Great job reading this; starts getting upfield in a hurry but quickly recognizes what’s happening with the pulling guard coming across and then perfectly times up the outside fake and explodes back inside with the club move and blows this thing up in the backfield - you love the display of athleticism but also football instincts and awareness here. I don’t know if this has been kind of a steady progress thing that’s been happening throughout the season or if the coaches were just really emphasizing the run game to him this week but he was so much more aware and gap sound vs the run here than what I saw in games against Mizzou and Notre Dame. Other than the bad one late where he got a little overeager when he got eyes on the back and tried to beat the blocker inside and gave up edge, Scourton was really good against the run here. Watching those Mizzou and Notre Dame tapes I had serious concerns about him in the run game both in terms of being aware and seeing it on time but also in terms of overall interest level, as at times I got the feeling watching those games that he was almost playing with blinders on and had a single-minded notion that the job of an edge rusher is simply about the pursuit of the quarterback. It’s really good to see the improvement there.
