  • This is the second half of a two-part mini-series that will hopefully help viewers new to fencing understand enough to benefit from my upcoming bout commentaries. This part focuses on the technical side of fencing, including basic footwork and bladework, and how fencers use both to gain an advantage and score touches. The first part, which I uploaded yesterday, covers the absolute basics.
    This series is not meant to teach how to fence, but how to watch and analyze fencing. If you want to learn how to fence, join your local fencing club, and have fun!
    Here's a link to Part 1: • The Basics of Foil Fen...

    You know, at first I thought that foil was the least interesting fencing style and really liked epee, but after learning how it is done, it really is the best discipline. The right of way rules really make me like it more than epee. Kill without being killed is what foil is all about.

      I'll do you one better: I'm going to commentate every single men's individual foil bout, including the finals. I probably won't get to the finals for a while, but it will happen eventually. Stay tuned! :)

      Not necessarily for fitness, but in my opinion just practicing footwork as much as you possibly can works wonders. Footwork is something that every single fencer can improve, and all you need to practice it is a bit of space.
      Just warm up and stretch beforehand, and focus on having perfect technique with every step. Film yourself or watch yourself in a mirror to make sure you're doing everything right, or have a friend or coach watch you. Be hard on yourself. Keep going until you can't stand hold an en garde position. Repeat as often as you can, preferably at least once per day. Switch to non-dominant occasionally so you don't get too lopsided. As you get better, increase the tempo while still focusing on being technically correct.

    Hey! Just started foiling .
    Im better in footworking than bladeworking.. Will you give me a little advice?

    • @TheFoilist
      @TheFoilist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're just starting out, prioritize just having fun over all else. Your technique will improve quickly if you're enjoying the sport and motivated to keep practicing. Your coach will teach you all the specific things you need.

    You can't get away with the best footwork only nor the bladework? So which is more important than?? Both??

    • @TheFoilist
      @TheFoilist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Different people will tell you that different aspects are more important. To be a great fencer, though, you absolutely must have both.

      You need footwork more because without footwork you cannot get to the target or get away from it. Bladework then comes next. That why in the beginning of fencing you learn form and footwork.
