    I think if you can master this technique it's just much better accurate than the Vertigo mode. Then it's a good tutorial to master that. Also this handling technique looks appropriate for this shot.

    I'm curious if it would be hard to implement a ghost image when you hit record that way you can see the original size throughout the duration of the shot.

    I'm not even trying to do the vertigo effect, I'm simply trying to zoom in on something and keep it in focus. For example, a tree, and then zooming in on a bird on a branch. When I zoom in, the bird is not in focus. Any way to focus while you zoom in? I've searched the internet and haven't found the answer. Thanks!

    • @ScottDumas

      It might depend on the particular phone and how it handles autofocus. I’ve never really thought about it much with an iPhone although I believe that you can tap to focus

    The problem is you can't film it at 24fps (cinematic), you need an ND filter and maybe a lens, e.g. Moondog Anamorphic. I'd like to see that on Smooth 4. Otherwise it's a great movie.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah ND filters would really really help out, I'm going to try and test out some different accessories for the iPhone and see how they work out in combination with the Smooth 3/4 :)

    Hi, I hope you are still reading comments. I have a problem when trying to do this move because the zoom is way to jittery, it goes in somewhat small increments but is nowhere near smooth.
    When I do it semi automatically it looks good but I am really trying to learn it manually.
    It is almost like the sensitivity of the focus/zoom wheel is too large or something, do you have any idea how to fix it?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thanks for commenting. Unfortunately I suspect that's a limitation of the phone camera and/or how it is technically able to interact with the gimbal. Which phone are you using? I've only tested it with an iPhone so it might be a different experience with different models. I know that Androids can often have problems in particular

    I have a question but not related to smooth 4. Just wondering what is lav mic you using in this video? The audio is very good no noise or another sound around you?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was the Rodelink Filmmaker Kit lav mic... it worked alright but I think this particular unit had some problems (it didn't reach anywhere near the full distance that it should)... at this distance though having a wireless lav mic is really great. I hope to look at some from Sennheiser soon as well, they're a little more expensive but have a good reputation (Rode typically does as well).

    Hello, nice explanation you have made. Have you tried tracking an object, such as a person or a car in motion, and let Gimbal follow the object by panning and tilt? Can it really be true that it loses tracking points after 5-10 seconds?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I have tried it a bit, and in my experience it definitely can lose the subject fairly easily. It depends on a lot of factors like how clearly defined the subject is, but it's not the best tracking I've tried.

    Hi, could U make video with Zhiyun and phone lenses? Which one is best to buy ( expectations ). And how much weight gimble could manage with it. I actually lack of detailed information about phone lenses thease days.
    Also I thinking about Rode VideoMicro to improve the sound. So it will be good starter for amateur like me.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will definitely try! I don't have any lenses at the moment actually but I will be trying to see if I can get my hands on some for review. As for weight, it will definitely depend how it's balanced (most weight to one side or evenly spread) but it seems to work with my iPhone X no problem so far even with a medium thickness case, so I would be curious myself as well to see how it handles different size/weight lenses. The Rode smartphone mic could work too, although annoying with the iPhone X because of the headphone jack issue. :( Bummer for me haha

    Can you please tell me what functions can the Smooth 4 do without the use of the Zhiyun Play app?
    I'm considering researching and purchasing the DJI Osmo 2 but still not sure. I prefer a Gimbal with less functions but have the ability to use all of.
    Thanks so much and hope to hear back from you.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks so much for watching! I only had very little time with with the app on an android phone so it's hard to say if my experience was what others will have. But, in any case, without the app I think you'd basically be stuck with the gimbal itself and no extra functions (of course it would stabilize your phone and you can use pan follow/lock/full follow and phonego modes) but won't be able to start/stop recording or use the zoom feature. I do agree that sometimes a more simple gimbal can be nice, but it can also be nice to have the extra features in case you decide to use them in the future. It's definitely a hard choice with so many on the market.

      You can use it with the native camera of course but the extra features like the focus wheel and all the buttons won't really have any meaning, in that case I'd say it would be more worth it to get something older and simpler or just a different brand that works better with the app, like the freevision vilta m (might not be perfect on android but I've heard it's much better- iphone has no issues with their app)

    Why its shaking too much when I zoom in and out ?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically with more magnification/a longer lens vibrations will be more and more noticeable so when you zoom in and out the small movements of your hand are more visible and it definitely needs practice/care to get smoother movements. I've found these vertigo clips respond really well to stabilization afterwards though if you put them in some software like final cut that has that ability. I believe that TH-cam itself also has the ability to add stabilization to videos, and that could help.

    Hi, thanks for the video!
    One question... Does the zhiyun camera app allow fixed focus?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks for watching! In theory it seems that you should be able to lock your focus, but I've had issues with the app kind of jumping back into auto mode (both for focus and exposure) by itself. I'm going to be experimenting with it a lot more in the coming week or so, and I'll be sure to include that point in my overall review.

    • @iballiano

      Ok! Thank you so much, its soo important... I've seen some other vídeos and yes, I saw that It allows you yo select focus, but is nice yo know that there's issues. Waiting for your news... Seems to be a good product anyways.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey I messed around with it a bit more today and there does indeed seem to be a button on screen to lock focus... I'm still curious if playing around with other settings will cancel it out and make you re-select it, like it has with some other settings, but to some level the option does seem to be there and be working for the most part :) Again, I'll be sure to have more in my final review :)

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @DimusTech
      @DimusTech 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, sad to hear that, I'm thinking if I want to get this one or maybe the Dji Osmo 2, I don't really need the vertigo and the rest of the features are pretty much the same

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah from gimbal to gimbal the performance will probably be pretty similar, so the features are what make the biggest difference. If you don't need the vertigo, then the Osmo (or some other choice) might be wiser for you. :)

    • @DimusTech
      @DimusTech 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a hard choice, 1 reason I would look at the Osmo is cause it's DJI it's a huge great drone maker, but on the other hand when it comes to gimbals it seems that Zhiyun is doing a great job as well, the price difference is too small to be a decider here in my case so I guess it will end with who has a better app, and even in that area both of the companies seem to be doing pretty good job.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I think most choices around that price point should be fairly similar in performance. If you have an Android though I'd definitely not recommend the Zhiyun because the app seems terrible (for android). I'd hope that will be updated soon but you never know.

    • @ScottDumas

      Hi! Thanks for watching! It will probably come down to the balance of the weight, more than the total weight. The arm doesn't have as much range to adjust as the Smooth 3 for example, so if it's too heavy on one side you might possibly run into some issues. Couldn't be sure without trying though, sorry.

      I haven't been able to try, but generally the app is not good on Android at the moment. The gimbal itself will work fine of course, but the app is the issue.

      With Android systems in general, the App will be your big problem at the moment. I don't have the xz1 to test personally but with the Android I tested that was the only issue I found.
