, I don't see any evidence of excess waste. I Love it and WILL begin using this in my sewing.

I watched Sandra Betzina do block fusing and I’ve done it that way for years. However, I’ve also used Casey from Pattern Scout’s method of sewing three sides of a facing and interfacing wrong sides together at 1/8”, flipping it out and ironing before sewing it to the main garment. It’s so neat on the finished garment.
You’re like me. Im old. I learned from Nancy Zieman, Shirley Adams and Sandra Betzina many years ago. Also Singer tailoring books and Threads Magazine. Karina is doing great work like them.
I fell asleep watching this and finished the next morning...lol. very informative and love the tracing paper and block fusing tips. This will definitely improve my sewing and the finished look. Thank you for sharing

I have been using your block fusing methods for quite a while and it really makes a big difference. At first I thought it would waste fabric and interfacing, but when using the traditional method of cutting separately, you end up with bits that aren’t usable and it takes more time. Thanks for another great techniques video, Karina!
When I first learned about it years ago, I thought it would be too thick but I was wrong. it eliminates distortion.

Good advice based on good practice. Interfacing, fusible especially, can be expensive, but the way you demonstrated it shows hot to do it with minimal loss.

I love your longer videos and very much appreciate that you provide the 'why' of things - it's how I *want* to learn. I had a recent bag-making project go slightly wonky during the interfacing process (fortunately not disastrously) so, the second time I made that bag, I tried block fusing. As you say, it really is a game changer. The result is much more accurate and it's easier too. So... Karina, you have made a really helpful video here! It feel like you are verbalising my thoughts about the struggle with distorted mismatched pieces even when you feel like have done your very best work. As a self taught sewist I simply followed the pattern instructions, but you have opened my eyes to “sewing to get the results I want”, not generally assuming that the instructions will do that. Needing to understand the _why_ of a thing is very important to me. I think thats why i gravitate toward your instructional videos.
I don’t always watch them straight away, i need to wait until I have enough time. But i just about always come back to them, then find them again down the track when i actually need the technique.

Thank you! I love all your attention to detail. I like to take my time when I sew and get every detail as perfect as I can (without making myself crazy. Haha). I sew partly because I can fit my body how I like to and partly because I like to create beautiful quality garments. Most of my clothing is casual or fairly casual office attire. Thank you so much for this excellent and detailed tutorial. Last week I quit making a tank top because the facings and pieces had become so misshapen that it ruined the project. I will incorporate block interfacing and stop cutting on the fold in the future.

This is a great video! I've been watching you since 2019. I will always block fuse! I have a Love Notions Vivace top undone since it was introduced, because l didn't block fuse the facing, and the facing is distorted and doesn't fit the neckline. I always recommend your channel to sewists that are have issues with their sewing. Thank you for all your videos.
