Now this law has been changed. It would be considered as a runout if the non-striker tries to take undue advantage and the bowler has issued a warning earlier and does it again.

"The Classic Paradox of Spirit and Ethics"
Whole international Cricket fraternity was actively discussing an event of Saturday 24.09.2022, in which Indian Women Cricket team player Deepti Sharma, having noticed that England Women Cricket team player Charlie Dean was out of her crease as she was about to complete a delivery, ran her out at the non-striker's end while in her delivery stride, during the 3rd and final ODI match that helped India complete a 3-0 series win against England in England.
England required 17 runs in 39 balls at that moment with 1 wicket in hand and this sudden and unexpected blow came as the deciding factor of the match, the fate of which could have otherwise gone either ways.
Running a batsman out this way is popularly known and referred to as "Mankading" - a name derived after great Indian Cricketer Vinoo Mankad as he was the first bowler in the history of Test Cricket to run an Australian batsman Bill Brown out twice like this in the year 1947/48 during India tour of Australia.
Till year 2022, this act was listed under Section 41 titled "Unfair Play" at law no. 41.16 as follows :
    -----
Law 41.16 - "Non-striker leaving his/her ground early" :- "If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out. Whether the attempt is successful or not, the ball shall not count as one in the over. If the bowler fails in an attempt to run out the non-striker, the umpire shall call and signal Dead ball as soon as possible."
    -----
It is interesting to note that the language of this sub section's title was also significantly changed in the year 2017 from the earlier “Bowler attempting to run out non-striker before delivery” to “Non-striker leaving their ground early” certainly in order to put the “onus on the non-striker to remain in their ground.”
MCC, in a significant amendment made in this law in the year 2022 that is going to take effect from 1st October 2022, moved this act from section 41 i.e. "Unfair Play" to Section 38 that is titled "Run Out" as follows :
    -----
Law 38.3 : Non-striker leaving his / her ground early.
Sub Law 38.3.1 - "If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out. In these circumstances, the non- striker will be out Run out if he/she is out of his/her ground when his/her wicket is broken by the bowler throwing the ball at the wicket or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered."
    -----
The above quoted law no. 41.16 that had earlier dealt with it was now reworded in the 2022 amendment to check and penalise the batsman for trying to steal a run illegally as follows :
    -----
    Law no. 41.16 : "Batters stealing a run" -
"It is unfair for the batters to attempt to steal a run during the bowler’s run-up. Unless the bowler attempts to run out the non-striker (see Law 38.3 - Non-striker leaving his/her ground early) - the umpire shall :
    - call and signal Dead ball as soon as the batters cross in such an attempt.
    - inform the other umpire of the reason for this action.
The bowler’s end umpire shall then :
    - return the batters to their original ends and disallow the attempted run.
    - award 5 Penalty runs to the fielding side.
    - award any other 5 run Penalty that is applicable.
    - inform the batters, the captain of the fielding side and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side, of the reason for this action.
The umpires together shall report - the occurrence as soon as possible after the match to the Executive of the offending side and to any Governing Body responsible for the match, who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain, any other individuals concerned and, if appropriate, the team.
    -----
    ( Source : THE LAWS OF CRICKET 2017 CODE (3rd Edition - 2022) effective 01.10.2022 )
So it is pretty clear from above that the new Playing Conditions which are going to be effective from 1st October 2022, list the act of a bowler attempting a run out at the non-striker’s end under the ‘Run Out’ section (Section 38) which presently even till date is listed under ‘Unfair Play’ (Section 41).
So let us know and understand that what Indian Cricketer Dipti Sharma has done in the above incident was still listed in 'Unfair Play' section on the day of the incident, for whatever worth the information is and shall be moved to 'Run Out' section in about 4 days from now.
But one thing must be remembered here very clearly. Cricket is a game that comes to life with every ball coming into play and dies everytime a ball is deemed or declared to be a dead ball.
In simple language, the game comes to life from the moment a bowler begins his run-up from the nonstriker end and concludes when the ball becomes motionless in the hands of fielder, keeper or the bowler.
Just because the game has these ball wise episodes and is not a continuous one like other fast paced field games - great importance is attached to 'taking a start' (Taking a few steps forward) wherever you are positioned to gain momentum for two reasons. One to be able to carry out the task swiftly as expected and two, not to strain or pull any of the body muscles by coming into action through a sudden jerking movement.
All those who have played Cricket sometime in their life know that all fielders take a start to field properly and same is also applicable for the batsman standing still at the nonstriker end though he or she takes a start for a different reason i.e. to take a run.
As the coaches advise and an age old practice goes, the batsman at the nonstriker end keeps an eye on the bowlers action and is legitimately allowed to take a start and step out of the crease, moment the ball is delivered i. e. leaves the hands of bowler.
The choice of following any example ultimately lies with the individual sportsperson and accordingly though what was done by Indian Cricketer was technically right and she can not possibly be in any way legally held responsible or prosecuted for indulging in an act as provided for in MCC law book, which has legitimately earned her team the last wicket of a batter who, by the proceedings of the game at that moment, could have been a certain hurdle between India and victory in that game, to my mind no Cricket player playing by the spirit of the game would like to or prefer getting into this type of unethical act to win a game.
Many senior players have suggested that such batters be warned by the bowler a few times before he or she can be run out for leaving the crease early because for all you know, it could possibly just be an involuntary act of 'taking a start' taken to an unrealistic unrealised extent owing to the match excitement. Yes - if the batter doesn't improve, the bowler should teach him a lesson by running him or her out.
Now the situation is totally changed effective 1st October 2022 wherein the batter has not only been made fully accountable for such an irresponsible act of leaving the crease early to gain an unfair advantage, even the umpires have been given the powers of awarding 5 penalty runs to the fielding side in proven cases.
Things are going to be difficult for batters standing at the nonstriker end and they will have to be alert not to indulge in any such act.
But I feel if we appreciate what has been done by this Indian women cricketer, chances are that more and more players will look for an opportunity to Eran a wicket in this manner and the real contest of Cricket that happens only on the striker end may somewhere be left behind.

    • @authorsauditions
      @authorsauditions 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

It will become like baseball where stealing bases is part of the game and these kind of run outs are normal. What is not clear to me about the new rule is whether the umpire can grunt runs to the fielding team for every instance of a runner leaving the crease early.
