Unsurprisingly, MvC 2 was my first time encountering Marrow, but I couldn't help but be enthralled by her animation work in the game! Considering how well Venom was done in MvCI, I would love to see Marrow in a 3D game. Also, now that you mention it, it is insane that Nightcrawler and Jubilee STILL haven't been playable in a Vs series game to this day
Marrow is more obscure now, but back in 2000 when Marvel vs Capcom 2 came out she would’ve been one of the more well know Marvel Comics characters. The thing to remember about that time of ‘90s X-Men is Joe Madureira‘s Uncanny X-Men was basically the biggest comic book there was, (it and Wolverine [and sometimes Spawn] were always trading places in the number one slot of the month) and unlike now, being a best selling comic actually meant something, it actually meant a lot of people saw the thing. Marrow was the main villain during their Gene Nation story, that Storm fight took place during the big Uncanny X-Men Special Anniversary Issue...and then during Operation: Zero Tolerance she get brought back to X-Men with the new hero redesign you see in MVC2. I think she kind of disappeared from the comics because she seemed to mostly be a Joe Mad character. Not that they just go away when he left to do Battle Chasers, but after a while the lineup changed to the more classic characters. Now Marrow is in the kind of place where you probably need a writer or artist that’s somewhere between 34 and 45 to bring her back, some that was reading X-Men comics as a kid or teenager in the mid and late ‘90s...or someone that played Marvel vs Capcom 2. Not that there weren’t more popular characters they could’ve added, (there’s a number of characters that showed up in ‘90s the X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons that never made it, and Ghost Rider was huge in the ‘90s) but I remember Marrow being pretty popular when she’d show up in a Joe Mad comic.
I find it interesting that Sarah’s last name is “Knuckey” which sounds like knuckles because her bones do come out of her body too. That’s a great word play of her name Marrow. She’s always been my favorite Morlock in the Marvel lore. I remember seeing her in X-Men 97’s episode 5 Remember It when Banshee carried her out before the Tri-Sentinel destroyed Genosha😔💔
Shame she doesn’t have much more of a presence, since I actually really like her powers. They’re simple, yet creative. Also I always heard it as Boner-rang, lol.
Marrow’s inclusion in MvC2 made perfect sense. She was actually popular when she first joined the X-Men in the comics. She was viewed as a female Wolverine and as we all know X-23 was included in MvC3 so Marrow is somewhat of an inspiration for both Spike and X-23.
Something to consider: the reason why Marrow was chosen for MvC2's roster is because Capcom rejected more popular characters. According to Katsuya Akitomo (a translator who worked for Capcom during the 90s), the team ended up shooting down Scarlet Witch ("too powerful"), Mr. Fantastic ("too hard to draw"), Hawkeye ("too limited"), Dr. Strange ("too similar to Doom"), Daredevil, Black Widow (both "not compelling fighters"), and Silver Surfer ("his playstyle flying with beams would be too broken"). Frankly, barring Surfer, all of these have aged poorly, and knowing that makes me thankful for 3 and Infinite.
4:58 This is how I discovered Marrow's existence. Heck, Wolverine & The X-Men introduced me to a *LOT* of other X-Men characters. Psylocke, Emma Frost, Spiral, Domino to name a few. Imagine my reaction seeing two of the girls I've listed and Marrow in MvC2. 13:48-13:53 Again, more comics I need to read and find. Marrow finds herself ugly, huh? That's not what her Uncanny X-Men look tells me. All I see is a gorgeous, ripped, red-headed tomboy with bone powers that could rival Kimimaro from Naruto.
It's crazy that Spyke's similarities to Marrow is apparently coincidental. He has a slightly inversed arc where he goes from mostly human to more monstrous looking, losing his hope in Morlock integration.
Always loved your thoughtful approach to the music sections and thorough analysis of the movesets, weaving them with the narrative character threads. Great to know you're also a fellow New Yorker too. Keep it up. You're doing fantastic work!
I'm dead ass serious when I say I've *never* seen Marrow's win pose. Nobody ever picks that character and nobody ever wins with that character. I'd actually been meaning for, like, 20 years to look stuff about Marrow. I knew she was an X-Men character, Spyke had a very similar power set, and that's it. Though, I find it hard to believe Spyke being so much like Marrow was pure coincidence. He even got permanent protruding bones, facial armor, and joining some mutants underground, though I can't remember if they were called Morlocks.
Marrow really needs to be brought back into the main fold. I think he’s stories involving her insecurities in regards to her appearance really speak levels. Not to mention the X-men really need more physical different looking mutants. Nightcrawler and Beast have always been the main ones.
Yeah, the characters that kinda lost the mutant power lottery have always been interesting to me; Maggot and Beak are another two I think really exemplify that.
The good thing about the Japanese devs is they seemed to pick characters that were just interesting to look at, and not what the fandom cared about. Omega Red, Shuma Gorath, Blackheart, etc, These are not big name villains, but they looked interesting and had diverse play styles.
She always stood out to me. Because of this game, she's one of the first comic characters i was introduced to period, but for some reason she's never been apart of the casual comic book culture osmosis ive experienced throughout my life outside of this game. Shame too, cause this design for her rules and she's got an interesting power. Very curious to learn more of her history here
Marrow has probably the most unique powers I've seen in a superhero comic. Gotta love the body horror. Too bad she's so underused that it wasn't until your video that I first seen her victory animation.
Could you do a video on Spiral next? I feel like she's similar to Marrow where MvC is the main thing people know her from, considering the most she had was one episode in the X-Men cartoon.
So Marrow... I honestly had no idea who she was before MVC2, and when even the LEGO games I played included some lesser-known characters like Stingray, Wonder Man or Cloud 9, that's kinda saying something about how obscure you are. (Heck, Wolverine and the X-Men is the only X-Men show I've watched and I didn't even notice she was one of the mutants from Xaivier's segments, I don't even think she was name dropped, granted that was a long @$$ time ago, so I probably forgot) And while I wouldn't be opposed to her coming back, I'm not entirely sure if I'd care too much, especially when there are a bunch of other obscure characters that could get the spotlight that still haven't in any of the MVC games. Maybe I'd be singing a different tune if I actually knew more about her or read stuff she was in though.
I love obscure oddball picks in this series, but Marrow's inclusion as one of the two new Marvel characters in MvC2 definitely feels strange, especially when you consider that both her and Cable are both X-Men and are in a roster that's already chock full of them.

Perhaps because Marvel was trying to push this edgy character on the public they convinced Capcom to include her? I don't know but that she's cool she is, that's some really badass superpowers
You know as common as comic books are in our daily life’s I for some reason never could get into Comic Books for some reason which is strange because I like Illustrations in comic books particularly from 30s and 40s but the storytelling in comic books I find strangely boring and formulaic which is crazy because superhero comics are meant to be complete opposite of boring. I guess this is the main reason why I find most superhero movies to be boring because they always follow the same predictable story beats and I find it a very artistic hollow experience. However with that said I still appreciate it when explain the history of the Marvel characters at the beginning of each episode and despite me not being a comic book fan I can’t deny that the Marvel characters are a blast to play as in the MVC games.
That's honestly pretty fair. The thing about superhero comics is that they're made in service of being perpetually relevant and evergreen, so a lot of the time that comes at the expense of any kind of concrete development or status quo changes, see Spider-Man for example. I love the medium because writers that work well within those constraints can put out fantastic stories, but it is what it is. Same thing kind of goes for superhero movies, too.
I was originally going to just do one video for both since WM is basically the same outside of a couple things, but I actually decided on doing separate videos instead, since it gives me more room to talk about War Machine specific stuff and makes the Iron Man video a little less stressful to put together since that video on it's own is probably going to be lengthy.
I think Chris Bachalo in particular has grown into a phenomenal artist. Big fan of his mid-late 2000s work in X books and his Dr. Strange stuff from a few years back.

I know of it, but hadn't actually gotten around to it! I should fix that
I forgot she existed! I think im gonna try her out with my team of jill and blackheart (yes im well awere how it is not optimal, thank you)
I wonder what happen if Marrow and Kimimaro have children?
I don't know if it's happened to anyone else, but when I play Arcade mode, Marrow's CPU acts more aggressively than other characters, even on low difficulties. This trait is shared by other female characters such as Sakura, Sonson, Tron Bonne and Jill.
@@MrPyro90s Yeah, some characters have more aggressive AI than others. Rogue's in particular likes to rush you down relentlessly.
@@TheSeventhForce Yes, that's why every time I have to fight against the characters I mentioned I get a little nervous and take a lot of damage, especially with Sakura, her Shouo'uken is very annoying and it seems to have priority.
I don't think I'll ever get used to PS3/360 version of MVC2 with the invisible wall due to screen ratio. They should have just ported the Dreamcast version.
i remember going to the comic book store with my dad and 2 other brothers and buying that XMEN GAMBIT ISSUE PENNED BY ZHE LEGEND JOE MADUREIRA, the cover pulled out and was holographic like the kid i almost beat up for a charizard for...i've saidtoo much
but can you find out why the capcomproducers and Marvel producers choose them? if i membeberries msrvel was adamant on bone and adamantuim wolverine, license deals and other reasons? can you find that out?
@@j.r.6627 There were a few Marvel characters they initially considered, but narrowed them down to Marrow and Cable because they had power sets that could make for easily understandable fighting game movements and didn't thematically overlap with anyone else on the roster; Cable in particular was also chosen with his Western popularity and time travel backstory in mind; they fought people would get a kick out of Cable and Cyclops being in the same game considering their history.

I see those transitions, had a little fun with after effects? Good one as always
The screen break reminds me of hol horse from heritage for the future, wouldnt be shocked if it was a small shout out
Transitions weren't done by me, they're thanks to RaitoADV. They're pretty fantastic though, yeah!
I knew i remembered were she was from! I first encountered her in..house of M
They took the character known for thinking she's ugly and had bengus make her look normal.
I think a 3D version of this character would be really cool, but I doubt she'll ever return
Perhaps because Marvel was trying to push this edgy character on the public they convinced Capcom to include her? I don't know but that she's cool she is, that's some really badass superpowers
Omg she’s the same won from evolution or some animated one where the robot is her friend or whatever right?
Wolverine and the X-Men, yep! She makes friends with that one Sentinel.
Marrow was always a weird inclusion to me, always came across to me as a kid as that weird bone chucking lady from the X-Men.
I like spike I want he in the comic
Sorry if unrelated, I have a question, how are you going to handle War Machine and Iron Man?
I was originally going to just do one video for both since WM is basically the same outside of a couple things, but I actually decided on doing separate videos instead, since it gives me more room to talk about War Machine specific stuff and makes the Iron Man video a little less stressful to put together since that video on it's own is probably going to be lengthy.
@, figures, Who do you plan on doing first?
War Machine, most likely.
Awesome, I prefer him anyway, tho Iron Man still awesome
Hope you'll have a good day
marrow is cool i think.
Late 90s X-men gets a bad rap. But I'd take Joe Mad, Kubert, Bachalo and Alan Davis art over 90% of modern Marvel any day.
I think Chris Bachalo in particular has grown into a phenomenal artist. Big fan of his mid-late 2000s work in X books and his Dr. Strange stuff from a few years back.
Will Have Cable In Your Channel?
