    Oh my god, so many reminiscences of our time owing our boat the first year in Sweden, trips to Bil Tema and just crawling around finding new problems to fix 😅

      Yea so much to do all of the time, I think it's a lot to deal with on the first year but we are getting there. The electric toilet is also better than I expected, wanted to avoid having to deal with blockages if possible. Thanks for the compliment :)

    " The box is pretty big" - but it saves the heater. And: Be glad to have this. In many boats the hoses for hot air or ventilation are simply laid on the floor or some edge and so easily damaged. I would appreciate that box. If it's smaller - don't know whether it will stand the heat. Webasto told me, the hoses should be save to more than 100deg C.

    Regarding storage in your trunk, I would build a raised floor at the level of the top of the box with compartments for rarely used items. In the rest of the space I would glue horisontal slats of wood to the hull and screw mount a plywood board on top like a 'sheet rock cladding' that can be used to mount all kinds of fixtures in. It can also act as a base for shelving.

      Thanks very much for the advice, it has definitely given me some ideas. I have bought some plastic boxes from IKEA so far and it's working out pretty well but will have a look again in the winter. I am also looking at fitting the anchormatic windlass during the winter, will have to see what it looks like after that's gone in. thanks again for the great idea thought. Cheers, Chris

    "The bulkhead is not laminated" - sadly yes. Properly laminating them to the hull is time consuming. I'm afraid you can expect this only to higher price boats. This shall not be an excuse!
    Also the handrails: Great that you installed it. But this should be already done by the yard.

      Hi, the bulkheads themselves are laminated into the hull, Hanse also say that the grid is also, I have not found the grid lamination yet though. True with the hand rails, it would have been nice if they did that. Cheers

    Please rethink the situation at the stern.
    On nearly all boats there is an issue with the stern light: As one installs the outboard or something similar, the viewing angle of the stern light is limited - it's hard, not to obstruct.
    I already thought of constructing some support for that light some 10 - 20 cm of the stern, so it may shine behind the outborder or anything similar.

      Good idea, this year we are actually moving the outboard to the other side and we now have an integrated stern anchor making it a little easier to do. You have a good point though :)

    We sailed entire Mediterranean Sea with Hanse 445 without a glitch. Read your map right, learn how to sail right. Sometimes shit hits the fan unfortunately. Enjoy your sailing, life is short. Stop complaining. Now is a great chance to spend wonderful time with your loved one in solidarity. Screw the Covid 19, enjoy your life.

      @@SailingAurora What's brilliant about documenting your trials and tribulations on a TH-cam channel is that, these, shall we say, roadblocks that make life interesting but annoying, can be turned into a useful, fascinating story. What if Odysseus sailed back from Troy directly to Ithaca, and it all went perfect, dream sail, the wind behind him, and he sailed "happily ever after"? Myself, it impresses me to the stoic attitude of folks like SV Delos's Brian Trautman, maybe he edits screaming tantrums stuff out, but I highly doubt it, because any type of situation that would leave the ordinary person knocked flat, he finds a way to make it better, for example when the engine failed as they were motoring a dinghy in the Amazon. So they rowed, and got more out of it because of the quietness.

    Nice! No way any yacht builder that gives you lots of spare door hinges and latches with a new boat is crazy! It’s to me basically saying our hinges and laches we use are so cheap poor quality we know they will fail…..so have this bag of spares!!!

      Cheers Jon, yea if you guys had those hatches installed it shouldn't prove too much of a problem until someone pushes them too far back (that's what Lewmar said anyways)

      So far these hatches are still in my spec, but i am really on the fence with this option. Not just because of this problem Chris had, but its adding "complexity" to a structural element of the boat. Would you consider these as absolutely necessary in the context of comfort and ventilation in the cabins? (i will only have the port cabin btw)

      @@anderslarsen5513 to be honest I haven't slept in the aft cabins, but I have noticed the charterers using them alot so I suspect they are pretty good to have. On the other hand the aft cabins are very roomy anyways so you can getaway without them. One real advantage is that this option also adds the window above the kitchen stove, now this is very good to have. In all honesty I would probably say this option is worth it. /Chris

      We went for the extra hatch package only to get the one above the galley/cooker that we use all the time. I understand Lewmar are up to 3rd gen on these hatches, we had problems with glass seals but lewmar been excellent.

      @@jonc919 OK, noted. Im a little confused to which hatch you are referring to. On the deck layout i can only see the 2 hatches that i see open in Chris' video, and i would assume they are both in the aft cabins, when both cabins are chosen. I also assume that the one to port is "over" the galley when there is no port aft cabin, but it sounds like you are both referring to another Hatch. The standard package mentions 6 hatches in coach roof, and then there is the upgrade package: "XC9404 2 openable hatches in deck windows next to companionway"

    Why is there always a problem with those hatches on boats in general, hope you get it fixed without any problems.

      Yea seen it on another Hanse 418 also, Lewmar are aware of it though and unofficially they are blaming Hanse for breaking them as they may be opening them too far in the factory and the yard workers are telling anyone when they break... fantastic :)

      @@SailingAurora hmm Ok. Maybe the Hanse yard has the same problem as by the Bavaria yard with to many temporary or underpaid workers. I know Bavaria is aware of the problem with employment of less experienced personal and according to their new strategy they will improve the build quality for the future.

      Hi Duncan, thanks very much. On a charter with this size of boat, they go for between €2500 and €3500 per week. The money is good but there are also big downfalls with chartering. I will do a video on them soon :)

    You mentioned the Keel Impact Sensor that will SMS if the boat has an impact. What brand is that? Also did it send you a text when the people chartering the boat ran Aurora aground?

      Hi there. The sensor that we have is called Pro Evo, from JRL Trading www.jrltrading.se/sakerhet/larmsystem/marinlarm/prosafe-batlarm/. But To be honest, we are not very happy with it. We have tested the alarm on land, with a hammer against the keel, and that worked fine, but no, we did not get a text when the charters ran the boat a ground. We also had a problem with the GPS sometimes being completely off and a few gad alarms, when there was no gas on or any leaks. So we cannot really recommend the system. If you know of any other system, we would be happy the hear about it. All the best, Chris & Tanja

    Also mad to swap out a new manual toilet for an electric toilet on a boat you want to charter!!! That’s going to give you so much maintenance every time someone puts something they shouldn’t done it!

      It actually worked out ok, the macerator on the toilet was very strong. As for the fittings, they are ok sturdy, none has broken but happy I got some spares

      @ modern boats are poor build quality. MDF for head doors!! Paper with wood print on instead of veneer. If they have veneer it’s so thin if you scratch it there is no way you can sand it out! Just built to cost, No quality any more in most boats.

    Re the grounding, The main bulkheads are glassed to the hull. If you look fwd from the saloon cushion backrests you will see not only is the saloon / fore cabin bulkhead glassed in but it's also quite thick. Other bulkheads are similarly glassed to the hull, for instance the one between the transom lockers and the aft cabins. The bunk fronts and other furniture modules aren't glassed to the hull, the theory being that the hull stiffness is achieved through the balsa cored topsides. Balsa core executed properly is more stiff than a foam cored hull. The hull matrix is "glued" rather than over laminated but I believe even Hallberg Rassy do the same and they are circa twice the price. The quality of the hull laminate in the Hanse is, imho, very impressive. Compare the deep gloss gelcoat to some of the other production boat builders and you will see the difference.

      Thanks for your comment Matt, sorry late to reply, summer has taken us sailing. I haven't had that much time to really look through the boat and figure everything out in great detail. I'm looking forward to doing that in the winter.       Are you seriously comparing the stiffness and built quality of the hull of a Hallberg Rassy to a (in your opinion very impressive) Hanse? A good analogy would be a comparison with dry spaghetti. After two decades a Hallberg is still like dry spaghetti and a Hanse is also still like spaghetti, but the cooked kind.

      @@ReinierMayer I made no such comments comparing the stiffness of one boat against another. I simply reassured a fellow owner that his boat was well manufactured. I simply said the laminate quality was impressive and the gelcoat is very fair. The only comment about HR was that the reinforcement matrix is glued to the hull and that even HR don't over laminate their matrix. Happy to be corrected on that detail. For what it's worth I was kind of referencing HR as an example of good practice. Your comments about spaghetti are.....well, just odd.

    how come this would be 3 weeks work? laminating some inside and few layers of epoxy on bottom of keel is 1-2 days work. what kind of scam shipyard is that to quote 3 weeks for this?

      Any work that could be done in two days for this kind of damage would not be sufficient. Just watch the repair series I documented

    I'm of the mindset "knock a few grand off the cost of this boat and keep the wipes and polish." Ive always wondered if Europeans can even recognize inflation. Historically it sure seems not. Is it genetic?

    That is so bad! A boat that can’t take a groundhog at 5 knots!!
    We are in a production boat that is 32 years old Amel Super Maramu, and it would easily take that.
    Our Friend also hit rocks at 8 knots in a Jenneau 49 Sun Odyssey. Stuck high on the rocks for 3 hours before it was towed off with 2 boats. One to heel it over while the other pulled it off.. scrapes to the bottom of the keel and gelcoat repair on the rudder. Hull fine, keel bolts fine…..Jenneau is definitely a production boat.
    Sorry mate I’ve sailed on many new Hansa yachts….they are built very poor indeed. Build quality is just cheap crap I’m afraid.

      I believe it's the same with a lot of the production boats, you get what you pay for. I am quite confident in our boat now though after sailing her for 5 years I have faith in her and wouldn't change for the moment

      @@SailingAurora not really, like I said we had a friend who ran aground on rocks at 8 knots in a Jenneau Sun Odyssey 49ds and just scrapes on the bottom of the bulb, few chips out of the bottom of the rudder. We have an Amel Super Maramu, that is a production boat but built very strong.
      My daughter works as mate on Super Yachts, she delivered a Swan 78 new from the factory in Finland, sailing it to the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, then back to the Mediterranean. Swan are known as a quality boat builder with a good reputation. The boat was over €7m and falling apart!

    Yep. I stopped watching. Please sell the boat and buy a secondhand real cruising yacht with a solid construction under the waterline (no sandwich), with steel ringes running along. All systems solidly build. Hallberg Rassy, x-yachts (cruising), southerly, breehorn, sweden, contessa, breehorn, island packets, etc those kind of yachts. Hanse are excellent boats for coastal cruising in easy waters (no sandbanks, rock formations those kind of things). And of course to enjoy comfort in harbours.

      After a ground, our boat has been fully rebuilt now and is very strong on the hull. You will also notice that Hallberg Rassy, X-Yachts etc use the same method of construction.. and trust me they are in the workshop have the exact same repairs, I have seen it. It is very difficult to build a performance yacht and have it also withstand a full stop ground at 6+ knots, the forces involved are just too great. Linjett on the other hand have done something pretty special with their swing keel, was interesting to see them ground that one.
