Lists of facts about Japan are almost always half misleading or straight up inaccurate, and half basic facts that everyone already knows. (Did you know JAPANESE VENDING MACHINES?!) So we've been trying to collect interesting facts about Japan that are actually true for years, and we finally reached 50!
This video took the most time to make out of all our videos so far--more than 250 hours!! We put weeks into researching facts, tossing ones that either weren't true or as interesting as we first thought, and verifying the necessary ones with statistics from official sources (do you know the pain… of trying to translate 100+ page government reports…). Those sources are in the description box. We called agencies to ask them questions directly. We visited museums. We drove all over the place and filmed a lot of B roll (oh so much B roll). So here it is, basically everything we know about Japan (well, maybe not everything). Some of you may recognize a couple facts in here that we've talked about in past videos! I really hope you guys enjoy this video!!

That's probably because the 200 year old house was built better than the new homes they have as far as structural integrity
Yeah see Japan is in the Ring of Fire. So Volcanic activity, earthquakes, and tsunami's are a big problem over there. Structures are constantly being made more efficient.

I live at the Northern End of Germany..and in Summer it starts to become day at around 3am oLo'' At 4 its already bright as day... and its only really Dark between 12Am and 2Am lel xD

Okay, story time on number 35.
I was a young, naive exchange student, with maybe a month left in Japan while I was studying abroad. All was going pretty darn well that day. One of my classes was cancelled, and I had been up late the night before finishing an assignment, so marched my merry self back to my dormitory, was sending my daily photos to my friend in the US, and preparing to take a nap.
Out of the corner of my eye came one of those mother flipping centipedes crawling around on my curtains, easily a foot long. Again, being the naive American I was, the biggest insect I'd personally witnessed at that point were locusts and wolf spiders. I shrieked and then, crying, proceeded to message my friend about the atrocity as if she could fly over at hyper speed to kill a bug for me. My Japanese was rudimentary at best, but there was no way I could sleep with that bug in my room, so I had two options: wait upward of four hours for my neighbor to return from class to either kill it or help me ask someone to kill it, which could give the demon ample time to hide until it could kill me in my sleep, or utilize the magical powers of Google Translate to attempt to get my dorm parents to help.
Cue 20 minutes of me trying to explain to my dorm dad that there was a huge bug in my room that needed to die, partially based on us tip tapping words and phrases into cheap little flip phones and showing one another because we weren't sure if we were saying the word right (me with Japanese, him with English). Once he finally realized what I was saying he motioned to give me a little vacuum cleaner that A) couldn't sweep up something that big, and B) I'm such a cautious person in general I couldn't move fast enough to suck it up without it running away. Instead of risking such horrors, I lied and told him I was allergic xD Which he took super seriously and grabbed some heavy duty bug spray and a larger than life fly swatter, to join me on the epic quest of ridding my room of this bug. Needless to say he didn't get what I meant by "big bug" when I was telling him, because he was horrified too when he saw the thing! But within minutes the beast was finally dead. My neighbor later pointed out that my room was probably the perfect temperature for bugs to feel comfortable at, because while the rooms had AC I was perfectly used to my family and college dorms keeping buildings at a solid 80 degrees, so needless to say I spent my last month burrowed under blankets and in sweaters to make my room nonviable for life of any kind.
And thus, the story of how I nearly died in Japan comes to a close .u.

26. The numbers are backwards in the first shot! Osaka did buy a 60 Hz generator and Tokyo bought a 50 Hz generator, as explained immediately afterward. 60 Hz is south and 50 Hz is north.

Fun fact that I didn’t know about ties. The stripes run differently in Japan than America. I went and checked the tie I bought my husband from my last visit to Japan....and b”gosh, Jun was right!! But then Jun is always right😉😉
hey rachel and jun (idk if this sounds stupid but) could you maybe make a video explaning the japanese health sytem etc. I am really curious about this i have read a bit about it on the internet but i would like to hear what someone who lives as a citizen in japan thinks about the health system of japan!
The last time this was mentioned, I went around and checked. The ties available in Croatia today have the same pattern as in Japan. The ties of the old times (of the above mentioned baron Trenk's soldiers) were all single-coloured and red.

That 50/60hz thing is seriously mind boggling.
You should see how electrical grids are in other countries that had to purchase the generators from foreign companies. It gets really weird.
I found it fascinating that they have Micros that run on 50/60 Hz.

6:25 hah! In scandinavia, the sun never really goes down in the middle of summer, especially if you're very north. On the flipside though, on the winters it's the opposite. The sun goes down at 3 p.m and goes up at 8-9 a.m. November, december is pretty depressing... Go to school/work it's dark, come home, it's dark.

The reason kitchen knives are sharper than katanas isn't due to a lack of sharpening methodology in katanas. It's due to the fact that a katana needs to be sharp _and_ flexible, so it doesn't break when cutting. A harder steel can hold a sharper edge, but a harder steel also is less flexible and breaks more easily. So katanas have to compromise between sharpness and flexibility. They're still plenty sharp though. (One way katanas accomplish this is through differential hardening.)
Kitchen cutlery doesn't need to be as flexible as a katana because it isn't exposed to the same longitudinal stresses as a sword. You can pretty much focus on sharpness without worrying about flexibility.

As you know, katanas also have areas of three distinct hardness levels as well as differential hardening for the needs of the sword - core, back, and edge.

Konglim Khoo, that would affect individual swords, not katanas as a whole vs. knives as a whole. That was the claim Rachel made-- that kniveS can now be made sharper than katanaS, due to improvements in knife technology. 10:23
Plus you waaaay overstate the differences that would exist in "quality of the metal" among swords made by the same skilled swordsmith.
My original point was that knives and swords serve different purposes, so they have different needs when it comes to attributes like sharpness and flexibility. That's still a better explanation than just saying "Kitchen knives can be made sharper than swords now!" Plus, any good katana is already razor sharp. Making a distinction between the sharpness of the two based upon the TECHNICAL ABILITY TO SHARPEN them is misleading at best.

dip.C you either know how thick the bread is sliced by that brand or judge by eye or buy unsliced bread. Usually in america all the prepacked loaves are the sameish slice size unless marked otherwise but artisanal breads tend to be the size that that specific bread was traditionally cut at. And sometimes its just whatever they want it cut at. My family buys mostly unsliced bread honestly, or we make our own. XD
The only reason I can identify some cicadas is from catching so many in Animal Crossing: New Leaf... which is an originally Japanese game...

Those of us in the Midwest would be right at home. Sunrise is at 4:55am in the summer, and sunset is at 4pmish in the winter.

The cicadas here (just north of Dallas Texas) are so loud that you have to go inside to have a conversation this time a year.
Yeah, my family and I used to live in Dallas for many years. Our German friends and relatives couldn't get the sound out of their heads after hearing cicadas for the first time. My neighbour friends and I used to tie little firecrackers to the cicadas and set them off into the sky. Bang! Well, that was 1970s when things were different for the kids.
It's the same in Chicago!
They're quite loud in Florida as well. You can easily hear them inside on a hot day. It's why when I first heard them in a anime during a summer scene, it felt so natural!

@@rachelrecycles369 In such places people can adopt the times of an area further south in the country or many go by Saudi Arabian time. Otherwise northern Finland would only allow you half an hour to eat every day for the month of Ramadan

Wish you would have added a tiny bit more to no.8, i.e. the lack of street names. The block and number system also includes the age of the structure, with no. 1 of block X being the oldest or first address in that block. That is why the numbers within a block are sometimes very random in placement. So, the system is only spatially accurate to a point.
There are several historic forces at play as to why this is so. Some of these include, most land previously under the control of a monarch or emperor, limited usable land, rapid and continuous rebuilding, frequent disasters or destruction, and even the level of literacy.
The type of numbering system stems from and helps reinforce the mental map that a community uses.

To be fair, a lot of places have maps with the numbered regions posted somewhere so maybe people just used to use maps, same as we did back in the day. :p
Simon and Martina (Some other youtubers) mentioned this once in a podcast. They called somebody to pick them up, but Simon and Martina were waiting on one side of the block and the driver was on the other side of the block, and it took them a while to realize. I'm not sure if this was the cause, but it may have been. I'm sure it isn't a problem most of the time for locals, but I'm sure it has to come up

They started doing their podcast on youtube recently, but I think this was before that, when they only had it on SBS PopAsia. I think it was just within the past couple of months, but I don't remember exactly when. Definitely not too long ago. The overarching conversation had something to do with how Martina was saying she couldn't really stay mad at most people in Japan and how polite they are or something like that. This particular story she brought up to illustrate how the taxi driver was so apologetic afterwards even though it wasn't really his fault, and even though she was upset when she thought he was late as soon as he apologized she wasn't upset anymore.
I didn't know they did podcasts on SBS PopAsia :O Iwonder if it's still available. i'll look into it.

Hi, I really like this video as it reveals more about japan and find it interesting and informative that I shared it with my students. Guess what, they loved it too and find some of the things there are very interesting such as the such as the cute school buses. I find that this video is really creative and look forward for your next videos.

Well in some banks when they get robbed they put paint explosives in, so when the robbers open them they get doused in paint that doesn't wash off.
But yeah, imagine how easy I'd be for the police to find a suspect running from the scene of a robbery when they have vibrant colour all over them!

The closest thing I can think of that we have in the US is, in some clothing stores, the clothes have a magnetic tag/clip thing on them that can only be removed at the register once you pay for them. Otherwise, if you try to remove it forcefully, it'll let out a bunch of ink, or dye that is hard to wash off
As for convenience/grocery stores, there's just a bunch of cameras everywhere. Or, if the store can't afford enough cameras, they're placed in locations like at the entrance/exit, or right at the register

There's much more than cute animals and pop culture icons. Each prefecture in Japan has its own mascot, so you'll see them materialised as construction barriers too (a good fact they missed). For example, Iwate's Sobacchi and Miyagi's Musubimaru!
