Don't get me wrong, when I was younger I was absolutely convinced that Oswald couldn't have done it alone, but the more I read over the years, the more it became clear that he could (for one thing, he achieved a "Sharpshooter" citation in the USMC) and did.

      That's always really impressive when a time travel story pulls it off well. Same with Star Trek First Contact, they go to time period the viewer has never seen before but manage to explain it (while still keeping some mystery) in a matter of seconds.

      Red Dwarf does these sorts of stories and concepts better than modern Hollywood blockbusters and streaming shows. They were doing Tenet and time-travelly multiverses before Christopher Nolan and Kevin Feige had made it through high school.
      And doing it better. With jokes!

    • @niymeh342

      I always figured that the internal consistency was this: the future crew kill the current crew, which undoes the entire sequence of events up to the point of the time drive being acquired (hence them needing to go through the reality bubbles to get it again). JFK killing his past self undoes the entire sequence of events starting with them getting the time drive, meaning they never went back to Dallas in the first place. Puts the audience in the same position as the conspiracy theorists in the 'was there someone behind the grassy knoll?' Official answer: Dunno.

    Cat cupping his groin in response to the cop's "Hands on heads!" is great.
    You can tell that Doug Naylor has done his research on the assassination, with the Dwarfers dressed as the Three Tramps. I like that this episode, much like Quantum Leap's JFK assassination episode, "changes" a fictional original history to bring it in line with what we know, with the guys sending Oswald up from the fifth floor to the sixth. Having that change the trajectory of the shot so that it necessitates the second gunman behind the grassy knoll is so clever.

    Ah Tika to Ride, one of the prime examples as to why s7 isnt the meh some people make it out to be... does it ever get back to s6 levels? No... does that matter?.. No, its still RD and its good RD, as all RD is good.
    Definitely one of my favorite RD episodes, and a good example of everything that makes RD unique, makes you laugh, makes you think, makes you go 'wtf?' and does it with a thread of heart. The gun used, the cop uniform, and the hobos, even the empty drink bottle! are all real conspiracy aspects to the assassination which is a great touch by the show runners.
    Id say the biggest issue with the rag s7-8 get, is simply due to us older RD fans... the changes in filming among other things etc, the 3-4 year gap, it is nice seeing new young reactors without those foibles in their mentality and views of the show from watching in real time coloring things. Which gives those 'meh to fandom' seasons some respite and redemption.

    There was more to the long gap between Series 6 and 7 than just Grant and Naylor’s partnership collapsing.
    First, Chris Barrie was starring in his own sitcom around this time called ‘The Brittas Empire’, and especially during Series 6, he had been growing disinterested in ‘Red Dwarf’ and was reluctant to the idea of coming back.
    Also, Craig Charles sadly had his name dragged through the mud, when an ex-girlfriend falsely accused him of breaking into her home and r***** her, and he spent time in prison for over three months He was only let out on bail after he had been attacked by another inmate wielding a knife, and was then acquitted when the trial revealed that the girlfriend was never r****.

    It's interesting watching this episode when recalling Kryten's throwaway line about shouting "Duck!" from behind the grassy knoll in season 3's Timeslides, as conversely the window scene in this episode (at 10.30) seems to imply that the second gunman theory wasn't part of the original history in the Red Dwarf universe. Does Kryten in Timeslides reference the new timeline when Kennedy shoots himself, even though the crew hadn't travelled back to 1963 at that stage? Timey-wimey, wibbly-wobbly and all that.

    Fun fact: all the scenes of the motorcade and the event itself were filmed for this episode, but they did such a good job of it that people really thought they had somehow got the rights to use the original footage.

    Lister becoming a cannibal... I remember absolutely losing it watching that the first time. Absolute hysterics how they built the "joke" of Kryten's lack of controls up to reach that climax.
    To be fair... You will by all means still enjoy S7 and S8. They aren't awful. They are just - generally - not up to the same standard as before when both of the original team were together. After that is when the show lost me... but, thanks to the Gallifrey Gals, I am looking at watching along with ya'll into the newer eras....

    Ok, so the main problem I have with this episode is that the whole premise of the series is that they can't get back to Earth. If they can just go back to Earth, why do they return to Red Dwarf? Why not just go back to their own time. End of series.
    I know there's a lot of Red Dwarf that contradicts itself, and it doesn't really matter. But _this_ is literally the whole point of the show.

    • @PassiveSmoking
      @PassiveSmoking 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The previous episode showed that when they used the time-drive willy-nilly they ended up becoming complete smegheads.
      But yeah, if they used it to do just that and then destroyed it then it'd be the end of the show. Which is obviously why they don't do that.
      The in-universe explanation I use when stuff like this comes up? They're kinda dumb.

    • @BlameThande
      @BlameThande 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      While I agree with this general objection, in this episode it's implied that the time machine is basically unpredictable, seeing as they ended up over two centuries off their target arrival date. Annoyingly, a few episodes later they imply that they can go to a specific place and time now, in which case...? "Timeslides" did this much more cleverly.

      Yeah, as much as I love the way they did the whole time travel with JFK thing. The fact that they were able to just beam straight back to Earth all of sudden just never made sense to me.
      Even if it was the 60s Lister would've jumped at the chance to go back and live on Earth, yet they treat it like they were just popping down the local takeaway.
