I love how in the old bus you can see the headlight housings protruding in the foot well. Never a better warning as to precisely what is going to happen if you screw up.
What has this world come to. Using your kneecaps as your primary crash protection built character. Crumple-zones? Why would you willingly show weakness? Airbags? Hot air I say. We've all gone downhill since the 1968 rule where manufacturers couldn't let the steering columns impale the driver.
always wanted a 23 window bus..my first car was a 72 superbug (wth McPherson front end),,drove that badass from Mexico to Massachusetts and everywhere in between,, just sold it last year (after 32yrsof ownership, felt like i was selling my child)..hard to beat an old school VW..
Seeing and hearing that Bug Bus brings back memories of the 70’s, being a kid on the California coast, going along with my Dad taking soup to the hitchhiking kids on Highway 1, the older kids from church playing guitar around a fire on the beach…. Kumbayah and Maranatha! So very cool to see the new one! If I didn’t need a truck, I’d probably get one of these. Trying to talk my wife into it, although it’s not something a good Lut’eran Wisconsinite considers, apparently 😂
Yup, I learned to drive in one of those . . . ours was a '67 as well, but we had buckets in front and a pass through to the second row. Same driving position, though, like sitting on a box and with the steering column between your legs. My step-dad said that if I learned to drive that, I could drive anything. Hmmm flat floor over the engine for kids, too . . . more then once my cousin Annie and I rode back there when I had a car full of cousins.
My first car was a '67 Bug. Your step-dad was correct. Driving an old VW taught you not only how to drive a manual, how to do your own repairs, but also to look way down the road, anticipate your moves, know your limitations, drive defensively, and watch out for the other guy. Best car (and worst car) I ever owned.
The transporters were body on frame, not “unibody”. The 3 horizontal “stripes” on the D pillar (?) gives props to the “Bay window Bus” built from 68 to 79. Fond memories of falling asleep in the rear on family vacations, Dad pulling the family camper behind a 71 Bay Window… the flat four screaming in 3rd gear crawling up a long mountain pass on I 75… at about 40 mph, haha! As always, we’ll done Tommy!
Only technically body on frame. The frame is welded so well to the body it might as well be one piece It's not like an old pickup: if you try to remove the frame for rust repair without specialist equipment might as well drive it through a sawmill with the balde at bumper height.
I'm a two-time Eurovan owner. I have driven and taken road trips in a T2. The driving experience of a T2 leaves a lot to be desired in today's world. Slowest vehicle on the road, noisy, no A/C. The engine is over-stressed and don't generally last long without a rebuild. They're really a curiosity on today's roads. Not safe, either. The Eurovan was far superior in every way, but unfortunately is no longer imported into the US. My Eurovan was an AXK 4 valve motor with 204 hp. Fuel economy was so-so at 16-20. But it had the handling, brakes and build quality of a German car. Sold it recently because at 20 years old a lot of parts are getting NLA. They really kept a lot of the good stuff of the Eurovan in the Buzz. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it gets here.
One of those old VW buses would be an awesome car for a low-speed road trip. Like travelling on Route 66 or something like that. Anything over 60 mph and you're going to have problems.
A fully restored example of the 23-window was the most expensive T1 gaveling at $197,000. It’s really hard to recapture the feeling you got from the T1, 2 and T3. I hope the ID Buzz does well. Would it be considered the T8?
no, an entire new car... Actually, they launched the T7 not that long ago, and... some might say they ruined the T line, at is not a T6 successor but rather a bigger Sharan (and I actually love it, as have a Sharan and wanted a larger version of it, instead of the bus-y T6.1
Everyone that’s owned a VW bus knows one of the best features is removing the middle seat. This gives you a great space to change when you get to the beach or trailhead. It also gives you a nice space for a picnic when you fold out the table. The ID Buzz rear seat eliminates this usefulness. It turns it into a disguised SUV. Hopefully the long wheel base fixes this. If so, I can’t wait to own one. Tommy, go borrow a T3 Westfalia and do a usefulness comparison video.
VW seems really hesitant to show us the longer U.S. version. Although I'm not quite ready to buy a fully-electric vehicle yet, I do wish VW (or Toyota? Honda?) were to allow the choice of a slightly smaller van here.
Type 1 was always the Beetle when I was in the scene. I had a 71 type 2 "bay window" these were known as split screens or "splitties". The most desirable in Europe was the crew cab pick up. Commercial vehicles were much rarer than privately owned.
@@OP941nine ;) lol. That old trope 20 min fast charging is a thing these days. Hyundai/Kia can do it. The tech exists. The whole point of a road trip is to get away from it all and relax. Taking 20 min breaks every 300 to 500 km or so is a good thing. Change for many people can be hard. About 100 years ago lots of folks actually opposed the introduction of the car especially in cities (yes, that did happen). Horse and carriage as well as walking in urban areas were considered the norm. And yea, we need less car traffic in cities. For longer road trips especially having a quiet ride (and still sporty and fun) is great. EVs are inherently more quiet and major manufacturers like Kia and Hyundai know how to build them. VW is finally getting the hint despite their criminal behavior during Dieselgate.
Do you know if they are going to bring a AWD version? Drove one of the first camperised versions. Not sure what year would be probably a 55 or 56. With the independent suspension rode a lot smoother than any other van type vehicle of the era.
Tommy, congrats on being invited to Amelia Concours d'Elegance! You have left your Dad in the mud! :) My Dad owned a Yellow & White Vanawagon, so the Buzz tugs at my heartstrings.
I prefer the’67 over the electric one. My opinion of the new one, it’s Ugly. I’ve driven the ole style VW bug it was a blast to drive. Personally I’m not a fan of EVS but I know that other people are. Tommy I enjoy all TFL: old, new, classics, buy or bust. Y’all keep’m coming.
Bouncing like crazy: "So smooth." Yes, a Buzz-Bug 🐞 or E-Beetle 🪲 would be cool, if they can make it with an affordable base option, and a 300 mile long range option.
The iconic "safety feature" on the original bus was that, if/when in a collision, there there would be absolutely NO suffering whatsoever - guaranteed.
Hope the pricing is good, I think it would have to be cheaper than a Model X due to worse battery/range, worse performance and the X has a lot of premium electric features as well as the seating space. I REALLY hope VW realizes this and doesn't try to be Tesla pricing just because their name is VW... Aside from that, if the price is right, this looks like a fun and unique family "van" and could have a lot of cool camping features, but I haven't seen too much on that. They COULD compete with the Model X by beating in pricing AND showing off what this can do in terms of "living on the road". Rivian started off well with that, but they failed on price and quality it seems. Hope VW doesn't make the same mistakes.
What road trip are u going on with 260 mile range. It's going to take u an extra 4 hours to go 500 miles at least. This is a city car. I say car and not bus or van because 5 seats isn't good for this.
Cool EV mini bus. Hope it’s a hit. As far as releasing the Beetle again, it won’t sell in the US. Too small unless its targeting daily commuters looking for a cheap car under 20k. Or VW should release a limited desert buggy edition. Giant tires and those crazy long exhaust pipes.

@@jaybeemhardscrote7466 🤣🤣
Hey bad safety teaches kids to drive safe.
Thumbs up for a laugh.
Perhaps if everyone drove in such peril then we would have less jerk drivers, one way or another.
I saw my first ID Buzz on the road in Dublin last week and it looked phenomenal out on the street
They've been showing this thing at auto shows since 2004

vw needs to stop teasing the NA market and show us the extended buzz that will be sold in NA
Can’t wait to see the USA production version! Hope they offer darker color interiors also
As long as they stay options, I'm tired of sitting in black plastic voids.
@@AHungryHunky that is true also
I think there will be a dark grey option. Isnt there one on the ID. 4?

If they bring this model in the US, my family is buying one. If they bring out a large 3rd row crossover / full-size minivan, we will pass.
I like the new one but I do wish it had the taller ground clearance of the older model.

It looks great ! Needless to say I’ll be getting one once they arrive here in the US.
Really worried it comes out as a full size minivan, 3rd row..
Post a link here to you're review once you get one, needless to say.

If they offered the ID Buzz with the 1.9L TDI for a much better price, I'd be highly interested. It looks fantastic.
It couldn’t be the same vehicle though.
I want the production Buzz to be great. I've been eyeballing since it's rumor.
Thanks Tommy. I agree with you, it would be neat if the new one had the extra windows at the top.

Must have been great fun driving around Amelia Island with all those classic cars on the road.
The EV beetle could be an everyman's car if dealerships don't ruin it.
$20k msrp, standard $30k dealer markup
i love this!! i would drive the heck outta this little thing!! it would be perfect for my family and my handyman business in the city
I learned to drive a manual transmission on one of these. It belonged to a family with a lot of children!
The tow rating is very light for the ID Buzz. It's a big improvement over the original.
What does that windshield cost If you get a crack in that windshield on that new id buzz?
Very cool Tommy. The European price converts to nearly $100k Canadian. Not sure what to expect but that money would also get me into the Merc EV van.
... thanks for this Tommy , really makes me miss my '69 Bus ...
Such a shame they limited the road trip fun factor by going only electric on the new version
Actually, electric is a lot more fun. Lots more acceleration and it's quiet which is nice for long road trips.

honestly just looking at it I'd rather have the old 1 unless it can fly in the air and underwater
in those days, there are a lot of lookalike of such vans.

Looks awesome but those seats definitely look like they get dirty quick
I remember the complaints about the Pontiac Transport large windshield. How times have changed 🤣. I owned a few VW vehicles. They are a lot of fun.
I've been waiting for them to get orders! I want one so bad!

AWD version with more range coming? It snows and lots of elevation changes where I live.
i wish they had kept the round looking bus headlights for the new buzz the new lights don't look as happy as the the old bus.
Now if we could get Hyundai to do a modern version of the origonal Tiburon id be a happy camper.

The T1, T2 and T3 are unsafe at any speed. They look nice, but that's it.
I will take the original VW bus any time…… fun and I can fix it myself
Hey VW, how about a cheaper van? A plug in hybrid with 50 miles all electric range. Most people would rarely buy gas.
I learned how to drive in a 69 bus
Tommy it's called a Combi! (Rolls eyes).
Basically a mediocre min van that happens to be electric and don’t worry it will be over priced
Would be great as a hybrid or gaser!
geesh, that upholstery in the new wagon looks filthy now. No chance it looks good in a couple of years.
I like the Buzz..
My friend has a 1966 23 window bus white over Gree that people have offered him $77K for it and he flatly refuses eveytime.
Those headlights in the new look so bad. Why do every car has to look menacing nowadays?
8:51 80 MPH -- I'd be terrified to go 80 in that.
The old bus has way more place. The new bus is more a Van then a bus.
Can the rear seats be removed, no one has answered that question yet!!
i like the gas samba.
I see this as a home run from Volkswagen.
Volkswagen Type 2: T1
Why did it come with Safari front windows?
So you could more easily see the Lions and the Water Buffaloes
The Buzz front end styling leaves me flat. Those slanty headlights and that cheese grater grill just don't belong.

It'll sell as fast as they can make them anyway
At the moment there are still 9 months delivery time. I think the delivery time will be longer.
And the chief designer that made the EV bus is fired. What a load of bs.
If it doesn’t blow into th to the next lane in gusty winds, then it’s not a Bus 🤣🤣🤣
Please stop calling a bus “Samba” it’s call a bus, a type 2 but not a Samba. When the front windows open they are called safari windows.
Yes, that's right, it's not Samba, it's Safarie, so you can get confused
