  • According to the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, the number of people who reported first-time homelessness doubled from 2020 to 2021. Denver7's Rob Harris takes an in-depth look into homelessness, and the different ways advocates are working to help people get off the streets.

Agreed. I don’t know why some people keep thinking that housing alone is a solution to the homeless problem, most of the homeless people out there unfortunately, are mentally unstable, and cannot hold a job or become a productive citizen of society.
Our leaders really need to get to the core of the issue, mandated, or required rehab along with housing is the solution to stability, your comment a spot on.

Seeing what has become of Denver is sad. Growing up there in the 1970's and 1980's was a delight. But an incident that happened to me in 2019 forced me to say goodbye. I was on my way home from work when a homeless person on the 16th St. Mall asked me for some money. I politely told him I didn't have any. He became very angry and slashed my arm with his pocketknife. I moved to Phoenix primarily because it's not that far away (14 hour drive). I drove up to Denver this past August and the homeless problem has gotten worse. Phoenix has a bad homeless problem too but the city will not let the homeless set up tents in front of your house like I saw in many parts of Denver. Homelessness is a complex problem with different causes but the politicians in Denver have added fuel to the fire.

So sorry you had this happen to you. I agree. The politics and the people who vote for such policies have allowed denver to go downhill. We were once touring an apt complex and a homeless man almost assaulted my wife. Idk what would have happened if we didn’t lock the doors and drove away. He had a rock on hand. I truly hate this place now and we plan to move for work elsewhere. It’s gotten expensive as well and it’s constantly dirty and worse by the day. Even brand new areas like Stapleton are trash now. I think you did the right thing. I agree with other states doing a better job. This place will be the new Portland or LA. Very sad to see it happen. And the influx of people coming in are that high quality kinda folk who loves to contribute to society so this place is slipping fast. And the politics and policies of this place don’t help at all. Shame.

I’m from Los Angeles and just went to Denver a couple of days ago to see The Cure show. I went downtown with my buddy and his family to a Brazilian BBQ. We took the train in from Glendale. There were shady people smoking something out of tin foil. The restaurant was near Union Station and there were quite a few homeless people around. It kinda surprised me. It actually reminded me of Downtown L.A., which is next to Skid row. Downtown L.A. is all hipster next to Skid Row and they blend together near the border.

Housing first is essential! Shame on the politicians who should and could be making a difference and get people off the street regardless of their mental state or drug addictions but they do nothing! They need to get homeless people housing first. They should be designated fenced in places with tiny houses for them. To just allow them to live & sleep on the streets is unhealthy, dangerous and will only get worse. There also needs to be much more affordable housing programs nation wide. Not just for immigrants, blacks and Hispanic's but for all Americans especially senior citizens, disabled and people with low income. Rent is way too high, and even if one gets a low cost housing voucher most apt complexes still go by your income and credit score which is ridiculous because those are the main reasons they are applying for low cost housing. So they make it even harder for people who are accepted to get low cost housing to get it! The laws and policy rules are horrible and they need to be changed. If you call they tell you your on your own, we don't find housing for you. So even people who are accepted for low cost housing have to jump through hoops and go through a ton of red tape and are treated unfairly. Not counting the $50 to $100 fees per application for a apt. People are homeless for so many different reasons but, why do many leave piles of trash wherever they go? My family and I were having this discussion and we figure they are probably in such a low spot being in survival mode only so, they’re not thinking about keeping things neat or littering in their location. Years ago I worked with women trying to transition out of halfway houses. They had a history of struggling with poverty and addiction. As I spoke with them about their situations I noticed a pattern of multiple poor choices along their road in life and sometimes a sense of laziness or non-motivation to improve things and to just take the easy route at that moment every time 🤷🏽‍♂️ We probably need to reopen more housing for the mentally unstable as well. If we could keep even a small percentage of people on regular medication it’s more likely they’d could be productive members of society.

Most that are making it, fall under the category of one check away from being homeless! So many put a stigma with being homeless it’s unreal. My degrees are in business management and I was a Senior Representative for the largest bank in the world. Do you know what happened? It damn sure wasn’t crack or mental instability. I was more than one paycheck away from losing everything but guess what, Getting sick is not covered correctly and Short term disability was only 20 consecutive days ( not business days) to be diagnosed with an acceptable sickness. Not even the doctors in New York can diagnose that quick and they are top notch. It was this is a corporate America. Our government was in jeopardy about 20-30 years ago and they were failing. People were realizing this and ready to overturn our government and they screamed for help hence our government sold their souls to the devil aka corporate America. Who is buying up the housing market and raising the rent so high it’s unrealistic? Corporations and the government doesn’t stop them. Pharmaceutical companies provided opioids for many many years knowing what they have done and our government didn’t step in until it started to effect the rich kids. But let’s not talk about the facts of the matter. Do you know what it’s like to get into a shelter? It’s unreal!! There’s literally months and months waiting list and when they call, you have to be ready to jump as high as they tell you to and when they tell you to. People need to get out their own heads and truly open their eyes. Our society is crumbling and everyone is diverting away from the true issues at hand. We could make our government fix all of this if we’d put their precious GDP on a back burner. All it would take is buying second hand items and our government couldn’t move forward, they’d have to face the facts of what we want now but so many are unaware of GDP much less even heard of it or the true power it ( we as consumers hold) has. All these things were done for a purpose as they seen the older generations attest and win and they didn’t want to risk that no more so what did they do? They dumbed down the average Americans. Unless we get smart and unite real quick, our country is done for. May our maker have mercy on our souls!
