    I can see Venice being a "bad" civ for multiplayer. But in single player mode, I think they're pretty strong. With how stupid the combat AI is in the game, an efficient military defending a small empire tends to do quite well, thank you. Plus, your cash flow means you can often buy off other civs to fight for you. Once you get a solid military, specially if city states are regularly gifting you units, the other civs don't mess with you and you can build up a huge trade network with no problem.

    • @JumboPixel
      @JumboPixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      You’re right, the only thing I would add is that it really depends on the victory condition and your starting location. On a high difficulty the AI gets so many units it is possible that you’ll just get steamrolled 😂
      On normal or easier difficulties though I totally agree! It’s also just really fun to be restricted to one super city.

      @@JumboPixelBut don’t you think in higher difficulties it is possible to bribe the Civs to war with each other to buy you enough time to catch up?

    Venice is either horrible or horrifying. There is no middle ground, and if Venice isn't on the path of exponential expansion it is circling the drain. I can see how against exclusively competent opponents, keeping that pace of expansion would be extremely tough. Their ability to pivot so quickly makes them comparable to the zerg in SC2: you can win against them with your deadly Protoss ground army, only to encounter a mass of mutalisks as you scramble to get to their base to inflict economic damage before they kill you. Further, there is an extremely clear line between "Cities That Are Venice and Cities That Are Expendable". You can pillage some of their villages, but if you haven't taken Venice, then you can bet that 'ol Enrico is still cookin' up something good for you.

    Weirdly enough, the first game I won in Multiplayer was as Venice. Everyone counted me out, so it gave me the room to dom the map through trade. I was making an ungodly amount of gold per turn, though as a note I only took over two city states (I was allied with every other city state as well) whose borders where close to my enemies, to distract them and keep them off of my primary doorstep. Admittedly though my victory was a point victory and I only one like 30pts.

  • @mikemoody3651
    @mikemoody3651 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    On the mid difficulties, I find a huge advantage that you don’t need to spend any money on expansion and you can build 80% of the wonders since you have an ever growing city with (hopefully) a powerful economy.

    Venice is a pretty great civ when i play it. It's like a one city challenge Portugal with 20+ people you can meet in civ 6 which is brain dead easy as fuck to play even on Deity.

  • @Jack-kx5rf
    @Jack-kx5rf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    When the game first starts it selects the spots to place the civs with a starting bias and Venice always has the highest priority. Theoretically, it is supposed to place your settler in the single best starting location on the entire map, sadly the game is bad at knowing good city placements. The pure power Venice would have if it actually was given the best spot on the map.

    in my 3rd run i played venice in prince diff,took over half city states as puppets and rest as allies,reached 550-600 gold per turn,won easily the world leader round and stayed for 30 rounds just to nuke every dumb civ until they started to give up ciites :D really fun and annoying in low difficulties

  • @julesgro8526
    @julesgro8526 ปีที่แล้ว

    I´d say for Venice, apart from the need for a really solid starting position,
    food is the most important thing.
    Having a 30+ pop capital is soooo useful for specialists.
    So hanging gardens is my first wonder if possible, great library is very helpful as well.
    I consider a mountain as mandatory to be able to compete in science at all long term.
    Religion can work, i had good runs, but often its opportunity cost is too high.
    I´m going for diplomatic or cultural victory.
    You can drive both at the same time easily.
    I tend to save my merchants for city states that are either at a strategic location such as a strait, or offer strategic resources i lack, esp ofc uranium or aluminum.
    I enjoy playing Venice more than any other faction in any other 4x game. (Nr.2 being Vodyani in ES2)
    Good guide :)

    Respectfully I disagree. AI massive warmongers are easy to pay off and distract. Venice policy trees….honor, patronage, exploration, and autocracy…..if you manage your navy properly you should have the best in the world. Having the best navy and winning diplomatic victory is my favorite and I can do it on Diety no problem.

    Jumbo I got reckt back to back in my first two diety civ 5 matches. Both times the AI just swarmed my forward city with swordsmen and composite bows while I had only warriors (though could build spears and archers, not that it would have made a difference) ! I won easily on King and Emperor, so skipped Immortal to go to Diety and it wasn't even close!

      @@JumboPixel Poland; I was copying some of your Poland stuff, i just lost my 3rd diety game, got to 4 cities and had four composite bows, two spears, two archers, all cities on defendable terrain, and got killed by the Huns. I settled towards the huns as they were 'friendly'. But again i wasnt even able to put up a meaningful defense. It seems very hard to get your cities up without getting attacked by vastly superior forces. Im about to try China or Arabia. 8 player standard map on pangia.

    • @JumboPixel
      @JumboPixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm interesting. I definitely wouldn’t trust the Hunns, even if diplomatic status is friendly. They’re a warmongering Civ regardless 🤬
      Yeah the unit bonuses make it really difficult. The AI spawns with A LOT of units! You do need some good, defensive units (but it sounds like you’ve already got a reasonable amount - perhaps too much of you haven’t built walls as well)

    • @dbuckleton
      @dbuckleton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @sabotage7773
      @sabotage7773 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dbuckleton all you need to do is pay off the AI to fight their other neighbours, that way you can skip building an army at all at the beginning of the game and focus on buildings/wonders
      also sometime sending a trade route to the neighbouring civ as opposed to feeding your own cities (which should in general be prioritized) can make them like you and you wont get attacked
      bribing them to war someone else, however, is the safest bet and can guarantee you easy deity wins

    Hey Jumbo. To get Venice to level 48 you got to rely on food for all the game i guess??? I just played it on production mode and went to level 28 to lose in 2050 because Caesar was always ahead of me on the industrial era.Tough to play this Dandolo.....

  • @Lightbulb909

    I disagree. Time spent not building settlers is time spent preparing for MoVs. I first focus on building-up my capital, revealing horses and iron for production (the latter tech will open up colossus). I’ll go pottery first if and only if I can secure good faith or have two or more granary-increasing resources. Eventually I have to research pottery for the tech after sailing. By the time I puppet a city-state, I’ll make sure I enough gold to buy a granary if not built in the city-state, and two cargo ships for domestic food routes between both. Also, usually city-states by then have built their own workers. Then I’ll rush colossus, and while building it go for markets, and then national guilds in order to ramp-up merchant points for perhaps two more MoVs. I get that makes getting scientists harder, but the extra cities should make up for that. I always make sure domestic routes are built before puppeting.

  • @wolfpax22
    @wolfpax22 ปีที่แล้ว

    Venice really isn't all that bad if you get a really good city state or two with your merchants or capture another enemy capital like you said. And if they're positioned good for trade routes. You end up bringing in so much gold you can buy almost anything while you use your capital's production to spam wonders (including all of the national wonders). Buy an alliance with any city state you can to get all the rewards and you just start to steamroll. Warmongering in late game is even a good option with strategically placed bases, because you can buy and afford a huge amount of units with all that money. And any captured city just becomes another base. Works great with the commerce tree discount, and landsknechts. Can work well with any ideology: order for purchasing buildings, autocracy for purchasing units, and freedom for all of those specialists you're going to have in Venice. Add in Big Ben for the ultimate purchase discount and you can just spam whatever you want with all that gold.
