The B580 Overclocked is Wild - Intel Arc Battlemage Review
Okay, so in my hands right now, I have the brand new Intel Arc B580 BattleMage GPU. This thing is definitely very, very impressive, and we'll be taking a look at some of the performance numbers in just a second, but if you've been interested in BattleMage, well, not only have you probably seen me covering this GPU, but you've also probably seen some reviews as well. So instead of just reviewing the Intel Arc B580 today, well, I'm not only gonna be comparing it to some cards such as the A770, the RTX 4060, 3060, and 2060 Super, but we're also gonna be taking a look at the overclocking potential of this B580 because, well, actually it might be pretty good. But before we go ahead and jump into the benchmarks, I real quickly wanna set a baseline of, you know, just how good is the Intel Arc B580? How much have they improved since the A770 in terms of the architecture? Well, when we compare the two, we can see here in 3D Mark Times by Extreme in terms of the overall score, well, the B580 is actually scoring around 14% higher, and the funny thing is, this is despite the fact that the A770 has 60% more cores versus the B580. Now, to be fair, the B580 does clock around 11% higher, so that is a bit of an unfair advantage, but if we were to say clock them at the same speeds, well, in theory, the B580 should be a little bit faster, but even if we were to assume that the B580 gave you the same scores as the A770 when run at the same clock speeds, well, then that would actually indicate that we could be looking at at least a 60% increase in the IPC if you're to look at it that way, and that's absolutely insane. For Intel to have achieved anywhere near 60% improvements in terms of the per core performance on a GPU generation is something that we haven't seen in a very, very long time. Now, they were pretty far behind on the Intel Arc Alchemist GPUs, so yeah, that definitely does bring them a bit more in line, but if they can do this multiple times in a row, not only will they actually catch up to Nvidia and AMD, but they might actually start to surpass them in terms of the per core performance or maybe performance per die area.

If the B580 performance is any indication. The B770-B780 stands a solid chance of actually matching a 4070 super.
Fingers crossed for a $350 4070 Super competitor 🤞
imagine a Arc B990
@carlosrieum1526 I'd buy that. Just saying.
I'd say more than that maybe 4070ti super if the do it right sense b580 has 12 gb vram I'd say next one will have 16.
hello team blue
you're still fine team red
team green are scammers and much worse
A $300 B770 with 16GB of VRAM the speed of an RTX 4070 would be peak
I'm buying several of those for my family if it comes out 🙏 please intel!
Actually would also undercut AMD for the 7700xt at $330 rn.
Realistically, I think the ARC B770 would be priced at $350. Still, if it could match the 4070's performance while being under $400, it would be a game changer.
Not a chance it will be that price, will be $350 retail if it's even released
@@timg2655 haha seriously I'd jump on that quick
Intel needs to flood the market with there GPU’s cause scalpers is a serious problem
Scalping makes no sense. The only appeal of the card is the $249 price. Any higher and it loses its appeal.
bro come on primary school level its. their not there
Knowing how big is the silicon of the B580 and its MSRP below the 4060's, i really doubt intel is doing *any* money with these GPUs. Who knows if they are actually losing money with every GPU made.
That said, let's see what is intel really going to do, agressively trying to build market share or just selling silicon they already bought years ago from TSMC at a price thet really make them leave shelves and concentrate in iGPU solutions like Lunar Lake.
@@Just_An_Ignacio are these built at a tsmc fab?
@@harveybirdmannequin well it hasn't for all the people that are buying them for well over MSRP. There is a reason it's sold out and its not because everyone that wants to actually use it bought them.
You were never going to get 20% from the overclock since performance doesn't scale linearly with clockspeed, but 10% performance gains from a 20% overclock is still insane. Nowadays when you overclock an Nvidia card, you get 2, 3, maybe 5% if you have a golden sample, but never 10%. Nowadays a 10% improvement is like going up a performance tier or generation at the low to mid range, and just from moving a few sliders.
well, nvidia had a lot of time to really squeeze every bit of performance they could from the card without needing OC, so i would venture a guess that its not ideal that 10% is on the table for intel, hopefully they will shrink it down further as they progress.
7900 gre core and memory overclock manages to match a 7900 xt on some games
that's probably been the best overclockable card in "modern" times
Most cards boost to the point that overclocking is just a waste of time. Now if you are using a Vega 64 or 1080 TI by all means. But newer GPU's will boost based on temp and power limits.
It seems my card was still power limited and dropping closer to 3.1GHz or even lower at times. With an AIB card the scaling should hopefully be better.
@@EtaCarinaeSC Nvidia has locked down their cards to stop anything over a small voltage/current bump, and they stopped allowing BIOS flashing. That's why people started shunt modding to physically get around their limits.

I purchased mine Friday at microcenter got ASRock steel legend
@@xtaci32 how is it?
I wonder how far you could push the ASRock Steel Legend? Better cooling and more power. Intel has a real winner here. Gamers needed this.
You should try this again with the steel legend version with the better cooling and the 2 power connectors I'd say it would do a lot better.
Since the card's power limit is much power (200 W), there's only minimal benefit from a dual connector design.
Do you think 750w PSU would be fine for OC and this card?
recommended is 650w for that GPU w no OC
@@Kevin-vh6nn of course, I’m running a 3080 (300w)on a 600w psu no issues
Can offer stability and and load an individual connector less, I think it's surprising on occasion how much of a difference it makes.
@@robert7984 Why wouldn't the Steel Legend version have a higher power limit? It's common for OC graphics cards to support a higher maximum power limit than reference models.
Sold out everywhere as of the time of this post. That should say something! I absolutely love my A750 and can't wait to get my hands on the B series for my 12900KS
Yes, it says there is a scalper epidemic in the market.
@@AllenJohn Not really scalpers , it is very limited stock , like very limited in EU biggest retailers received like 20 gpus each
i'm not sure if i should be regretting not buying the b580 when i could
on launch day there was one available for 330 (about as low as it realistically might ever be for my region), by now the prices are up to 400 and all sold out anyways.
@@Verchiel_ i decided to buy the Steel Legend for €330 at launch, 1 day later it was sold out everywhere. I'm so so so happy with this card. It is so incredibly good, even with my i7-8700 which bottlenecks the card so hard (max gpu usage was 70%). New AM5 system (cpu, mobo, ram) will arrive wednesday and the performance will be even more incredible, it really is that good. Also, if you convert the US price of the Steel Legend to EU price (taxes and conversion) it has a minimum price of €310 so the Steel Legend will probably not drop below that price point for a while. The calculation is $270 x 0,95 x 1,21 = €310
Guys, i personnaly am waiting for intel to launch the high-end gpus of Battlemage, if something like the the B780 comes and has the same perf/dollar as the B580 it should cost around 300/400$ for the performance of the 4070/4070ti knowing that their software is still going to improve like it did with Alchemist as we sometime saw huge performance uplift wit driver updates almost monthly. If you have a bit more money to spare on 400$ and were considering the B580, you know what to do. Unless maybe there's no B700 then just go ahead and buy the b580 surely intel would have already rolled out a driver update by then
@@machinchouette5233 all primary Intel arc b580 GPUs are completely sold out and there won’t be a restock until Jan 3rd. Gonna wait until then to buy one as an upgrade to my arc a750.
@ but did you consider waiting for a more medium to high-end battlemage gpu from intel?
@ considering how long that could take Intel to developed and release, I would take the risk of saving money for a decent low end card instead of buying something high end in the next 6-12 months. I think it is a good idea to wait but due to my PC needing new parts (GPU, CPU, Storage, etc) I think it’s a good idea to also buy everything within a small two month time span
I will just buy both for supporting Intel GPU's. Have had my B580 LE since Saturday :D B580 it's doing well for my 4k gaming, but hope B7XX will make it even better.
Buy this GPU? HOW?????
The scalpers bought them all. Again.
wait for new stock, let the scalpers sit on their stock
I've got one, bought it yesterday
Sold out today tho, so.... It's a low volume paper launch, so it's probably just that there's no supply
Scalping this card is beyond idiotic, and the morons that did buy them to resell will find out why.
Most of them went to legitimate buyers, it's just that this is a fairly limited initial offerings for the very high (and somewhat unexpected) demand. Give it a few weeks and let's see how the stock does.
@@roqeyt3566 this right here
Not in China, here we are getting a lot of stock. Priced around 280 to 300usd, about the same as RTX4060.
Perhaps one of the arc B50 gpus with two 8 pin connectors would be even better
Quick reminder that going from 2850 MHz (the *actual* stock clock of the card under most gaming loads, not the boost clock on the spec sheet, which is low for every modern GPU) to ~3150 MHz is about a 10% increase in clock speed.
Looking forward to the competition. Great review, thanks for checking out overclocking as well!

I've never been happier to hear a good review for a GPU.
Picked up the b580 from Scorptec in Sydney this morning. Great for my HTPC as narrow form factor and is running quieter and cooler than my a750 with noticeable performance increase.
A 10% overlock isnt bad at all. But the overclocking according to one review is finicky. The Asrock challenger version may overclock better. But I wouldn't hold out for much.
Loving my b580. Was able to get a solid complete new build with plenty of upgrade potential for $1000
Nvidia 40 series overlock is extremely small improvements on all cards unless you shunt mod. This is actually a throw back to older video cards where overlocking actually does something which is what enthusiasts love. Like myself.
It would be nice if the B780 does in fact come out. Some rumors suggest it may be canceled, but if it’s performance is competitive and reviews positive enough that Intel can afford to (sorry, but…) raise prices into the realm of profitability, then it becomes worth their time to manufacture more.
And the thing is AMD may actually be forced to price RDNA4 up to help make sure they sell through leftover RDNA3 inventory. This is the sort of thing that could give Intel sufficient incentive to start manufacturing more Battlemage GPUs and make this generation interesting.
finally someone who willing to overclock this thing, I waited so long for this
I'll be picking up the ASRock b580 steel legend today. I'll immediately try to overclock it. I will let you know the results.
@@DaveTheeMan-wj2nk sooo?
@@ChromeDomeTurtle It's incredible.
I play world of warcraft, I was amazed. This card scales with this game oddly well.
4k playing at 140fps+
Overclocked the card 3200mhz voltage +85, power limit 108.
The 1% lows sky rocket for some reason, which is amazing!!
And I get around 4-10 more fps depending on the game which is one hell of a boost.
And even with the overclock and voltage it's still sipping power lol. most games still playing at 100-140watts.
however, I run it at 3100 because the difference isn't great. however power draw is vastly superior.
This card has exceeded my expectations. And I can use AI generation AI play from Intel and generating AI on my own system is so bad ass. I'm having a blast!!!
Oh, and this steel legend is ice cold. Can't hear it at all. max load with oc like 62-64c.
that's with slow fan speeds.
You can increase Memory speeds up to 22Gbps, set Frequency Offset, increase Power Limit percentage and in the Advanced OC Tab you can set an offset curve.
This card will become the best gpu to OC, along with other Battlemage cards that release.
1% lows are effected by the bus speeds
I can't wait to get a hold of a B580.. I'm pretty excited about INTEL futures in the GPU market.
I bought an RX6600 as a gift a month ago - I wish I'd waited. But that's the way it goes.
The person you got it for is not going to care or even know, plus if they are not a super advanced PC user, I would say you made the right move regardless.
why...the B580 ain't selling under $370 anywhere..what a shame. They marked up the price everywhere, it ain't worth it no more
sell it when b580 comes back in stock
list it for 160 and it will sell that day
use that 160 to upgrade to b580
I just paid $155 for a barely used 6650XT (I’m surprising a friend with their first gaming PC for Xmas). I love the idea of the B580 but there’s so many good used deals out there.
@@Semnoss blame scalpers. MSRP is 250 before tax.
The same power of the old gen at the same price of the old gen 😍
as much as im not a fan of their modern cpus, ive really been hoping intel could make a good gpu. i cant wait to see what the rest of the lineup holds, off to a good start for once
Great seeing another manufacturer do well, i hope they enter the high end segment as well at some point so nvidia stops being complacent
My thoughts exactly, Steel legend B580 with the 2 connectors will be far better ForeSure than cards with the single 8 pin which supplies 150 watts than plus 75 watts from motherboard slot totaling 225 watts. With two 8-pin plugs we raise the limits to 375 watts if the card can draw it. If we try overclocking with extra lofty goals of more than this already 10% increase, the silicon must be very good to be stable in the first place. Plus, as silicon gets hotter it in turn it creates more resistance due to electron transmigration which in turn takes more power which than in turn creates more heat which again takes more power and every time you add more power it's becomes a feedback loop. With just the (OC)10% speed boost already shown here I would expect something like this actually required at least 15% power increase, that's already 30 watts, right? So, to OC this B580 to 15% faster in speed expect it to consume 20-30% more power to be stable which is 40-60 watts higher than stock settings and only can happen if you can keep both the GPU processor and its Memory cool enough while winning the silicon lottery. I'm betting you come close to the 225-watt limitation of the combined wattage from single 150-watt 8 pin connector and 75 watts from slot just doing the 10% OC so you can see how going higher to a 15% OC exceeds this 225-watt limitation of the card with single 8-pin plug version. To even stand a chance at 15% OC that B580 card must have the ability to safely draw the power with decent & efficient power distribution & regulation which must be part of that vender's card specific design. Without the dual 8 pin power plugs one could derive we would never reach the required power level of what's probably at minimal 240 watts and to be sure of we have enough 260 watts! So, it's pretty much the same with all Gpu's and Cpu's we must ask ourselves why we would go so far as to cause long term heat damage by extreme OC's to our Gpu or Cpu? Maybe the reason the 10% OC worked is because Intel baked in extra headroom to ensure all variations & Bins of B580 GPUs run cool & stable to work reliably even past the warrantee. Even small amounts of OC over short times can degrade the silicon so I would be interested in finding out how stable those same overclocks were just a few months from now and then how stable they are a year from now after being used daily while gaming. The B580 is a $250 to $300 card and we buy it for just that reason being we either can't afford or don't want to spend more than $300 so why would we want to burn it out just to have to pay for a second replacement at the cost of another $300? wouldn't that defeat the reason for buying a budget Gpu card in the 1st place? because if we burn out the card and have to buy another than we are $600 deep and may as well just bought a far better card. I get the OC thing and have done it on rare occasions but only when I can't play a game title smoothly with what I already have. It is better to tweak the game settings a little to achieve that same outcome!
I just got one of these, the reference intel design. Great card! I love it. Better than my 4060. Easily
If intel could figure some way to bring a sort of SLI-like feature for their cards, that and being so budget friendly would make them significantly more popular.
Impressive I might switch next year, currently still using RTX 3070. But I guess I target their higher end card this time arround. The RTX 3080 and higher were simply to expansive to me
The B580 has got me really excited for the B7xx cards.
A 4070s competitor for like $200 less would be insane.
I’ve ordered myself a B580 LE from Intel and should arrive in the next few days and I’m looking forward to trying it out on my spare pc (AMD 5800X3D build) ……. And with at least a 10% overclock in performance is something we don’t see from Nvidia or AMD and they haven’t done in a loooooong time!🥰💪👍🥳
Intel is in Intel arc
A770 LE I have overclocked to 2786MHz at 1.16V at 271W. Base is 2100MHz (2400MHz) 225W. For gaming performance it is about 10%. It is just what you need in few games on 4k to get them from playable to enjoyable.
You can't match clock speed for performance increase. It is about 1/3rd maybe just little more but from 20% more clock speed 7-10% is about right.
Man these things are sold out everywhere i look.
you can buy 1 of these and 9 others to give as christmas gifts for the price of one 4090

Attempting an undervolt in conjunction with overclocking may achieve a higher boost clock.
This card is a beast for oc’ing cause it only using 140 watts max out of its 190watt power limit. Honestly i believe intel will do an update to increase its performance. Seems like they underclocked it but thermals are very good too.
If intel released a card to rival rtx 4080 with a sane price tag, I'd be sold.
Can someone show how this card runs old games like Gta, gears, halo mcc etc. im only seeing how it runs new games. Im interested because their last cards ran alot of older games pretty bad, especially when comparing to AMD and Nvidia.

Intel just needs some driver fixes for the 1% Low FPS. Its clear from Nvidia 4060 and AMD 7600 that the 1% lows can be improved on Intel's B580, and is most likely on the Software side, since the Average FPS Rasterization is higher across the board for Intel B580.

Yes I'm kinda worried about that as well however with the 3 companies competing in similar performance tiers prices should fall a lot faster than previous cards have .. or at least we can hope & dream.

The way things are at the moment Intel's graphics division could be the company's future. It's yet to be seen how profitable Battlemage will be. But, any talk of shutting the graphics division
down need to be silenced immediately. I can also see a lot more AIB partners coming on board for Celestial too. I know EVGA dropped out of the graphics game after Nvidia's shenanigans.
But, how crazy and amazing would it be to see them come back and become board partners with Intel? EVGA build quality, customer service, and reasonably priced cards?
That may be pie in the sky dreaming right now. However, it would be a gargantuan statement in the industry as a whole.
I have no idea why but I cant find or open the Intel Graphics Software. cant find a separate download for it either!!
I've heard that overclocking this card can cause a boot loop, is this true?
It seems that the GPU scalpers are back in full force. I can't find a single sub $390 B580 anywhere. And I see like 10 different ads on eBay for the $249 model for almost 100 more than it was sold for. Yeah let them buy them all up just to sell them for what they paid in a few weeks when they ship more out.
I can't shake off the B780 that one of your thumbnails planted in my mind. GTX 780 Ti has been my "GPU crush" back in high school, so I'm a bit biased towards the number itself. Anyway, based on the charts you've showed, Intel B580 falls within the range of generational improvement of the RTX xx60 class. That means it could in theory stand toe-to-toe with the RTX 5060, or be one step behind for let's say $100 less. That could shake things up a bit.
When i was 18 the 3060 was the flagship, im 27 and the 3060 was litterally still the standard until yesterday.
Technology isnt advancing dude, the CPU's are the issue.
Correct me if im wrong but the 3060 was released in feb 25 of 2021, the math isnt mathing here
What about watt per frames , especially OC'd ?! Energy bill stack up quickly in Europe
1% lows are important but I don't think it should be replacing the average fps data set as most important. It's 1% for a reason. As long as it doesn't dip significantly more than any other card, it isn't as relevant. Major 1% low gains can be important though. The 4060 was a horrible GPU at launch and even go beat by the 3060 in some games at higher resolution. The B580 is absolutely a better option. As long as their is driver support, there isn't any reason really to go for the 4060. The B580 has more VRAM, better RT, high rasterization, better overclocking, and all the nice features like AV1, AI upscaling, and even their own version of Nvidia Reflex now for FPS gamers and upscaler users. It also happens to be cheaper.
I am not gonna belief these gpu until i saw from my eyes in games
we need a 40 class gpu at 400 bucks
I don't understand how so many people can be so naive to the fact that every single generation that comes out is not going to be miles ahead of the previous. Our computer technology and power has made exponential gains yes... But we are reaching a limit. Every single generation is not and will never be what it used to me without a major breakthrough in technology.....
I think what we need to consider here more is that prices are not reflecting what the technology we gain each year represents. Rather than blaming the researchers and engineers responsible for the card, it's always the person selling it for that price.
Was this only a core clock or did you change the memory clock too? I know the mem is already clocked pretty fast for gddr6
Why would I buy this when in a month the 8600XT releases?
Vram
GO INTEL! We need you!
Why only one person who made review with games testing this card? (and this is not him)
4060 also gets over 10% boost with OC.
here in denmark they go for minimum 351 dollars!on sale
Is it still impressive when tested on older platforms that only support PCIe 3.0?
The B580 is retailing around $380 (USD), not the $250 price point everyone keeps talking about.
Scalpers bought them all hahah
